Baseball destroys Northwestern 19-1 for series win

After a disappointing 9-8 setback loss to 11th place Northwestern yesterday after Michigan destroyed them 12-4 on Friday night, Michigan came out with vengeance today in their final B1G game of the season.

Michigan came out in the 1st inning and took a 3-0 lead on a Cronenworth RBI and two runs scoring due to a throwing error.

In the 3rd inning, Northwestern had the bases loaded but only scored one run on a sac fly to make it 3-1 Michigan.

Michigan began adding to their lead in the next inning on a Kendall Patrick sac fly and a Jackson Glines RBI to make it 5-1.

They really kicked things up a notch in the 6th inning. Jackson Glines added to his RBI total with a single to right that scored two runs putting the score at 7-1 Michigan and giving Glines 3 RBIs on the day.

Jake Bivens scored on a wild pitch, making it 8-1 and then Northwestern began to self-destruct. A bases loaded walk and a hit by pitch pushed across two more runs making it 10-1 Michigan STILL in the 6th inning.

Kendall Patrick reached on a fielder's choice scoring another run and then right after that, back-to-back doubles by Johnny Slater and Jake Bivens made it 14-1 Michigan after 6 innings.

The follies for Northwestern continued in the 8th inning, hitting THREE Michigan batters in a row while the bases were loaded to make it 17-1. Hector Gutierrez scored Michigan's final runs with a single to make it a 19-1 final.

Michigan finishes with a 14-10 record in the B1G and are 31-21 overall. They clinched a B1G Tournament berth with their win on Friday night over Northwestern.

There are still B1G games to be played next weekend, but Michigan has a bye in B1G play next week so that is why their B1G slate is complete. They will play a 3-game series with #12 Oklahoma State next weekend. That is a monster opportunity to recover some ground with their RPI rank. Still don't think it will be enough even with a sweep, though.

Looks like they'll have to win the B1G Tournament to get into the NCAA Tournament.

I was at the game and, man, did Northwestern pitching really suck.

9 walks and 7(!!!) HBP by the NW staff.  The rain stayed away just enough for a big win.  Plus, moms got free kettle corn!  Like a huge bag of it!
