BBrown: Recruiting Dead Period
The recruiting dead period started Monday and runs through January 15. Dead periods, quiet periods, evaluation periods...it can get a bit confusing. Here is what the NCAA says about a dead period:
During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.
The dead period might be the most confusing of all, but here is what is allowed within the above rule:
- Letters/emails
- Calls (one/week from coach, unlimited from recruit)
- Visits to a college (ie: bowl practices) but meeting with a coach is not allowed on or off campus
That being said, recruiting could be pretty eventless for a little while so I'm open for suggestions. If you have something you'd like me to tackle, let me know and I'll try to pump out some material as my Christmas break is just a day away.

I've heard this time is very alive for Tosh Lupoi.

Wow, I thought I followed recruiting pretty closely, but I had no idea there was a difference between dead periods and quiet periods. Thanks BB

I still don't really understand all of it. It's hard to keep up with too as it changes quite often. If I made any kind of mistake I'd like to know because this is something I'd like to have down.

Seriously, who are the d-bags negging our recruiting guru?
Appreciate all the updates Mr. Brown.

The negging on something as informative as this is quite confusing to me. I also appreciate the work BB does with regards to recruiting news.

can't reach out to recruits, but you still can. Your ability to reach out to recruits can still make for viable content.
Logically - we tend to focus our recruiting efforts on the as yet uncommitted - maybe if you're looking for content, reviewing or providing updates on our commits would be good? Interviews with current commits and providing positive vibes about the program from those who clearly want to be Blue?

This reminds me of a Friday Night Lights episode where Vince is on a visit to UT and the headcoach runs out and tells Vince's guide to pass along the message to Vince on how much they want him, while the whole time hs is staring right at him.

So does this mean we cant get any de-committs until January 16th?
Kidding.
Hopefully.

Perhaps a rundown of how you think the class finishes out and/or some discussion of the implications for next year's small class. This would also add to the ongoing and compelling (I kid) debate about 2 linemen, or three etc. etc.

So this means ND can still send 500 Christmas cards to each recruit EVERY day.

BK could mix it up a bit.

Any thoughts on a pro OC or former pro OC who might be available? We're doing fine with Mattison. How about finding an OC of his caliber. We'd be looking reeeeal good if we acquired such a coach. Just sayin'.

I mean you WERE poised to break 60 before that post!

I love that negs work again.

I debated whether or not to spend a point to neg this.
Negged.

That was a TERRIFIC investment - 1000% return so far...can you take a look at my portfolio some time?

I'm just doing my best to play nicer these days. and really not wanting to give up points to neg. So, I will prop up the dude who does the dirty work that I agree with. So it turned out okay for him too!

How about a 2014 recruiting board for defense?
December 19th, 2013 at 7:17 AM ^
any viable replacements for George Campbell, in the 2015 class. Who do you feel the coaches may look to at that position (of course I am sure they are still recruiting Campbell but we all know how these things normally end)...

Juwan Johnson is a name to watch in the future.

Here are a few in-state guys (Sam Beal, Ray Buford, Joeveair Kennedy, Keshawn Gilmore), and a few out-of-state guys (Juwan Johnson, John Burt, Irvin Charles, Reggie Rogers, Jabari Greenwood, Aramis Alexander, Miles Boykin, Van Jefferson) who might be possibilities at wide receiver.

Who knows, maybe Campbell just needs to sew some wild oats.

Me too.... Harris looks like a true elite RB, something that I haven't seen since Anthony Thomas. I hope Green becomes one.

Are the EE's allowed to show up to bowl practices/games? If so, are any planning to do so?

Those are a lot of very good questions and I'll do my best to uncover some of the answers. The problem is that there may be a lot of that stuff that the players honestly don't know yet. They might find a lot of it out once they are actually enrolled and on campus and by then, they aren't free to talk to anyone they want anymore.
Great insight though and I'll see what I can do!
December 19th, 2013 at 1:34 PM ^
If things are the same as when I was in school, the players who enroll early go to West Quad with the rest of the team (minus those who live off campus).

since it college-bound players they can't contact, are they still able to visit 2015 and later recruits?
December 19th, 2013 at 10:56 AM ^
But I'm not 100%. I was skimming through the NCAA website and I think the dead period is for any graduating year.
This attempts to clarify all of the rules. After reading through most of it it's still a bit murky.

Appreciate your work, man. Something about what went wrong with George Campbell and what it will take for UM to retain him would be cool.

I'd really like to see us come out of this dead period and land all of the 5 stars

Not necessarily for next weeks content, but going forward. I'd like to see some data on the effectiveness of our staff from a recruiting standpoint. Recruiting sites sometimes list name but I am nto sure how accurate that is. When you talk to the kids who have offers, I would like to know who their primary recruiter is. Then we can monitor who actually signs and see if there are any interesting trends. I know sometimes that comes up when you are talking to recruits, but sometimes it doesn't. I also recognize that many, many factors go into whether a recruit accepts an offer, and multiple staff members may have involvement with individual recruits, but it would be a data point I am interested in.
