Bball Recruiting - New 19 Target/EM 4* Guard Chandler Turner

Submitted by Matt EM on

Michigan with a new 2019 target in Detroit Renaissance guard Chandler Turner. I'm a huge fan of Turner's game, and think he's probably the most undervalued prospect in the Midwest. He was hurt for most of the Summer, so didn't get a chance to play AAU much this year.

He's a jumbo guard at 6'6 with tremendous skill........can create his own shot off the bounce and finish at the rim or knock down shots as an off ball wing from distance. Not very athletic, but man can this kid score.

I've watched him several times, and most of his production is transition based...........and that is simply something Michigan doesn't do a lot of under Coach Beilein. While Beverly is a great athlete in space, he doesn't produce very much in the half court and his shot is very suspect in terms of mechanics.

At 6'2 his passing/playmaking ability needs a lot of work, as he's very prone to turnovers with laxed, one hand passes. I absolutely love his potential/upside, but I just don't know if he's a very good fit for what Michigan does. Baylor is probably the school that is in the best position for him right now.

To answer your question specifically, asst. Coach Yaklich was at Cass Tech Saturday taking in the Horatio Williams Tipoff Classic, of which Beverly and Southfield Christian took part in............and notably Turner also took part in. I'm assuming Yaklich viewed the same thing I did.........Chandler is more skilled and a better fit in Michigan's offense despite Beverly being a better athlete.

doesn't play for shoe sponsored AAU club, and so he lacks exposure. Also, his AAU club isn't very big, so he plays the 3/4 spot which isn't the best thing in the world for his development.

Long story short, he has high-major level athleticism already, but needs skill development. This year will be big for him in terms of his future.

but it's all about prioritizing and maintaining contact with prospects. The good thing about this is that Michigan is also in on Turner's AAU and High School teammate Carrington McCaskill.........an absolute freak athlete at 6'7 that can stretch the floor with his jumper and has an evolving faceup game in the post. I talk with Carrington and Chandler quite frequently and they are certainly intrigued by Michigan.

Highlights of Carrington from this Saturday that I put together............for those that crave athleticism, this is your guy. His explosion and length are off the charts.

Guys with a knack to score usually do well for JB. I personally would love an athletic springy Big man even if he can’t shoot. We always go after bigs who we think can or will be able to stretch the floor which is great, but I would love a second stringer who is tough defense minded and athletic. Hate to see when small schools have springy bigs who can put athlete us.

While not springy types, they were recruited primarily for their defense, not to stretch the floor. I agree with the idea of having at least one big that's a tough defender. Maybe Beilein does too. I do think he has an easier time recruiting players like Castleton just based on how he's been using our bigs.

of that bunch, while also being the most potent offensively. I'm VERY high on Colin............not saying he'll end up at that level, because, well, he wont, but Castleton has some similarities to Pau Gasol. A legit 7 footer that can put the ball on the floor, shoot from midrange, pass and has a back to the basket game.

Defensively, Colin is the best shotblocker of that group by far, at the HS level anyway. Davis is in no way a rim protector, and was brought here to rebound and score in the paint with his back to the basket............whether he's able to do that remains to be seen.
