Baxter Recommits to USC?

Submitted by mrider on
That's the rumor going around at scout, don't know whether it's true or not.

I don't think this is accurate. The cover of michigan.scout.com says "Baxter is doing his due diligence." Both the Florida Scout board and the USC Scout board think he is still planning to visit Florida this coming weekend. I'm not suggesting that Michigan will get him, but I don't believe his recruitment is over.

expects him to stay out west as of recruiting roundup Jan 19. Says Kiffin is similar enough to Carroll that the feel of the program will not change. "Not dead but on life support" But an in home visit from RR could change that...If that happens. We'll see.

If it's true I'm obviously disappointed, but I'm not going to wish him ill. I hope he is a productive back for ::shudder:: Kiffin. The sanctions aren't about him and hopefully they don't screw him over.

Last I heard, RR was planning on hitting up Baxter and Parker on the west coast with in-homes sometime in the next week. As long as he makes the visit, I'd say we've got a chance. Obviously Parker is a much more likely commit at this point anyways.

RR and signing day always a good combination. Like to sign Black and Parker if possible. Black is going to be hard though. Baxter is a tough pull, but something says RR will make a nice run at that kid...if he is willing to listen.

Serious question - Why would anyone commit to a program that may be on probation 5+years? I've been hearing no TV, bowl games, and reduced scholarships. Can't figure it out....

This is a totally different situation than that of Levell Blanchard. At UM, the coach who actually committed the violations wasn't there. As another poster here previously pointed out, this would be like UM hiring Perry Watson as head coach after Fisher was fired. I have to wonder what Kiffin is offering these kids to keep them. He has already demonstrated that he has about as much respect for the NCAA rulebook as Charlie Weis does for Jenny Craig. Kiffin could be really funny, because even if USC gets off easy this time, he will be committing violations while on probation. That is what got SMU the "death penalty." The NCAA would never give USC the "death penalty," but they might punish them severely if Kiffin continues to commit violations after getting off with a "slap on the hands." I really don't understand how recruits can't see what is happening, but I"m pretty sure there are only two things that can so badly affect a young man's ability to think clearly in this situation: "hostesses" and "golden handshakes." I'm guessing there are ample amounts of both.

Remember when Will Campbell dropped is right before siging day? :(. Where is he at now, Miami? USC? FL? That's why I don't follow recruiting to a T until the papers are signed. I remembered I was committed to my old GF, we didn't get married.

There were rumors about him having decommited from usc, but nothing official, i don't remember reading in scout or rivals that he had in fact decommited, so it's not impressive to hear that he have recommited, i like our chances better than oregon and florida's chances, then again its a longshot.

He never officially decommitted, but since committments are informal until you sign a LOI, it's not necessary. When Carroll left USC he said he was "wife open" and that he was going to open his recruitment back up. That meant he was going to take visits elsewhere (he went to Oregon already and is planned for UF this week). He even called UM when it happened to see. I, like others on here, don't think we get him, but at this point there's a small possibility. The players are: USC, UF, Oregon, UM, SDSU. Probably in that order.

Oh yeah? Well if this is true, I think everyone will finally admit that we didn't really want him in the first place. I would absolutely hate to see him as a part of this offense. (sarcasm symbol)

Checked the umich directory this morning - a uniqname was created for Devin Gardner at 8:35 am today... that has to be him right? Who else would be creating a uniqname this far into the term?
