I don't get how a player we might not want and have other players at least near as good committed commits to MSU and it rates 140 posts, but the best player to consider us in basketball in decades eliminates us (maybe) and is favored to go to MSU, and it rates 14 posts.

I agree with you both. And I'm not shocked that there's a lot of interest in the other post...more the lack of interest in this post. Because I thought the comparative value to the programs would mitigate the different a little. MSU has always gotten some food players, and they'll probably get more under the current staff. But one very good but not elite player at a position we're stocked and could still get stronger at (who we may or may not even want) versus the type of guy we haven't been able to get and could be the first to lead the way. He wouldn't make or break MSU's program, but certainly would help quell the turnaround in recruiting, much like Sparty getting killed in football recruiting has taken the momentum off their 11-2 season.

<br>This to me is a far bigger deal. We have to wait till 2013 for even a shot at a blue-chipper, a guy who could be an instant big time help. Now we're a long way away from anyone signing (in either sport) so who knows. But this is a far bigger blow to Michigan's program than the other guy, who doesn't matter unless it means State starts reeling in ten more like him. And even then, we're still probably getting better players. Not so in basketball.
Hasn't Harris been considered a pretty long shot for Michigan all along? If he did eliminate U-M (which evidently he hasn't), the news wouldn't be that surprising, so why would you expect a great deal of discussion about it?
In any case, the OP was up for only about a hour before MGoShoe more or less shot down the idea that Harris had eliminated Michigan. So that probably forestalled some discussion as well.
We had slowed down and not accepted Pittman's commitment, so why was it a big shock he decided to go someplace else?
I get the comparison you're making, but setting aside the greater interest in football vs. basketball, it seems there was a lot more to discuss in regard to Pittman, such as why Michigan backed off on its offer.
Back to Harris/basketball: Isn't it possible that Robinson III will end up being the type of instant-impact player that you're looking for? At this point, I'm thinking Beilein won't be signing anyone else for 2012. If he could he get commitments from Monte Morris and Zak Irvin for 2013, I'd be more than satisfied with the 2012/2013 classes. Even if he lands only Morris or one of the other top point guards, I think Michigan will be in pretty good shape.
I'm not sure that you fall into this category, but it seems like some people keep pointing to the lack of five-star recruits signing with Michigan as an indictment on Beilein. Do you think he cannot succeed here without them?
Because he's proven he can have some success without them. But I do think he needs them to eventually have ultimate success - National Championship(s). Because you eventually hit a team you can't out scheme, or has scheme AND talent. I think if you want to be a consistent favorite for the Big Ten Title and National runs, you need to regular bring in a few of those guys to go with the other level guys we're already getting. We don't need to be Kentucky. Where I differ from others is that I believe Beilein CAN get these guys to come to Michigan....we just always seem to be missing out, and waiting another year. Maybe it is 2013, with Morris. But we heard that with Harris, and if Morris goes elsewhere, here we go again. (And FYI I'm guessing Robinson's ceiling is Hardaway like, which is good, no doubt, but still doesn't get you past the second round of the Tournament).
But obviously there isn't much other concern, so I'm just arguing with myself, and I've been overly worried about other B-Ball related things. It's not an indictment on Beilein. It's the crapshoot of recruiting, And I don't really get the least bit freaked out over losing one football recruit, because I know there are loads of others, and we'll get them, because we're rolling there. And in football, it's a numbers game. Basketball, one or two guys can be everything. But I was ready to let it go, but I always appreciate your views on basketball (and other stuff) and asked a legit question so I thought you deserved an answer.
I agree with you that it is possible for Beilein to recruit elite players to Michigan--and I want him to keep going after them--but where we differ is that I think Michigan can compete for Big Ten titles and win a national championship without landing any. Had Morris not gone pro, the Final Four would have been a realisitic goal for next year, so I don't agree that Beilein can't get Michigan past the second round (or win Big Ten titles) with the types of players he's been able to land so far.
