The band played east? No stats on the scoreboard?

Submitted by docwhoblocked on

My sister in law noticed that the band mostly played to the east side of the field for the first time in our memory.  Her comment was that that was "where the rich people were sitting".  We enjoyed it because we are more east than west (southeast to be exact) and could actually hear most of the music.  I also hate the fact that I no longer have the yards gained passing and running on the scoreboard.  grrrrr!

Sorry, but I'm kinda getting tired of all the posts about problems with the stadium/gameday experience.

I know that we just had our first game and such.

But just in the past 3 or so hours I have seen posts on:

Pop Evil when players fill tunnel

Advertising in Michigan Stadium (kinda)

Scoreboard Transcription

Was the Band miked up

The Band playing east

These are fine, I guess, but it seems that they could have been consolidated in some way. I would much rather see talk about the game itself, the players, coaches, etc rather than all this other noise.

I've got to agree, this place has a tendancy to turn into a bitch fest.  Whine about this, bitch about that (especially after a win wtf!!).  I get it, I have beef with some of the stuff too (ahem, advertising creeping its way into the stadium), but I try not to really get into it around here.  There's already just toooooo much bitching.  My opinion, go tell ur wife/gf, thats what they're there for.   Sometimes its straight up mLive around here... and that is so so sad

The band's been playing east the past few years. And all of the "rich" people sit on the west side of the stadium. It was a great game to open up the Hoke era. Why is everyone finding a reason to bitch?

This thread is about the game atmosphere and there are tons of people bitching about the game atmosphere, which is what I was referring to. Can talk about the game itself all you want as that could be valuable conversation.

in fact I am sure of it.  Note that I said that I enjoyed the band more not less.  Looks like I am not the only one who missed the stats and I am glad that they are fixing that.

I have been going to games since 1957 so I guess I do enjoy the game day experience or would not have gone to the last 300 games or so.  Thought the board was just such a place where somewhat off topic subjects could be shared.  My "hippie" sister in law is a Lutheran school teacher.  Not sure why she comes in for name calling.  She was just happy to hear the band better for a change.

Michigan sports television just converted their entire operation--control room, all broadcast equipment, etc.--from standard def. to HD. This after having moved from the space at Crisler Arena to essentially a storage room in the east tower of the stadium. That operation runs the new scoreboards, too.

TS Sports, the vendor, has been working for 3 months to install the boards and to get everything to operate properly.  There were a number of unforeseen interruptions not the fault of TS or MSTV, including a major f-up Friday night that required the TS guys to work all night to fix it in time for game day.

Your "easiest trial run" involved a lot more than just pressing the "on" button.

There will be noticeable differences for ND - like LOS yard line and running stats.

Yeah, the new scoreboard will take some getting used to.  The old one was very straightforward.  I really like the new one, but will have to learn where to look for stats, etc.

If they're playing to the east, it is really only because that is the direction that the band--as a whole--is facing. They've been in those seats for at least five years now.

Are you talking about the band playing toward the east during halftime? It could be that the rich people sit there, or if you actually take more than a second to think about it, it's probably because the east never gets any music pointed their way when the band is on the field.  Breakdown of which direction the band is pointing (pregame):

North: the beginning of The Victors, most of Varsity, 1/4 of Let's Go Blue, and the trio when the band is leaving the field after pregame.

West: M Fanfare, the end of Varsity, the Star Spangled Banner, The Victors trio (2x when the players come out), and 1/4 of Let's Go Blue.

South:  the opposing team's fight song (which isn't necessarily a plus, but it's there), The Victors trio and break strain, and 1/4 of Let's Go Blue.

East: 1/4 of Let's Go Blue.

Sorry if I forgot something in there, but it seems to be pretty accurate to me.

Also, the west gets almost all of the halftime music, the forms are tailored to  the home sideline, and I'm not going to mention the songs played in the stands since they're mic'd now. My guess is you're looking for another reason to complain and get people all concerned about another way that Michigan is selling out and ruining the tradition, but the fact is it was time for the east to hear some music.
