BBrown: Recruiting Dead Period

Submitted by Brandon Brown on

The recruiting dead period started Monday and runs through January 15. Dead periods, quiet periods, evaluation periods...it can get a bit confusing. Here is what the NCAA says about a dead period:

During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.

The dead period might be the most confusing of all, but here is what is allowed within the above rule:

  • Letters/emails
  • Calls (one/week from coach, unlimited from recruit)
  • Visits to a college (ie: bowl practices) but meeting with a coach is not allowed on or off campus

That being said, recruiting could be pretty eventless for a little while so I'm open for suggestions. If you have something you'd like me to tackle, let me know and I'll try to pump out some material as my Christmas break is just a day away.

can't reach out to recruits, but you still can.  Your ability to reach out to recruits can still make for viable content.

Logically - we tend to focus our recruiting efforts on the as yet uncommitted - maybe if you're looking for content, reviewing or providing updates on our commits would be good?  Interviews with current commits and providing positive vibes about the program from those who clearly want to be Blue?

This reminds me of a Friday Night Lights episode where Vince is on a visit to UT and the headcoach runs out and tells Vince's guide to pass along the message to Vince on how much they want him, while the whole time hs is staring right at him.

Perhaps a rundown of how you think the class finishes out and/or some discussion of the implications for next year's small class. This would also add to the ongoing and compelling (I kid) debate about 2 linemen, or three etc. etc.

Any thoughts on a pro OC or former pro OC who might be available?  We're doing fine with Mattison.  How about finding an OC of his caliber.  We'd be looking reeeeal good if we acquired such a coach.  Just sayin'.

any viable replacements for George Campbell, in the 2015 class. Who do you feel the coaches may look to at that position (of course I am sure they are still recruiting Campbell but we all know how these things normally end)...

Here are a few in-state guys (Sam Beal, Ray Buford, Joeveair Kennedy, Keshawn Gilmore), and a few out-of-state guys (Juwan Johnson, John Burt, Irvin Charles, Reggie Rogers, Jabari Greenwood, Aramis Alexander, Miles Boykin, Van Jefferson) who might be possibilities at wide receiver.

Adding to this, if you have some insight into the EE process and exactly how much interaction these student-athletes have with the coaches, weight staff, play book, etc. once they arrive on campus for that first semester? Does the university find them dorm rooms near the other athletes, or since they're coming in halfway through the school year, are they banished to Fletcher Hall (actually doesn't seem so bad.)

Those are a lot of very good questions and I'll do my best to uncover some of the answers. The problem is that there may be a lot of that stuff that the players honestly don't know yet. They might find a lot of it out once they are actually enrolled and on campus and by then, they aren't free to talk to anyone they want anymore.

Great insight though and I'll see what I can do!

Michigan's Under Armour All-Americans: Juwann Bushell-Beatty, Michael Ferns, Drake Harris, Bryan Mone, Jabrill Peppers, Wilton Speight and Jared Wangler

What will you tell Da’Shawn Hand to convince him that he’d be better off at Michigan than at Alabama?

What will you tell Leonard Fournette to convince him that he’d be better off at Michigan than anywhere else?

(For Bryan Mone)  Are you satisfied that good arrangements are being made for your brother’s care for after you leave Utah for Ann Arbor?

(For Drake Harris)  How’s the rehab from your hamstring injury progressing?

(For Jabrill Peppers)  Are you still being bothered by leg cramps?  If so, will you be running track during the winter or resting up for the spring season so that you can try to break the New Jersey 200M record in 2014?

(For Jabrill Peppers)  Will there be a Team 135 rap video produced during the down time before the All-American game?

(For Michael Ferns)  Will there be new Team 135 T-shirts made for the All-American game?

Will you be asking punter Gary Wunderlich, an Ole Miss commit, if he’s ever taken the test, and if so, what was his grade?

Not necessarily for next weeks content, but going forward.  I'd like to see some data on the effectiveness of our staff from a recruiting standpoint.  Recruiting sites sometimes list  name but I am nto sure how accurate that is.  When you talk to the kids who have offers, I would like to know who their primary recruiter is.  Then we can monitor who actually signs and see if there are any interesting trends.  I know sometimes that comes up when you are talking to recruits, but sometimes it doesn't.  I also recognize that many, many factors go into whether a recruit accepts an offer, and multiple staff members may have involvement with individual recruits, but it would be a data point I am interested in.
