Almost a year ago the Wolverine coaching staff decided to offer OL Garrett Thomas and for a while they were after him pretty hard. Without any type of negative reasoning the staff cooled on him a little bit over the course of the year but recently that has changed.
With the firing of Al Borges and the hiring of Doug Nussmeier, the Wolverine coaching staff obviously had to reevaluate some names on their recruiting board and Thomas seems to be a beneficiary of that. I talked briefly with Garrett last night about what Michigan has been up to with him.
Lately they started sending me a ton of hand-written letters and had been calling my coach a lot. I got Coach Funk's number and I talked with him for a while and he told me that they are still very interested in me. Coach Nussmeier remembered me from when he was at Alabama and he basically reaffirmed my offer and told me that I was one of their top priorities still and that they'd really like me to come up for a spring practice.
Thomas hails from Louisiana so making a trip up to Michigan isn't going to be easy but he says he's definitely interested.
I'm going to try and make it up there. I think I definitely will if they continue to show strong interest. I have a high interest in Michigan, but my recruitment is still very open to anyone.
Thomas expanded on his interest level in Michigan and the effect that Coach Nussmeier is having on him.
In order for Michigan to make it to the top of my list they would have to push really hard and show me that I'm their top priority. That's one of the main things I look for in a school and I think they are definitely capable of that. I really like Coach Funk and Coach Nussmeier a lot so it's possible.
Thomas has a lot of solid offers from all over the country, but he doesn't hold one from LSU or Alabama, the two main schools that dominate recruiting in his homestate. It sounds like Michigan could be in the mix for him, but I just find it hard to believe that if he's offered by either of those two schools, Michigan could out-battle them. If he does decide to visit this spring I'd like Michigan's chances a whole lot more.
0 - Passing interest or none
1 - Let's see if he visits before we talk
2 - Among large (8-15) group under consideration
3 - Contender in a top 3-7
4 - Tentative lead or solidly in a top 2-3
5 - Trending blue.
I think Garrett's interest might be higher than a level 1, but until he visits I just can't give him a score higher than that.
