Keep doing your thing, Brandon. It's much easier for haters to bitch about somebody else than to do something themselves.
this may be of some local interest
Keep doing your thing, Brandon. It's much easier for haters to bitch about somebody else than to do something themselves.
I don't know why people are downvoting this thread. Thank you Coach Brown for sharing.
Yes, it doesn't look good, but McDowell is a damn enigma. I'd rather have some clue that he's not coming to M rather than just flat out assuming he was only to face all of the disappointment.
If you're texting with someone and none of their replies are more than three letters, it's kind of a hint.
I don't know about that... I've been texting this cute girls I met at the bar from a few weeks ago consitently and she always gives me at least 3 characters, "No" or "IDK"... I'll keep tryin'
BBrown only sent 4 texts and Malik responded to the 1st. If he ignored the 1st, then presumably BBrown would not have sent another message.
I take this to mean no Malik for us. Hopefully, he goes way South then.
This. That's especially true with women. Basically translates to not interested or drop dead.
I would know, I get those responses automatically.
Sums up my dating life nicely
Agreed. After three straight one word (or acronyms that aren't somevariation of "lol") responses, I usually just toss my phone aside, shrug, and tell reassure myself that I tried.
But maybe that's why I'm not a journalist/reporter.
Thanks for the info. Always appreciate the updates. Also need to post the obligatory "He Gone".
This is cool.
I agreed with you before the edit.
I'm curious as to what you think EVERY update from a recruit is? Reporters contact them, ask them questions, and then post it to their respective sites.
This is just my opinion and I'm not trying to slam you because I appreciate your write ups. I think posting an actual text conversation when he is being short like that isn't going to do any good and to post verbatim what he said does seem kind of invasive. That's just my opinion, maybe I'm off base. I don't frequent a ton of recruiting sites but I've never seen an actual text conversation posted verbatim, at least not one short and not a full interview. Maybe I need to follow more recruiting. Not trying to pick a fight or be a jackass. Just my opinion. Appreciate your work, Brandon.
I can respect an actual thought and opinion. I see what you mean and while it's probably done this way a lot, it's not always announced as being verbatim or whatever. I guess my approach is that I don't try to twist words, inject emotion, omit negatives, or insert positives. I just shoot it straight.
Yeah, I agree. I sorta want to hear your impressions from your "conversations" rahter than quote him because I sorta feel like I'm reading a private conversation which feels a little weird.
On a side note I can't help but feel a little frustrated that the two big recruits (Hand & McDowell) in positions of need that we have been waiting on for quite some time, both of whom were thought to be UM leans, now seem like they are both lost. I'm not sure we can really be a good defense until we can get an elite pass rusher. I think Mone and Pipkins will be good in the middle in the future. I still have high hopes for Charlton. But, we still need some talent at SDE.
I think Taco is going to be really good and Mone is a real sleeper(I say that as he is a top 50-100ish kid that people often overlook as a great recruit committed.) McDowell would be a great pickup but not devastating, unless he goes to Sparty or osu. Don't want to lose him to a rival. I'm not reading too much into the brevity, the kid is tired of the process and has stated when he is going to announce his decision but is still probably being hounded night and day for comment. He's a close to the vest kid and with his decision coming at the All American game I don't see him giving any clues until then.
Edit: I thought he had stated he was going to announce at the AA game, guess not but yea I stand by my other thoughts. Kid just wants some space, he doesn't like clingy ness.
Brandon Brown is mgoblog's recruiting ninja and he will be leading recruiting coverage well into the future. There is no question about it. Bradon has done a great job rebuilding recruiting coverage and reshaping the culture to the level it was under recruiting ninjas TomVH and Aquaman. Anyone making efforts to stir up a recruiting coverage controversy at mgoblog is ill-informed and is likely promotiong a personal agenda that is not in the best interest of mgoblog.
Is recruiting coverage where we want it to be? No. Many don't remember that when Brian started mgoblog in 2004, his recruiting coverage kind of sucked. Brandon shoots straight from Jersey to the Aleutians, from Hudson Bay to the Bermuda Triangle. I know that Brandon Brown will finish his career at mgoblog as one of the most successful writers in mgoblog's storied history.
Keep it real homie and Go Blog!
Yeah, if I thought someone was going to be posting my text messages on a blog I would likely stop texting with them.
I guess my only question to Mr. Brown would be, are you sure he remembers who you are?
you're on thin ice now.
Before you interact with recruits and post conversations, think to yourself.....
Would TomVH do this?
From your postulation a few days ago that recruits not being receptive to your ovetures is a bad thing for Michigan... I'm guessing this is a very bad thing for Michigan?
Certainly doesn't bode well when you don't like your chances with your top two in-state players (one of whom is already committed to your biggest rival).
If he's not in blue, hope he goes south of the Mason-Dixon.
I guess upon further review it's not too bad.
Take out two QBs we're not really interested in and Bullough who we have no shot with with, that gives us Drake Harris, MoWays, and Marshall. 3/7 ain't too bad thoguh it always sucks losing blue-chippers to your rivals. It's not like Michigan is the most talent rich of states.
probably best to leave him alone. But it's not meaningful if there's no context - if he replies this way to all texts from recruiting analysts, it's not indicative of anything.
You are right in that maybe he's speaking with everyone this way, but there is context in comparing how he used to communicate with me to how he does now.
Hopefully this isn't how his conversations with the coaches go.
I like your posts and appreciate the insight j to recruiting that you provide.
That said, I think that there might be a flaw in your theory as to how a recruit's responsiveness to you indicates their ultimate decision. Is it possible that when you first contacted him, the recruiting thing was still new and exciting to him, so he was happy to communicate - hell, it would boost my ego to have had adults lapping up my every word when I was 16-18. Now, as his recruitment has gone one, the novelty has worn off and perhaps he is sick of answering questions from so many others in your position. Perhaps he even finds the constant attention from older "reporters" to be somewhat creepy. I don't say this is a remotely negative way, but it is possible.
This was my thought as well - that maybe he has grown wary of the whole recruiting process.
but few rules are absolute. McDowell is different from most recruits, at least in terms of how quiet he is about recruiting. May stand to reason he's different in other ways. Your rule may be valid, but probably at 80/20 rather than 100%
Who does Michigan have on tap if this goes The Way of Hand?
It seems that a number of recruits know of and/or read this blog.
I'd think that posting text conversations or talking about their habits and responsiveness might not be the best thing to do with regularity.
but it's not always rainbows and lollipops. News isn't always good in recruiting, that's just part of it. I'm not going to only post the good stuff and pretend the bad stuff doesn't happen. That being said, this isn't necessarily even a bad thing just what happened.
I'm not even speaking about the quality of the news, and it makes total sense for you to report both good things and bad things. However, that's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying, if recruits know the level of detail that you're willing to report on the blog, there's a chance they will be less likely to communicate with you - no matter what the news is.
I appreciate your hard work, and don't want you to think I'm being a prick. It just seems different from other people's methods of reporting.
The real question is, did (I) the reader, get any more value from seeing the exact conversation? And, could there be any harm in posting the conversation verbatim?
Personally, I get what you were trying to do by posting it for effect, but it didn't really add any value for me. If you just would have summarized it with an update. I know the title of your post obviously played into this, but I think a general update summarizing the convo would have worked better.
Secondly, I do feel BostonWolverine makes a good point. It does seem like it could lead to an erosion of trust if you post the exact conversation, which ironically could lead to shorter conversations in the future, which is of course what you're trying to avoid.
Thanks for the update though - seems as if he's trending away from Michigan but you just never know. We're really due for an Army All-American recruit to pick up an M hat.
I believe the poster was referring to the fact that he's that much more exposed to the public when you post the whole thing than he would be if you just gave a brief synopsis...EDIT: beaten to the puch.
This too would be part of my thoughts above. If a recruit feels like he is being over analyzed openly by his texts being posted on a blog I don't see them wanting to have more open conversations. If anything I think it could make Brandon's job more difficult. Just trying to help Brandon, not trying to being a dick.
It erodes trust if they know their responses are not just going to be analyzed and relayed, but exactly copied for public release. I don't see how they could want to open up much when they know speaking to a particular guy becomes more of a press release scenario.
I'm a whole lot less worried about a recruit reading BBrown's analysis of their interaction than I am a recruit reading the thousands of comments throwing our players, coaches, and administration under the bus, talking about pulling all support of the program, and the regular demands that we "fire e'rybody".
But that's just me, guy who thought we all learned something about public perception and showing a unified front of support for the program after the RR debacle..........
I agree on that too and trust me I've had some posts about it as well. I just want the best damn MGoBlog we can have.
The BEST MGoBlog we can have should be everyone's desire man!
Eh, fans will be fans. That's why we're all here. It's unrealistic to expect fans to point out the positives despite a result that is less than desired. People have to be who they are. Some are positive, some are pessimistic, some do research to analyze stuff, and some look to the future during times of our team's frustration. But, you can't expect someone to be someone they aren't.
I personally reserve the right to call for Borges head when I deem his coaching sucks, despite my complete lack of coaching knowledge. I won't disrespect players, but I will call it like I see it as a fan. We want to see our favorite team be successful because we all feel some slight piece of identity with the product we see on the field and when they are not successful we get frustrated and this is a forum to voice that frustration. That's all it is.
One thing I can say as a former college athlete, watching is much harder and more stressful than playing. As a fan all we do is watch and hope. As a player, if you've done your best, it's not that hard to brush off a loss and move on. It's much harder to do that as a fan. If any of our words actually has any real impact on a recruit that is at the very least weird. I know as an athlete no fans words that don't see inside the walls of day to day operations ever affected my actions.
and realizes that he comes across as kind of a dick.
M. McD to MSU
Shut your filthy whore mouth.
Ive feared this for awhile
I don't really blame him, if you were a recruit and you wanted to play on the best defense, where would you go?
Hopefully we will be right with th next year but we have a ways to go...
Narduzzi won't be there long but Mattison/Hoke will be.MsU will NEVER play for a national title, M will. It's a 5 year plan, and kids gotta realize 3 years in to this they will be here for 5 years in most cases.Think long term, but the majority(like people in general) usually don't.
I feel the same way unfortunately.
The minute I watched MSU hand us our as* with a dominating defense I began to wonder why he'd prefer UM over MSU.
Some kids actually want to go to College...
Because he is not playing for either team this year, and hopefully has the foresight to see how outstanding Michigan's defense will be in a year or two, and because Narduzzi will be a head coach somewhere else by then?
but your staements are just wishful thinking.
MSU has had a better defense for the past 5 years.
MSU has a ridiculously better defense this year.
MSU has proved it has better defensive coaches.
MSU has made no indication it will be without Narduzzi's services for the forseeable future.
MSU has shown no indication it won't be better for the next 5 years as well.
Unless a recruit grew up loving Michigan, or actually wants a higher quality education, I don't see why any defensive recruit (particularly in the midwest) wouldn't choose MSU over Michigan.
you have to look at this idiot everyday.
You're obviously a smelly pirate hooker.
Although I share your fears, it stings to not only realize I'm not the only one but also to read it in print.
HEY COACH B, your insight is very aprreciated by me and many people, especially those who understand the information. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.
doesn't negate the sentiment. I get it, you get a lot of flak, but you should just ignore them. They're people on the internet. Posting something like that is asking for a fight.
Maybe it was a trap to get me and likeminded people banned. But Brian said tread lightly so I will.
Brian can see for himself what he's paying to have posted. Whether it eventually ends up rating a call from the athletic department or not...
Yeah, I don't think the status quo can last much longer.
You and M-Wolverine sure are impressed with yourselves aren't you?
Trust me, you two are making this site as unreadable as all the other "trolls".
exist but I also think that posters have done a very terrible job of bringing up those criticisms in an appropriate manner. I think that if more people spoke with respect and decency, the criticisms would be perceived with more validity than they are now.
And note, I'm not saying that you are part of the group that does not have ability to show decency. I'm speaking more about the problem in general.
I have a bad feeling he is going to Ohio State.
you just get that sense. Or he is going to the SEC. . .
I mean, if Nick Saban can convince DaShawn Hand that Alabama has a better engineering program than Michigan, I'm sure Urban can convince McDowell that OSU has better defensive coaching than Michigan. Kids will believe anything these days.
I'm sorry, I hope this does not come off as smartass or ignorant, but the set up of your post just comes off as highly unprofessional.
I respect that you have a tough job, especially dealing with one of the largest and most passionate fan bases in all of sports. And we can become especially insensitive on the internet where we can hide under a certain layer of anonymity. That doesn't mean you should stoop to that level with passive agressive remarks.
In regards to recruiting, your track record does speak for itself. That being said, if I were in Malik's shoes, and I saw how you posted this conversation and how you interpreted it, I would not particularly feel like talking to you. It would not reflect on my feelings towards the school; but when making what will be one of the most important decisions of my life, speaking to someone who handles things in this manner would not be a priority for me.
All of the work you do around here is appreciated, and I hope that you can learn to ignore the ignorance you are faced with.
I debated on whether to include the last comment or not but the way I went about it before wasn't accepted by some for whatever reason so why not?
Either way I'm not going to stop doing what I'm supposed to. I just thought I'd try the 8 Mile approach. "I know everything he's about to say against me."
I do live in a trailer wit my mom.
Next time, BBrown posts just the general gist of the conversation and whiny MGoPopulace will be all "OMG WHY DON'T YOU POST THE ACTUAL TEXTS INSTEAD OF YOUR INTERPRETATION".
This was my thought exactly. The old addage of not being able to please everyone is obviously true in most arenas but it's glaring here sometimes. Just trying to share my information.
Dude, you're the best & most accurate recruiting guru on here. Keep it coming, both the good news & the bad news. You do a great job & you've got a great attitude.
I have never seen anyone ask that of Sam Webb, Tom VH, or Steve Lorenz.
Right, but I think recent events demonstrate that the MGoPopulace for whatever reason doesn't like BBrown. Whatever, I don't have a horse in the race, I don't really care, I just think it's funny.
A lot of people bitched about Ace, too, when he took over for Tom VH.
People REALLY liked Tom VH when he was here (for a damn good reason) and it is borderline impossible to follow up someone as widely revered as him.
Just a very vocal minority that feels the need to post EVERY thought that pops into their head. Do not confuse amount of points with amount of respect or quality of posts.
But it looks like it will shape up as a good year. As soon as Hoke can start winning more he will go back to having great recruiting classes.
Hoke and his coaches won't leave shortages in the team.
Can you advise of other recruits communications?
If everyone is getting the same responses it may provide more clarity. Keep doing yer best.
You would hope that such a pace could be kept up at the collegiate level (maybe not likely), but MaxPreps had some of his stats from his high school career (nothing for this year) and the 36 TFLs and 139 tackles in the last two seasons seem pretty good for a DE even if it is high school. Does anyone know what his defensive stats look like this year?
We goan die?
I see that Coach B has started an interesting debate.
If nothing else, I enjoyed the close-up view of what he does.
I think you should take this down. I didnt see in your conversation where you asked for his consent to publish it. It does not matter how long his responses were. This seems very unprofessional and disrespectful, and perhaps a violation of his rights.
However, this is never an issue as I always preface my inquiries with my position at MGoBlog and my purpose for asking them questions.
Thanks, this helps alleviate a little of my concern that is expressed below.
Ok, thanks for the info. I didnt see this in the text. But, perhaps he knows this from past conversations - which means you two have a professional ongoing relationship. But I am still concerned whether he knew the conversation woudl be published or not. If he had known, he might have wanted to comport himself better, such as giving more explanation or fuller answers. Anyway, if he has the expectation from past conversations that the conversation might be published, then its not a big deal.
And while I hate to be one to yell wolf when there is none, if a private text conversation is published publically, arent there some legal issues if there isn't an understanding it will be released?
This could be wildly off-base, but I wouldn't want Mgoblog to face any issues.
Thanks BBrown......don't worry once Brian brings back posbangs the smartasses will disappear into the internet.
It doesn't respect the guy's privacy and it doesn't provide any new information. We already knew McDowell had gone somewhat cold on Michigan.
The only thing this does is set Brandon up to be able to say "I told you so" when McDowell commits elsewhere.
[nevermind, concern addressed above]
I have to agree with the sentiments of others. It's pretty clear from the conversation that permission was not given from the student-athlete, so to post a transcript of your "conversation" with him is quite the invasion of privacy. His responses basically are screaming "leave me alone and quit texting me," especially after considering that he had been ignoring previous texts. If I were the student-athlete, advising the student-athlete or a coach/teacher of the student-athlete I would immediately tell him to never talk to you again and spread that advice to other student-athletes.
I know we're in the Twitter age and I'm a total proponent of texting/Twitter/etc. However, the level of unprofessionalism in this reporting is jarring.
Maybe some light can be shed on me, but not only is this concerning to me as an educator of high school student-athletes, it's concerning to me as a Michigan alumnus. I would suspect there's a very gray line this type of reporting flirts with in regards to boosters contacting recruits.
I always tell the recruits my position with MGoBlog and my reason for asking them questions. They know that I am reporting on their recruitment and that I am posting it to the site. I even send them the link once it's been posted. Posting our conversations (not sure why that needed quotation marks in your comment) whether it be a text or a phone call is what I always do and they are well aware of that. This really is a non-issue.
My $.02, meaning nothing personal about it: If you really think this was the right thing to do, maybe you shouldn't be texting recruits while representing MGoBlog, and by inference, the University and its fanbase.
Now, I'm a person who veers on the side of giving kids space in the recruiting process, so my views on how people like you should be contacting teenagers like Malik McDowell are a bit on the conservative side. But even at that, this just seems over the line.
posting an interview is one thing. Posting a texting "converstion" (in quotes because 1 word answers are usually not indicative of an actual conversation going on) in which it is clear the guy is just annoyed at this point, is quite another.
It really should be clarified ahead as an interview that will be published if the conversation will be relayed verbatim. Also, if you send him a link to this, how do you think reading this report/post reflects on Mgoblog and Michigan, tangentially, as an impression he would get?
you're going to send Malik the link to this post, where predictably everyone is pissed off at him for, as you put it, "the shortest text conversation ever"? That doesn't seem like a good idea for Michigan recruiting.
Hopefully, he's just sick of the process and attention and this isn't a reflection of his feelings about Michigan. All the signs seem to be pointing the wrong way recently though. Too bad considering some of his previous comments from not too long ago made him seem like a lock.
Maybe he enjoys a good old fashion phone call? Did you try writing him a letter? Singing telegram?
I don't think he goes Blue, but what do I know, I forgot my ATM pin today.
Malik actually responded back to me just now and said that he is in fact getting tired of the entire recruiting process. He said it's just constant from reporters and coaches both.
I then asked him if he'd like me to stop contacting him then and he said, "Nah man, your good." I hope you guys can rest easy now.
Thanks for the update!
Now here's an annoying but I think useful tidbit from a qualitative researcher - its ok to correct little mistakes that your subjects make in grammar (such as changing "your" to "your're"). Doing so does no violence to the statement, and only does right by your subject.
He should have responded back to Malik 'you're*'
He's going to Michigan!!!
Here is a friendly suggestion: posting the whole thing ran the risk of people perceiving McDowell as rude - which wasn't your intent, I realize. Just saying "I haven't heard much from him, and you guys know what I think when that happens" would have accomplished the same thing as posting the conversation but not opened McDowell up to criticism. I think you don't want to run the risk of ever making a guy look bad even when it's not your intent. People take thus stuff way too seriously - see all the negativity that went Hand's way after he committed. Better to open guys up to that as little as possible.
I think saying "I haven't heard much from him" gets the point across without setting up for the negative reaction and is likely the better way to go in the future.
I say this with no real feel for how to talk recruiting with other players (that's something I've been very clear that I haven't personally wanted to do as far as blogging), but I think the thing you have to weigh is what kind of light and what the reaction might be for both the recruit and yourself.
In this case, short answers, understand that people are going to try to interpret that and it's unlikely that they'll interpret it in a good way, so you're not giving a lot of upside for the recruit. Just as importantly for you, when he doesn't answer back and is giving short answers, posting the actual transcript gives you very little upside from a group of people that haven't done this sort of thing, so you're generally putting yourself in a negative light as well.
I'm not saying this to be mean, I just think that's something that needs to be a considered a bit more here, as with this conversation, there really is little room that people will lean towards the good side of things with the recruit or with you personally rather than to the negative side of things. And that's why I think the example that someone else posted is likely the better way to go for everyone involved.
If you're going to make this theory central to your analysis maybe you should lead with that question... just a constructive suggestion.
Cha ching!!!!! that mcdowell said that, may be quite revealing.
Keep doing what you are doing. Haters gonna hate. There will always be someone on this site that will critique an OP, that is just the nature of the site. Do what you believe is right and don't worry about others. Some people read things just looking for holes to poke. You can poke a hole in virtually anything posted on this site if you try hard enough. I have never in my life heard of a recruit saying..I didn't pick Michigan, because I didn't like the guys who covered recruiting on their behalf. Until such time as I do, I will not nitpick your posts.
Preemptive Strike: Someone will post a reply to my comment telling me that I am making dangerous assumptions and that even if no one has said they disimissed a school from their list because of the people who cover recruiting, doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
You need to remember that the many are interested in the mindset of our recruits. Unfortunately a few would rather nitpick you to death. I am sure Ace, Heiko and TomVH had growing pains when they started out. Keep your head high and keep up the good work.
By posting the exchange verbatim you are telling recruits there is absolutely no confidentiality in any communication. They will be (or should be) 100% cautious about anything they say or text to you. That is no way to build any kind of rapport with a recruit. Next thing you know, you're going to be reporting on the recruits tone of voice when you talked to them. You should at least get explicit permission to post a verbatim conversation with them before posting.
I know we all beg and plead for information on here, but no report might be your best move sometimes. Both for your career and for MGoBlog.
This is something that I don't expect you guys to know but I talk with these recruits about all of this stuff. We communicate "off the record" sometimes. Sometimes they tell me not to post something just yet or at all. Sometimes I ask them if I should post something or not. Sometimes I let them know, "Be careful how you answer this, but a lot of people are curious, blah blah blah." This is something I've had a lot of success with. Recruits talk to me and trust me with a lot of information. Do you really think that would be happening if I was unprofessional, untrustworthy, or dishonest?
Like I've said a lot of times before, Brian hired me for a reason after meeting me in person and getting to know me a little bit. I'm not a bad dude. I love football and recruiting and I have a passion for working with kids which is why I'm a teacher and a coach. I'm just trying to relay the facts and as much information as I can find for a fanbase that wants information all of the time.
I, for one, am not worried that you are a bad dude. But I do worry about what a bad dude might be prompted to do with information from a recruit.
It's good to know you've communicated all this to them and they can know what to expect will be said. Thanks man!
I think my main critique, and this is from seeing BBrown's other posts over the past few months, is that the paid/official staff on MGoBlog do a really good job of trying to be professional about balancing the tone of a fan post as opposed to an official capacity news-oriented post. There's a certain professionalism that came with TomVH's approach, as well as how Ace, Seth, and Brian handle their work for the blog, that BBrown's posts simply don't have. Just look through this thread.
If you're going to be the recruiting point man, texting recruits and trying to get inside information for the highest profile Michigan blog, you can't write your posts the way BBrown does. He's writing like a fan who has sanction to do what he does from someone higher up, instead of a professional on the same level as Brian and company, who puts his fan enthusiasm aside to do a professional job, presented in a way that comes off as articulate and credible.
I just think back to the kind of presentation TomVH had, and I just don't see it here. Just a bit of constructive criticism for BBrown. This is how you learn, and all the main guys around here went through the same thing now and then.
I agree with a lot of what you said. If I had that that exchange with a recruit, I'd write something like this....
I exchanged some texts with Malik tonight. As you know, he released a top 7 recently and there's no order to it. This interesting because [insert some insight to previous recruiting info]. Originally, he was going to make his decision during the AA game, but he's not so sure now. Malik has always been one of the tougher recruits to read. He, his parents, and coaches have done a great job of keeping things close to the vest which is their right. He seems like a high character kid, whichever school he ends up at will end up with a great student athlete.
Don't forget, sometimes perception = reality. There are a lot of people on this board giving you their perception of the situation. Are we really that far off from what some recruits might think?
Jesus Bando, you forgot the constructive part of your constructive criticism. Brown takes criticism well, seems to have a good attiude, but could definitely step up his professionalism. He has promise, but there are things he nees to work on - such as the things you capture above.
I will respond for BBrown.
I appreciate the advice. Some of it will be considered and some won't. I wasn't being dismissive, I just said thanks. Yes, the recruit read the original article because he asked me to send him the link, which I honestly wish I wouldn't have done after how all of it went and how people posted off-putting comments about him for no reason.
And what?!?! There's not much you can do for me? No offense, but what makes you think any of the staff need or want your help or anyone elses for that matter? I'm really not trying to be a jerk, but seriously, we can't possibly please everyone or take every bit of advice that people feel the need to offer up.
And lastly, I'm not sure how you think it works for me, but I don't have a quota. I don't care how many "clicks" I get. That's not what it's about at all. I started The M Block almost 2 years ago and never earned a cent. I don't care about clicks, I enjoy doing this, or at least I used to.
This sounds like something I would say.
Who posted off-putting comments about him, random new poster at a curious time?
For some reason I laughed really hard at this mental image. Fwiw.
Maybe he is short with you because you post your private conversations with him on the internet. He said more than I would have.
I'm not judging. I get it. Some people hold their cards close to the vest.
but it just feels like he's going somewhere else. I hope I'm wrong, because the D-line could really use his help.
I think it's funny that he posted this on his twitter just recently. He seems like he's leaning more towards State (why else would you associate yourself with WIlliam Gholston), but from all accounts, he also seems like a kid who hates the additional attention from the media that comes with being a big time recruit.
— Mr. Ranger LEEK (@D1_LEEK) December 4, 2013
Perhaps someone can do a poll, but I think its safe to assume that there's not enough demand for verbatim conversations to go to the trouble of publishing them.
Just seems weird... off somehow.
If I were asked if there is an order to my Top 7 and my response was "No" I might be upset if it is followed up with being asked what I thought about having one place as my favorite.
I could think the questioner is not listening, or worse, didn't like my answer and is kind of accusing me of not being honest.
Take him for his word.
If it's so weird, why did you click on a post that is about having a conversation with a recruit? Get over yourself.
A short search should prove that I have been at the very least as critical of B. Brown before he began working for MGoBlog as anyone. I stand behind everything I said, but the past seems to truly be the past, and I feel we are better off with B. Brown than without.
I would be delirious with joy to see a Recruting Analyst who does his or her own work put it out there and defend it. If it proves to be wrong, say so and move on. If you are happy with your theory, it is as good or better than what anyone else has brought to the table.
Anything beyond being the fastest retweeter in the west is refreshing.
I wish you jackasses would just read the post and move on instead of nitpicking the fuck out of it and having that typical holier than thou mentality. Why do you care about whether BB got MM's permission before posting this? It's none of your business, and the kids know who BB is, what his job is, who he writes for and as he said, he prefaces conversations by reminding them of such. Just appreciate what BB does and brings to the blog.
Cripes on Christmas this place is going to hell in a handbasket.
Let's see how long it takes for someone to make a smartass, ignorant comment about me. (I didn't want this last comment to come off as combative, but maybe this will keep those types of commenters away.)
Or maybe it should have been easy for you to predict that it would have the exact opposite effect.
Turns out it doesn't matter. Now I know.
The fact that you keep reinforcing people's negative impressions of your reporting should probably matter to you, and are you honestly saying that you didn't know until now that posting "come at me bro" wouldn't end well?
Really tho, I would very much enjoy it BB's signature was indeed "come at me, bro!"
Or ShookThemHatersOff.mp3 autoplay. I appreciate all the hard work, just a suggestion.
I see we've now transformed this board into a Michigan Recruiting Xanga.
Please, for the love of god, stop trying to justify this inane post and just take it down.
When posting something can do more harm than good for the program, why even bother?
How is this doing any harm to Michigan? BB and this blog aren't affiliated in any way with Michigan other than rooting interest so how is Michigan worse off with this post than without? The numpties that harrassed a kid BB profiled by making fun of an old picture of his made the brand, the program and this blog look bad. This strikes me as harmless. If McD has a problem with this being posted, he can contact any one of the mods and have them take it down.
Oh man I loved my Xanga. Thanks for bringing that back to memory.
Don't read into it.
That way lies madness.
For all we know, he has gotten so sick of responding, that he just handed his best friend the keyboard and told him to just respond on his behalf with "No" to everything.
The worst that can happen really isn't that bad, so why sweat it?
At least he responded. He's probably considering all his other options but hasn't decided. I say that because that's exactly what he has said he's doing.
He's a high school kid. When have they EVER been easy reads?
In conclusion, butt
Does great work! Usually spot on with these things. I've never had a good feel for Malik anyway so it is what it is! Mone is the man though!
All the BB threads devolve into 100+ post flamebait havens. I can see why Brian is tired of the board. People just pissing on and on about crap for the sake of pissing.
Absolutely fucking this.
To be fair, he has exams coming up. I am sure it's something as simple as that. Everything will turn out okay tomorrow
He doesn't have exams for a while yet. My college exams are next week, but I know my high school didn't have semester exams until late January.
It's just a Q&A.
No love for satire... sad day, mgoblog. sad day.
I wonder who deleted it.
The board has been lacking ballsy posts these days. It used to be bolder without being troll-full.
Things were fun! I miss the WLA guys.
1. Shoot it straight (into foot).
2. moderatin surrs bidnits.
It's not BBrown's fault he followed an mgoblog recruiting legend. Thanks Coach Brown for all the hard work.
Lulz at all the people trying to tell BB how to do his work. This is hilarous, so many recruiting experts in this thread! Wow, what a gong show this thread is...
Whenever somebody is a "lock" but they don't actually committ for months after their other "lock" peers do . . . well they probably ain't coming.
Can't imagine the kid would be thrilled to see this on here. It looks like he was annoyed by the texts and would probably be more annoyed that the entire conversation is on here.
However, I think you should have sent an additional "?" after the last text when he didn't respond.
Which group is McDowell in today? Hand or Harris?
more bitching on this site than an old ladies' sewing circle
It's not posters. It's ad revenue that keeps them employed. People will always come here even if they don't post.
, particularly where one participant is (1) a kid and (2) that kid isbeing courteous but clearly does not want to talk is abit shocking to me.
Brian, are you okay with this?!? Seems inconsistent with what this blog puts out there and what the Michigan community reps, no?
Based on the limited interaction from MM fitting the pattern of recruits choosing other schools, do you think UM has a better chance of finishing second or third among the seven finalists?
I appreciate you posting the conversation. It seems like your job would be frustrating much of the time.
This is not good reporting. BB, definitely dig your impressions and some of your insights, your passion can't be questioned...but this needs to be deleted.
Embarrassing to the entire Michigan brand, but you are Brian's boy so carry on.
Do you find it comfortable? Seems pretty constraining to me.
Everybody gets so bent out of shape about this stuff. Don't like it? Don't read it. State why and move on. Don't make the same statement 500 times. Whether you agree with posting the convo or not he did not use it in a "creepy" way. Why do so many of you get obsessed with calling him a creep? He used MM's reactions to paint a picture to the readers how the recruitment is looking. Then using past experiences and their outcomes BB came to a conclusion relating news to us on MM's recruitment. That is news that's how it's done. Obviously Brian thinks BB does just fine so all your complaining is for naught. Let it go and let BB report his findings to people that don't take it in a "creepy" way in the first place.
Than you BB
Agreed. Some people are just whiners. Always crying about something. I look forward to BB's recruiting tidbits. Keep up the good work BB!
As for MM, he isn't on board. Goodbye. Good luck. Moving on. NEXT!!
We are Michigan fans and should demand a higher level of behavior than an SEC site. Heck, I don't think an SEC site would publich a transcript of a text conversation with a kid without permission. This has nothing to do with whining, I reserve that for our offense against Akron and Connecticut.
If I may, I feel obliged to point out that some of the criticism here is very valid. I think we can all accept that recruiting is important to a college blog. And that means a blog needs to have a dedicated recruiting specialist. And that means that person is going to have to stalk high school kids. And that means we're going to get info from Twitter (it appears to be an approved form of communication with many recruits).
The real problem here is the content of the post itself and Malik's responses. We learned absolutely nothing new from Malik other than he might be annoyed with people generally or, worse, with Brandon in particular. It makes sense to touch base with the kids from time to time but these kinds if separate Board posts are probably not necessary.
Friendly advice: If I were Brandon, going forward I would leave Malik alone generally except to maybe send notes of congratulations for successes or condolences for failures. THAT is how to differentiate this site from all the other recruiting "experts" out there. Be a champion/fan of those considering Michigan instead of just another annoyance to the kids going through the process.
I didn't even want to comment here, since the sherriff seems to have a new zest for bannin. You hit all the notes that I've been humming to myself over here. Something just doesn't "feel" right about the way BB is handling himself, and by extension handling this site's reputation. It's nothing personal, but when so many people seem to be thinking the same thing... what if a recruit feels the same?
I just don't know...
I rarely post on this site, though I've been reading for several years. I'm now posting to say this: leave the kid alone. This is badgering, not reporting.
Have you ever watched a Brady Hoke press conference? If you aren't badgering, you probably aren't reporting.
And Brandon doesn't "Badger" he "Wolverines".
Brady is a grown ass man.
This kid is 17 years old.
Agreed. The ethical hazards of reporting on the college choices of 14-18 yo kids have made for a lot of discussion on here.
Just saying that reporting often entails asking questions that the subject doesn't want to, or is really sick of answering.
I think, in this case, Brandon just showed us a picture of the pink sludge that goes into our Big Macs.
To me an ethical blogger/journalist (of which I know several) would not under any circumstance repost a transcript of a conversation with a minor. He would just say, " spoke to Malik today and got three one word responses" no? Seems like a breach of trust even if Malik were an adult. The fact he is a kid makes it worse. The additional fact that there is admittedly no permission here and that it was done to demonstrate the blogger's wrong-footed "contact" theory is pretty unbelievable.
This is not a hard to fix or grasp, but judgment is and the preemptive defensiveness and failure to grasp the concept on this board is alarming. Not sure we are seeing the serious problem here.
As someone who gets interviewed once in awhile by bloggers and journos alike, I would destroy anyone who did this to me.
I love the recruiting info and hope it keeps coming, but I don't want it via this pretty appalling practice. IMO, the trust of these kids should not be breached and our collective image should not be tarnished in any circumstances...and even this little ol Michigan related blog should embrace that or fear backlash and publich embarrasment.
Throwing my take on this on the pile:
1) Malik knows the purpose of the conversation and knows who Brandon is. I think this sort of reporting may be a bit unprofessional generally, but I don't see anything unethical.
2) In this particular situation, the post comes in the context of a greater point about what causes Brandon to infer what he does about a recruit's mindset. In that sense, the details of the way the conversation played out has value above and beyond the what was conveyed. So I wouldn't even say this is particularly unprofessional.
3) That said, I think if I were Malik, I would find this annoying, and Brandon would probably go from one word answers to no word answers. For the sake of good relationships and securing future info, I would be overly cautious about letting recruits know about what you plan to do with their statements. On this one, don't think Brandon was.
Well, our record and football this year had me pretty disinterested starting with the Nebraska loss. If that can do that to someone who went to Michigan and generally bleeds blue, I can't imagine it bodes well with recruits.
BBrown, I have a couple of journo friends, and they have a knack for enticing people to talk to them without seeming creepy or aggressive. You don't have that. Your work is bizarre. I think you seem like a decent guy, but maybe you should go to journalism school before coming back to launch a career as a recruiting reporter. Alternatively, maybe find another field? Lots of us have passion for college football, but most of us aren't suited to be recruiting reporter, which is a field that requires a delicate touch to avoid exploiting the kids.
But you just flat out don't know what you are talking about man, point blank. You have no idea if I have that ability or not. The fact is I do have a knack for getting people to talk to me. That's the reason Brian hired me to do this. Hundreds of recruits answer every single question that I have. Not one recruit has EVER said, "Please don't contact me anymore." And sometimes I actually ask them if they'd like to be left alone because I don't want to be a pest and I know that they are hounded by reporters and coaches constantly.
As I have said several times now, Malik knows exactly who I am. We have talked on many occasions. He knows I am the recruiting person here and why I am asking him these questions. We continued to talk after this original post was posted, it just took him a little while to repond back again. He is growing tired of the entire process from reporters and coaches. He also said that I don't bother him at all because I rarely even try to get in touch with him. I asked him if he'd like me to stop contacting him and he said no, he said I wasn't one of the issues. It's kind of annoying that I have to defend myself with stuff like that instead of just doing my job and reporting my findings.
Please don't act like you know what's best for me or this site because you just don't. I'm not trying to be a dick about it but you are only taking one snapshot of the much bigger picture on how all of this works.
blustering by some on this site is getting tiresome. It's like these windbags don't even read your replies. You've stated dozens of times how you go through the process of contacting these kids. I don't envy you a bit in dealing with these morans.
Much has been made about the quality of posting on the board of late. The hilarious (or sad) part is that for most of us it's these self proclaimed ambassadors for the program that are making this place unreadable. There are different types of trolls. Pretentious windbags fall squarely in one of those types.
The biggest douche in the uuuuuuuniverse. In all the gaaaaalaxy, there's no bigger douche than heeeeee.
... there is really much to take away from this other than the dude is probably getting sick of what has to be a ridiculous amount of text messages. This isn't a indictment to Coach Brown. He's just playing the system and the system isn't going to change.... but I can't take anything from this other than I'm sure a lot of people representing a lot of different programs are contacting him and his probably only giving those that are actually on the pay roll of the respective school the time of day... and maybe not even the.
I'm operating under the assumption I am a recruit and I read this post and all the comments. Many of the negative, condescending, ass-hole'ish comments toward Brandon from Michigan fans paint a far uglier picture of our fan base than his actual post. So to all of you who have a hard on for being a complete ass to our own recruiting reporter, I'd take a step back and consider whether your own behavior reflects more poorly on the University than Brandon's post. Which, by the way, appears to be his way of providing an example for a hypothesis that he set forth weeks or months ago. I think even Brandon would agree that this post wasn't really newsworthy, but it was a great example of what he's previously described. And to assume that someone would be offended by having a couple of "No's" posted, is a stretch.
I agree with every single thing you said. It's a forum post, not meant to be Earth-shattering. Just a simple update that Malik actually resonded to me even though his answers were short. In recent months he hadn't been responding to me at all so take that for what it's worth. He's not offended, I don't know how else I can explain that. He knows what I do. Nothing more need be said.
Do people bitch about how Rivals, Scout, 24/7, ESPN recruitniks get their info? I doubt they sit back and let the recruits call them. What's different with BB doing it? Is it because he's not paid by an "established" recruiting site? Everyone says this is one of the best college sites on the web. Why can't that qualify BB to ask these kids questions? Hell, he's a middle school teacher for crissakes. I highly doubt he's got a rusty van with "Free candy" spray painted on the side.
People would bitch on those channels if the info was published like this...fact is, its not because its unethical and inappropriate to post a transcript of text message conversation with a minor.
This is not a read and move on moment...this is a take down the friggin conversation moment before it gets worse and simply summarize it. Not hard
this doesn't look good.
Plain and simple. When he said IDK, you should have just said good luck in the future Malik, you're a hell of a player.
