BBrown: Update With Bryan Mone

Submitted by Brandon Brown on

Yesterday someone asked whether or not Bryan Mone had sent in his early enrollment papers along with the other recruits planning to do so. I got in touch with Bryan himself and he told me that he did indeed send his papers in.

Earlier today someone told me on Twitter that it was being reported by his coach that the papers had not been sent in yet. I am going to dig a bit deeper to try and find out for sure but I'd like to believe that Bryan himself knows if his papers are completed or not.

Bryan did say that he is very excited to head to Ann Arbor, but also very nervous to leave his mother behind in Utah. Michigan is a long way from home for Bryan but he assured me that he is very happy with his commitment and Michigan and knows that it's what's best for him and his family.

He might the recruit I'm most excited about (or Peppers obviously). He seems like a really solid guy and is fairly under-the-radar even considering he's a top 100 type guy. I could easily see him being a captain one day

They'll probably rotate a lot of guys around in the spring to sort it all out. Who plays where will depend on how ready to play the young guys are (and if we sign guys like Malik McDowell or Deshawn Hand). If McDowell commits and can contribute, then I'd predict Wormley or Godin move to the 3-tech. I also think Henry and Hurst each play different DT spots, meaning if Hurst is looking more like a 3-tech, then they move Henry to the nose, and if Hurst can play nose, they keep Henry where he is. I could see it play out like: Wormley-Heitzman-McDowell Pipkins-Hurst-Mone Henry-Godin-Poggi Clark-MO-Taco-Marshall (and maybe Hand too holy smokes). We've got bodies, we just need to figure out where they all fit best. Luckily, a lot of those guys are pretty versatile.

taken care of at home before heading to Ann Arbor.  Having to take care of his brother like he does is a huge indicator of his stellar character.  Regardless of how he ends up doing on the football field, I'm proud as a Michigan graduate that we'll have someone like him on the team.

I came across a YouTube video of his Under Armour game jersey presentation, and he looks like a VERY quiet kid.... Also, absolutely massive...

2nd favorite recruit in the class!

I think its best to stay away from any sort of follow up story. The kid is going through a brutal decision-- give him space

Guys like him make me feel better about the DL future. He's going to be a good DT at Michigan. He already has good size and will have a head start on getting into the system.

I love Samoan football players.  They seem to have this super human size and strength.  We don't get many of them as they seem to stay on the west coast.  I know we have Houma at fullback.  I wish we could get more Pacific islanders.

their entire culture is predicated on being nice in everyday life but tough/crazy as heck in any and all competition. There is a difference between the two cultures but not much. They tend to be naturally athletic no matter the size due to practices, dances and stretches they start as infants lol. Kidding aside, before school from their first day they do those things. Over time it lends to flexibility, etc. Finally, both societies tend to have very high intelligence/test scores as in both cultures there is little done in school aside from learning unlike here. Also, very low cases of bullying as it's just not considered a thing to do by other kids. You show status on the field of whatever you compete in and it stays there. FYI, had a Samoan friend in school.

that Hiloti Ngata type player. We need a big man that doesn't just demand doubles but can penetrate to drop the run and get the QB uncomfortable. So much opens up when you have that kind of guy in the middle and, while still young, I thought Pipkins would be that this year. Yet, even against a spread team you can do so much more if putting one man on a guy like that equals doom, doubles allow him to still make plays but more importantly give one on one matches on just the front 4. This allows for blitzing being more effective as opposed to stonewalled or a bit late, etc. msu seems to just find them on the street/juco. Call it coaching/system, to be honest. Still, we need that kind of inside monster. Hopefully Mone can eventually be it, sooner than later as our LB speed isb largely negated when every DL can be singled and held at bay.

...in the OP (Brandon reporting that Mone says he has signed, while Mone's HS coach says he hasn't), in this morning's Recruiting Roundup on The Michigan Insider, Sam Webb stated that Mone has not sent in his early enrollment paperwork, but that it should be completed soon.

Are early enrollment papers binding?  It appears that if you enroll in January you do not sign a NLI, but I was not clear if someone could sign the early enrollment paperwork but still go somewhere else.

it would be surprising to me if he didn't have some second thoughts, if there really is a delay in getting his papers in. Given how unimpressive our DL has been this season, we need players like him, especially now that Pipkins is out.
