62.1%... so progress being made
Barry Larkin Miss HoF Class
That's definitely encouraging that he got to 62%. I think he was at about 55% last year, so that's a sizable jump. It might take a couple years, but he should definitely make it.
The only knock on Barry is that he couldn't stay healthy. It would be interesting to see how healthy Lark would have stayed if he didn't play on Astroturf his entire career. The old-school Astroturf was like playing on concrete, and had to really wear on him. At one point in his career he actually offered to pay to have grass installed at the Reds ballpark. Regardless, when healthy he was one of the best all-around shortstops of all time.
He will get in. Just have to wait a little longer.
At 62.1% he's a lock to get in, and it will probably happen next year with a very weak incoming ballot class. I hope so--one of the great players of his era.
No offense to him, and I know hes a Michigan man, but at no point in his career did I ever think he was a HoF player. Really, really good, but not an all time great. But that's just my opinion.
Yeah, but when you look at the numbers he was probably the best NL shortstop of the 80s and 90s. The problem was he suffered from lack of exposure in a small market, a humble personality and lack of a singular defining moment. He was just quietly great for a long time.
Actually the reds were my second favorite team at the time after the tigers. I can't put my finger on why I don't hold him in such regard...
Ozzie Smith is a Hall of Famer with his putrid offensive stats, Larkin is absolutely a Hall of Famer. Next year.
I'm disappointed that Barry didn't get in this round. He is definitely deserving of the HOF and should go in next year.
I'm sorry, but for him to get the votes he does, and for Ozzie Smith to get in when he couldn't hit water if he was thrown out of a boat, and to watch Alan Trammell get shit on year after year really rubs me the wrong way. I saw them both in their primes, and I have nothing against Larkin, but I'd take Trammell over him every day.
