Baseball swept by Cal, all walkoff losses, in Bakich's debut

Over the weekend, Michigan Baseball began their 2013 campaign out in Berkeley against cal. It was also the debut of the Erik Bakich era here.

Friday, Michigan went down 5-4 in 11 innings.

Saturday, Michigan lost 6-5 in 10 innings after leading most of the game.

And today, Michigan lost 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th on cal walkoff RBI.

Certainly all close games that could have gone either way for the young team but a strong showing nonetheless.

Stats from Friday: Trent Szkutnik (Loss; 0-1); RBIs: Biondi, Sexton, Delaney. Runs: O'Neill, White, Martin, Cronenworth

Stats from Saturday: Jacob Cronenworth (Loss; 0-1) RBIs: O'Neill, Maezes (2), Cronenworth. Runs: Biondi (2), O'Neill, Cronenworth, Delaney.

Stats from Sunday: Alex Lakatos (Loss; 0-1) RBIs: None. Runs: O'Neill

Top weekend performer: Michael O'Neill, 3 runs, 1 RBI

Michigan will head to their home away from home in Port St. Lucie, FL (home of the Mets spring home whom are owned by alumnus Fred Wilpon) where they will play fordham on Friday, twice on Saturday in a doubleheader and will take on the New York Mets in an exhibition Sunday.

Is Cal projected to be a solid team this year? Are they a historically good program? I think I remember hearing that they were very close to cancelling the baseball program.

They're projected to finish 7th or 8th in the Pac 12, which would probably be good enough to challenge for the B1G if we switched places. They made it to the CWS two years ago, but finished around .500 last year. They start alot of freshman and sophomores like we do.

While we didn't get a win, it was a decent showing for us IMO. Hope the three walk off losses don't hurt any confidence we have.

I don't want a "bubble", those things are ugly as hell and look like a damn bouncy-house.  Their appearance blights the look of my community every winter when they pop up and I don't want to see any of those things in Ann Arbor.  If the AD is making so much money every year, a real indoor stadium seems like a worthwhile investment in a sport people actually care about.  How much did it cost to repaint the stadium or build those fields way-a-ways down State Street?  Could've easily put those funds towards a proper stadium so we can compete with the SEC in another sport not named basketball.

If they're gonna do that, they'd have to do one at Alumni Field too.

I think the smarter investment would ask for a little help from Mr. Wilpon again, and build a baseball stadium in Port St. Lucie next to the Mets' spring training home. Michigan already is invited down to Port St. Lucie for a weekend every year.

Why not just build a stadium down there and play ALL of the games that aren't able to be played up here, there.

Actually, go to SEC and Big 12 country. That is their B sport next to football down there.

The last B1G team to go the College World Series was Michigan in 1984. That speaks to why the perception of college baseball is that "nobody cares" up here.

Nobody outside of UK and florida care about college basketball in SEC country.

MGoBlue doesn't have the Wings in the all-time record list and Google isn't showing anything at all.

There's pretty much no way M ever beat the Red Wings with anything like a regular roster. Detroit was a playoff team from 1938-1958, went to the finals from 1941-43 and got Gordie Howe in 1946. Meanwhile, M was 13-47-6 before Gordie Howe arrived and after that would have been playing against (an albeit young version of) the best player in history to that point.

The Wings were very strong with at least a few guys in the Hall of Fame every year of the decade. Meanwhile, M didn't even have an NCAA All-American in the decade until the championship year in 1948 (when they had two), and had a pretty terrible record until 1945-46 which was Gordie Howe's rookie year.

Page 33, "Notable Exhibition Games."  Michigan was 1-9-0 vs the Detroit Red Wings, with a 9-7 win on November 28, 1947.

Of course, there is no way any professional team would use their regular lineup against a college team now, and there is no way that they did so back then, either.  I think the 9-7 score is a clue.  The story I read is that the goalie situation in those games was...fluid.  The teams would switch goalies mid-game, or the Red Wings would use their trainer in goal (although he was also their regular back-up goalie), or they would play a non-goalie in net.

but I still say there's absolutely no way the newly formed Production Line played much (possibly didn't dress), and the Wings starting goalie was a Hall of Famer with a 2.46GAA in the NHL that season, so I'd say there's virtually no chance M played against Lumley. I'd love to see a box score for this game; it would be very interesting to look at.

Edit: Just read the goalie stuff closely; that makes a lot more sense. Informative as always, Alton.

Turn to page 21 of the block of newspapers (it's on page 3 of the Saturday, November 29, 1947 paper), headline "'M' Skaters Defeat Wings, 9-7."  The teams used each other's goalies for the whole game, and the teams swapped first lines after the first period (Sid Abel scored a hat trick for Michigan).  I only wish somebody had snapped a picture of Gordie Howe wearing a Michigan uniform.

Like all exhibitions, the idea is for the fans to have fun, rather than for the players to try their hardest.  From the article, it sounds like the game was a lot of fun--and many other fun things were happening in Michigan sports at the time.

Don't miss the letter to the editior from George E. Carrothers with an anecdote about Fielding Yost:

"A few years after the appearance of 'The Victors,' at the finish of one of Michigan's customary victories, Mr. Elbel said to Coach Yost, 'Aren't you glad I wrote "The Victors"?'  The coach at once said that he was glad, that they liked very much to sing the selection, and that the whole University was glad he wrote it.  Then Mr. Yost with, I imagine, a twinkle in his eye, asked, 'Aren't you glad you came to a school where you could write "The Victors"?'"

Thanks for the legwork on this, I know what I'll be doing for the next hour now.

Still, characterizing it as a win (which M's archives/Daily article here certainly don't try to do, but looked like the case here) is disingenuous, in my opinion. The 2013 version of M hockey could give an NHL team a game with those rules, which are incidently the same that my high school used for our JV/Varsity scrimmage.

What jumped out at me from the series with Cal was Evan Hill's collegiate debut today. He went seven innings, allowed just five hits and one run, struck out three, and walked only one. He was projected to be one of the top newcomers in the Big Ten, and based on that performance he just might live up to the hype.

I came into today pretty much writing it off w/ a freshman #3 starter  making his debut going to the hill. Obviously we couldn't watch the game, but if he can perform at a similar level for much of the season, our conference prospects go up quite a bit.

Not just Evan Hill, but also Pioneer High School's Travis Maezes, who is batting third and starting at third base.  Maezes was 4-for-11 with 2 walks and 2 steals.

Michigan's 12 starters this weekend (3 pitchers & 1 at each other position) included 4 freshmen and 4 sophomores, which is a good sign--that typically means significant improvement by the end of the season.  Hopefully they get in the habit of winning this weekend against Fordham so they can pick up some wins during their spring break trips to Florida and California.

It was nice to keep these games close, but giving up runs in the bottom of the 9th in 3 straight games shows we need to find a reliable reliever.

It's fun thinking about college baseball again.
