It wasn't always like that with smaller crowds. In the 80s, baseball was a close #3 sport on campus behind football and basketball.
It will change soon. Michigan starts having more success like softball and you'll see the change.
Two straight RBIs makes it 7-1 Michigan in the Bottom of the 7th!
Maezes with his fourth run of the day makes it 8-1 Michigan going to the 8th inning!
Penn State probably has the worst baseball team in the conference, but it's still impressive that the team got its second-straight Big Ten sweep. For some perspective, the team is now 20-14 overall, after winning just 22 games all of last year, and they now have 7 conference victories, after getting just 8 in 2012. As one of the Big Ten baseball experts has tweeted, Erik Bakich at this point has to be the leading candidate for conference coach of the year.
Also, the OP says Northwestern is next. That's Michigan's next Big Ten opponent, but they have two nonconference home games scheduled during the week—Tuesday vs. Notre Dame and Wednesday vs. EMU.
news. Both BB and SB are leading the Big Ten. I cant wait to catch a BB game.
Through 4 weekends of the 24-game schedule, the B1G standings:
t1. Michigan (7-2)
t1. Minnesota (7-2)
t3. Indiana (8-4)
t3. Nebraska (8-4)
5. Ohio State (7-5)
t6. Illinois (5-4)
t6. Michigan State (5-4)
t8. Northwestern (4-8)
t8. Purdue (4-8)
10. Iowa (2-7)
11. Penn State (0-9)
Some teams have already had their bye week and have played 9 games, others have their bye week some time in the next 5 weeks, and have played 12 games. Barring rain, all teams will end up with 24. Wisconsin does not have a baseball team.
The key to making the NCAA tournament is to get a top-2 finish, because the top 2 teams receive byes in the 6-team Big Ten tournament, and it is likely that Michigan will need to win the Big Ten tournament to qualify for the NCAAs.
M has now gone 11 straight games without giving up more than 3 runs. This streak includes all 9 B1G games.
