Basketball freshmen jersey numbers/roster released: Chatman #3

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

They're here!!

  • #3 Kam Chatman
  • #5 D.J. Wilson
  • #12 Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman
  • #24 Aubrey Dawkins
  • #30 Austin Hatch
  • #32 Ricky Doyle

Also, as posted awhile ago, Andrew Dakich will now wear #11.

The complete roster is up here.

Look at how MAAR's name needs two lines to fit. I love it.

Okay, that's my last thread for a couple days.

Interesting that Chatman is listed as a "guard/forward".  I know we know he's quite versatile, but I also think we assume he'll start at the 4, which is of course very "forward".

Doyle also listed as "forward" rather than "center".

In theory he could play anywhere from 4 to 1 over his career - depending on how long it lasts and who we land in recruiting.  Of course if we land a premier '16 PG the 1 goes out the window but his dad apparently talked to Beilein (Jordan?  I don't remember who) and there was discussion he could eventually be a 1 or have the skills for it or something.   At minimum I would think he does 2-4 thru his career but mostly 3-4.  Especially since he may only be here 2 years or whatnot (just guessing) and the needs at that time will be front court players due to recent early entry losses.

Remember as Bacari said what your "position" is is mostly a definition of who you defend, for the 2-4.  (1 and 5 are their own situations)

I can't wait for the hoops season to start.

I haven't bought a sports jersey in years, but I very well may have to buy an Austin Hatch #30 jersey this year.

Kam and D.J. both 210.  6-7 and 6-9 respectively, as expected

MAAR is 10 pounds heavier than Dawkins though 2 inches shorter

Doyle is listed at 6-10(!) 250.

Also, #12 Cole McConnell and #14 Brad Anlauf are both no longer listed on the roster.

Not sure if they've left the program or it's just some weird NCAA rule where they can't list a certain amount of walk ons yet.

I'm not saying they need to retire Trey's jersey right now, but typically jerseys that will be retired are unofficially taken out of circulation in the interim. He was literally the best player to play at Michigan in decades (even Chris Webber, who was a #1 overall pick wasn't as decorated in his sophomore year as Trey) and probably the best in the B1G in decades and since Michigan doesn't have a rule stating one has to earn a degree to have their number retired I would expect him to be honored at some point.

"Best in the Big Ten in decades"

That's debatable.  There's Mateen Cleaves, who won back-to-back B10 player of the year awards.  Evan Turner, also won a B10 and a National POTY award.  Jim Jackson won back-to-back B10 POTY and a national POTY award.

I love Trey as much as anyone, but we're talking all-time greats - we need to get some time away from his reign to gain perspective.  There's a reason people's numbers aren't retired immediately, except in rare cases.

Glen Rice was B10 POTY, didn't win a National POTY award, but DID win a national title and played four years at Michigan.  That's the type of resume we'd have to compare Trey to.

The big thing Trey has going for him is that he swept the NPOTY awards.  And that's a big thing.  But retired/honored numbers are given on more than just awards resumes - there's an emotional aspect to it.  Trey's shot vs. KU fills one of those big emotional bullet points - I've never seen AA celebrate like after that shot.  However, it's tough to build a huge emotional bond after just two years.  It just is.

Someday?  Maybe.  But I think that's a decision that requires time to gain perspective.

It's just my personal opinion that 2 years in the program is not long enough.

The most dominant B10 player I've seen in decades is still Glenn Robinson II, aka Big Dog.  That guy was just money - inside and mid-range was great.  Calbert Cheaney prob should be in the top 5 too.

Does Brian Cardinal get honorable mention for figring out how to play 8 straight years?

Burke definitely deserves to have #3 be an honored jersey eventually, IMO. Retiring his number might be a bit of a stretch though, largely because he only stayed two years. Then again, in this day and age, it's usually in a player's best interest to go pro when they're a probable lottery pick and their stock is about as high as it's going to get. It really wouldn't have been fair to expect Trey to come back. So maybe with that taken into account, Burke could at least be considered for having having his number retired someday.

I'd lean more towards your thought process.

Here's a question though: Who had more of an impact on Michigan basketball: Trey Burke or Jalen Rose?

That's a very tough question to answer.  And Jalen's number isn't up there, even though he was cleared of any of the Fab Five issues.

When I look at UM's current resurgence, I can't say it was led by Trey Burke.  It's obviously a Beilein thing (and he may go done as the best ever when it's all said and done).  But when I look at players that revitalized a program, I look at Zack Novak and THJr a little more than Trey.  And if we're completely honest, a lot of people around here were not very high on Trey Burke halfway through B10 season his sophomore year.  He cranked it up and had an amazing tournament to earn all his awards, but it wasn't like a fully dominant year in the vein of Kevin Durant (who's number was retired after 1 year, but at a program with much less bball history than UM).

If we won that last game, it's a no-brainer.  But we didn't - so it's up for debate and the two year thing will be tough to come over for a while, I think.

I am as appreciative of Zack and Stu as anyone, and their leadership was absolutely instrumental in rebuilding the program to where it is today, but let's be real...Trey accomplished more basketball wise than both of them.

Additionally, it just isn't realistic to expect a basketball player as accomplished as Trey (and Stauskas for that matter) to stay in school one minute later than when they receive that first lottery grade. There is too much pressure on these kids to start earning immediately, not to mention NBA GM's who feel that a 22-year old is nothing compared to a 20-year old with identical skill. I am a huge advocate of getting an education and being well-rounded, but guys like Tyler Hansbrough and Doug McDermott are huge exceptions to the rule these days.

I'm obviously not comparing the individual accomplishments of Trey and Novak.  I'm comparing their contribution to the program.

Obviously top talent leaves early - which is why I say you have to wait and get a better perspective.

I don't blame players for leaving early.  I argued incessantly that GR3 made the right decision to leave and I still believe that.  But it also doesn't mean that their impact on the program doesn't suffer.  It does.  No matter how great you are, leaving early lessens an impact you could have on a program.

Perhaps we see honored jerseys as a different thing.  You seem to see it as another individual award, given to the best players to play for Michigan.  I see it as recognition of a body of work that had a major impact on a basketball program.  When I look at it from that perspective, guys like Jalen Rose, Zack Novak, Tim Hardaway Jr, Jordan Morgan are guys that moved a program from one phase to another or have had an everlasting impact.  They are guys that litter the Michigan record books - career points, career threes, career rebounds, career games played.  They are guys that all had spectacular individual performances.  They are guys that won championships.  Trey did a lot of those things - most of those things.  Though, most of what he did was in a 4 month span and it was spectacular.  We need time to gain perspective on how spectacular what he did is and where it will stand in Michigan lore.

Yeah, a NC would probably do it for Trey. That makes the blown foul call on his clean/awesome block against Peyton Siva extra shitty since it *might* have affected the game's outcome.

But he did set a new program record for assists in single season (260); it was by a good margin too, so that may stand for a long time. Plus sweeping the four major NPOY awards is pretty huge. Maybe that's enough to be the 6th guy to get his number retired, but who knows.

This is actually the only relevant part of this whole thread and of course has 2 comments about it :)

It opens up another scholarship for the next class assuming Caris goes pro.  If Hatch gets reclassified that's 3.

And hey just like that we got us some senior leadership.

Interesting that we would do that for a player who Beilein said was essentially unstoppable :)
