Basketball version of M Club banner?
Was watching the 1989 Illinois Basketball documentary on BTN mainly to laugh at them whining about how Michigan wasn't better than them despite Michigan beating them in the Final Four and then I saw this.
What is that? Does anyone remember that banner? On the show, the teams runs under it and jumps and touches it like Football does with the M Club banner.
I imagined you of all people on this site would know everything about.
Completely forgot about that. Thanks for sharing.

I miss the original block M design at center court. Maybe they could have made it a bit larger to fill out the circle, but I've never been a fan of the current huge block M.
I'm exactly the opposite. I love the current BIG block M. Hated the micro machine style M from the Fab Five days.
how about the half basketball at the top of each key? yikes that was ugly
I'll say it: In context of the late 90s, it worked. I kind of liked it, even if I liked the old court more.
What we have now is much better.
However, just for shits and giggles, I would like to see a maize M with a blue outline, just to see it. Not sure if I'd like it better, but I'd like to see the concept.
We have 125 versions of the helmet, can't someone get a concept floor design that just switches the colors on the block M and leaves everything else the same?
I like it better than the blue with maize outline.
I don't understand, though, why basketball court logos have to be so goddamn huge these days. I mean, this was really nice and classy.
Every school seems to have a giant midcourt logo nowadays. Gotta promote the brand, I guess.
If they took it back to this size and put the state of Michigan shape in a darker stain behind it that would look pretty dang awesome.
I'm going to have my living room floor painted this......
....... and then be single forever.
Already is a maize M with blue outline
No it's not...it's blue with a maize outline.
I too prefer the former version. oh well.
The kid wasn't even born when this game was played. In fact, I think it was 7-8 years before he was born.
Illinois did cry like some bitches about that game. It is my favorite basketball game ever played by UM. Illinois won the Big10 that year, were a #1 seed. In addition, Illinois whipped Michigan both times they played in the regular season that year, 96-84 in Champagne and 89-73 in the final game of the regular season in Ann Arbor (last game of the season as there was no B1G tourney then).
Don't forget WD, Michigan beat #2 seed North Carolina, #5 seed Virginia and #3 seed Seton Hall during that run to the Title. Epic . . .
1989, That was my senior year. The last regular season game against Illinois, I had season tickets two rows behind visiting bench. My roommates bailed on me and scalped their tickets before the Illinois game and I was so mad at them. Then I went and sat as Illinois kicked our butts. I was so ticked off at how bad Freider coached that game and team, and then he left and the rest was history.
There were a few games in the early-mid 90s when they brought out the actual M Club banner for basketball games, back in the era when the maize uniforms making an appearance meant it was a truly special or important game. The only problem was the banner was kind of big--I'm not even sure they had it open at full width.
I don't remember this banner from the OP. But it looks really strange. Really, there's not much point for a banner for basketball. Let football have its thing.
It was so nice to watch that B1G Elite. I didn't see the whole thing, but it's this nice enjoyable story about what seem to be good guys and elite players making a once in a lifetime run, and right at the climax your favorite team runs in and dunks on everyone, hitting the shots and cutting down nets.
WD awesome share-TY
I want to see this banner back up.
