With spring football all but wrapped up the coaches now turn their attention entirely to player evaluations and recruiting. Even though there isn't a ton of actual football stuff going on, visitors will still visit campus to check out the Ann Arbor lifestyle and the academic side of things. 2016 QB Mikale Washington will do just that today as he visits campus for the second time in about a week as he was just in Ann Arbor last weekend for the spring game.

Washington told me that he feels like Michigan is genuinely interested since they reached out to his uncle and asked him to come back after the spring game. That has left a solid impresion on the young quarterback.

So far from what I've seen Michigan has a really nice program. The team is great and overall it just seems like a really nice environment. I didn't really grow up liking them but now that I'm getting older I'm starting to get more and more familiar with them. My favorite team growing up was probably USC and then I started liking Oregon too.

Washington will be in Ann Arbor for the day and has a pretty good idea of what he'll be doing.

I'll be with the offensive coordinator and with some of the players as well. I plan on doing a little bit of chalk-talk with the other coaches too.

Michigan is obviously showing some early interest, but the process is young for Washington and ironically the University of Washington is showing him the most attention at this time.

------------------------------

Michigan has yet to nail down a favorite quarterback target in the 2015 class so focusing on the position in 2016 isn't a priority at this time. That being said Washington has grabbed the attention of the staff and is certainly a name to watch moving forward.

THE OFFER VIBE

0 - Not going to happen
1 - Doesn't look good right now, but we'll see
2 - 50/50, yes or no, wouldn't be surprised
3 - It looks like an offer could come in the future
4 - I fully expect an offer to come
5 - Guarantee this kid is offered

It is really early right now but Washington has been identified as a target and he's local. Even if he does become a highly coveted target for the coaching staff, an offer wouldn't come for quite some time based on how the coaches generally offer QB's.

EDIT: I think this has been established by now, but Washington was visiting Michigan State, not Michigan. This was just a misunderstanding. The visit got set up through Mikale's uncle and even Mikale thought he was visiting Michigan until they set out toward East Lansing, at which time he texted me and apologized for giving me incorrect information. Washington just recently moved to Detroit from San Diego and is still quite unfamiliar with certain things.

Hey, real football news!  Woohoo!  So where did this fandom of USC and Oregon come from?  Them, you know, winning probably.  Is he receiving interest from other programs at the moment?  What type of QB is he; strictly pocket passer, dual-threat, or somewhere in between (Morris-y or Russel Wilson-y)?

Brandon, it seems like a lot of guys are transferring to Detroit King. Any idea what the reason is? In the Detroit area, you never know who's going to be playing where from year to year... Guys transferring from Robichaud to King, U of D Jesuit to Cass Tech, Loyola to Southfield, South Lake to King, etc.

Mikale is from SanDiego, CA. he just recenly moved to the Detroit area. That explains his affinity to the west coast schools. Smart kid with huge arm. In regards to kids wanting to go to King or Cass its 2 things. Midtown is booming right now as far as people moving into the city. Secondly I think the style of play at both schools allows for a better evaluation of prospects from college coaches. Man coverage, blitzing, playing in space as opposed to the 2TE Fullhouse, soft zone styles that are more prevalent in the suburbs. Not to say that one style is better than another. Just my opinion. Not to mention that suburban schools have been winning with city kids for years. Its been proven that both programs are more than capable of winning championships and sending multiple kids to college.

Thursday morning pointless trivia:

If Mikale Washington ever starts a regular season game as QB of the Michigan Wolverines, he will be the second ever starting QB to share a surname with a former president of the U.S.

Who is currently the only player to have that distinction?

lists UM QBs with Presidential surnames:

Adams (2)
Bush
Johnson
Kennedy
McKinley
Taylor
Wilson (2)

It's odd that In spite of how common the last name of Smith is, we've never had either a President or Vice-President by that name.

When you guys make your predictions of who will go where etc., is part of the equation based upon how much scratch is available to be paid to the players?

Given the Bag Man article, it's a serious question and if you have details I'm sure you won't provide them, but a definite maybe or probably not might convey a message.

In the back of my mind, that's a consideration sometimes. When certain schools come into play for kids from outside their geographical area, I have questions. You can't really argue with kids from across the nation wanting to go places like Alabama and Florida because of their tradition and recent (or semi-recent, in Florida's case) success. But there are some other programs that make you scratch your head...

I mean, let's be honest: there's no above-board reason that LaQuon Treadwell should be attending Ole Miss right now. The kid had offers from all over, and Hugh Frieze had had very minimal success at that point. Oklahoma State isn't the cleanest program out there, if you believe reports, but at least they've had success throwing the ball. I really thought Treadwell would be served best by going to Oklahoma State, where he would catch 100 balls, win the Biletnikoff, and be a first round pick. Other than producing Eli Manning, Ole Miss hasn't done anything interesting on the football field in at least a generation.

I won't say that it's a thought that crosses my mind initially when kids are picking up offers, but when it's getting near to National Signing Day, official visits, etc., I certainly think that comes into play.

I have limited contact with recruits themselves, and I try to keep it that way. I think it prevents a conflict of interest for several reasons. But I do hear quite often from coaches and parents of recruits, and it's definitely an issue that a lot of top-level recruits come across. Even some mid-level recruits run into these things.

Depending on the school, the kid, the situation...it ends up being the only thing that matters. I've learned about stuff that goes on that honestly I wish I hadn't. It taints what the whole process is all about. The Bag Man article hits the nail on the head. It happens EVERYWHERE. If a fan thinks their school of choice is above it, they are just naive and wrong.

Kinda blows.
