Hmm. Our O-Line seemed to do well in his absence, but it would certainly be nice to have him back for the ND game.

Overall the O-line was good, but Schofield filling in at left guard missed a few key blocks. The one in particular that was blatant was when Denard scrambled for a first down because he had a d-lineman in his face before he even had a chance to view the field (I believe it was in the 2nd quarter). Let's hope it was just a mental thing that can be corrected.

My parents would tell you I was injured/sick if I was suspended and didn't want people to know about it too
September 4th, 2011 at 10:17 AM ^
though presumably on the front page - woolfolk was a minor sprain of his non-injured ankle and 'could have gone in if he needed to'

Barnum was not suspended.
September 4th, 2011 at 11:33 AM ^
Thanks for clearly that up for me. For some reason, the Forum title "Barnum was not suspended" and OP content saying that he was not suspended left me confused as to whether or not he had been suspended.

yea after the rain delay he was back on the field running around doing warmups and looked completely fine to me

In Hoke's post-game presser, I think someone asked him about Barnum (although I couldn't hear the question.
Hoke responded by saying we didn't dress him, and nothing further.
Not sure that means anything, but its interesting with all the misinformation out there on a relativley minor situation.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:54 AM ^
I don't think anybody asked him (Hoke) about any player specifically. He was asked about suspended players in general. That's when he gave the response about suspended players not dressing.

Where did Patrick, James and crew get their obvious certainty that he was suspended for breaking team rules?...further indication their prep for this game was particularly shoddy
September 4th, 2011 at 11:12 AM ^
Out for Michigan today (correcting w/Gordon ID): CAM Gordon (injury), Barnum, Evans, Hopkins (team matter). Schofield starts OL for Barnum

Probably from the school's Sports Information Director.

Got that...they took it a step further in turning "missing the game for a team matter" into "suspended for breaking team rules".
I realize it might be sematics but they must have enough of a staff that they can be more precise than that
September 4th, 2011 at 12:11 PM ^
Missing the game for a team matter is the same as being suspended for breaking team rules. Unless you can think of a single team matter other than a suspension that would include not dressing for a home game. If Barnum wasn't really suspended, the miscommunication started with the Athletic Department/SID it isn't the announcer's fault. They did plenty of other dumb shit that deserves critisism. This isn't one of them.

Maybe he had to go pick up the jerseys for next Saturday
September 4th, 2011 at 1:36 PM ^
I didn't say he was or he wasn't. They should just be more careful in repeating what was said, not their interpretation, unless they make the distinction clear, which they did not. It's sloppy reporting, and indicative of a generally sloppy standard of preparation. The fact you accept that as normal is indicative of how standards have been lowered across the board in media "reporting".
If the AD was obviously careful enough to state it a certain way they owe it to their viewers to do the same.

Maybe the cleaners gave their jerseys to another customer by mistake and couldn't get the jerseys back before game time.
September 4th, 2011 at 12:14 PM ^
That could be read to say Gordan was out for injury, Hopkins out for team matter and Barnum and Evans out for unspecified reasons. That is the parenthetical "team matter" after Hopkins may only apply to Hopkins. Similarly, maybe what came from the SID was vague or open to misintrepretation.

Patrick and James were already the two of the least likeable commentators in college football already, but I hate them much, much more after yesterday's abomination of a job.
During our first offensive drive, they honestly sounded like they were reading from a script they had written up the previous night on positives about the "new offense." Incredibly, they managed to say these things immediately after witnessing quarterback sweeps in 3-wide, shotgun formations.
I would love to hear your take on their work yesterday or anyone else that noticed big mistakes they made or stupid things they said. This could be a diary thread.

During Touissants big run Patrick called him Shaw. After the camera clearly showed it to be Touissant he still called him Shaw. James then correctly identified it as Touissant.

but but but Ace Williams and Section 1 said he was suspended...who to believe??...

According to mgoblue player participation, the following true freshmen saw action:

Obviously, Beyer saw action on defense at SLB.
Wile, Clark, Countess, and Brown played special teams. Only five redshirts burned (barring injury) - though maybe more would've gotten in had play resumed.

*** ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan coach Brady Hoke has decided
not to allow starting offensive guard Ricky Barnum to be in uniform
for the opener.
The school said Barnum, backup running back Stephen Hopkins and
reserve linebacker Marell Evans would not play Saturday against
Western Michigan because of a team matter.
Starting linebacker Cam Gordon wasn't expected to play because
of a back injury. ***
