Bama gets way more practice time than Clemson

Submitted by superstringer on

This rule is going to screw with us next year, when we make the 15th game of the season.

Apparently, Alabama has unlimited practice time for the Jan. 11 game -- whereas, Clemson is limited to 4 hours a day, 20 hours a week (other than today and tomorrow).  The NCAA limits practice to 20 hours per week during the semester.  Clemson's semester starts Wednesday.  But Alabama's doesn't start until Jan. 13, AFTER the big game, so Alabama has no limitations on practice.

(Yes, bleacher report, but, it's not an opinion, it's a news item.)

Ahhh, the NCAA.  Just another reason to hate it even more.

Because they're idiots.

This happens in all sports.

OSU used to be (still is???) on trimesters. They used (still do??) get unlimited practices until mid-September because they weren't in school.

I'm not sure if they switched to semesters, but this isn't new.

Michigan and most schools would end fall camp and go to the 20 hour a week rule and OSU and some of the west coast schools on trimesters could practice whenever they wanted.

It makes no sense really. Just start the 20 hour/week rule when schools start class and do it for everyone. In reality, they're football players, if they don't have to go to class or practice, they're going to be doing a bunch of football related stuff anyway - just without coaches.

...especially if you're preparing for a national championship. So even if you did change the rule, they're still going to practice, lift and watch film on their own because there's nothing else to do and it's such a big stage. AND it's an opportunity to get ahead of the opposition.

I seriously doubt the Clemson players will be going to class this week.  I'm guessing they are going to be arriving in Glendale no later than Friday.

This happened with Oregon last year too. OSU started back in early January and Oregon was still on break. Obviously the extra practice time did not help the ducks. We'll see what it does for Bama.

They ought to.  I mean, here's an example of Cardale Jones' class schedule.  All the information is right there.

If Virginia Tech made the title game they'd be in the same boat as Bama.

Harvard doesn't restart school til the 25th.

Oklahoma doesn't go back til the 19th. So if they beat Clemson both teams would have unlimited practice time.

Ohio State did it last year.

It wasn't written with this kind of game in mind. It applies to all sports and all breaks during the season.

The fact that they're pushing back the end of the football season means they will probably add a new rule soon.

The rule has a good purpose. It just runs into an issue when there are only two teams playing and their schools have different schedules before the biggest game of the year.

But, in fairness, I doubt it will have that much effect. Wise coaches back off on their players in the days leading up to the game, to keep them fresh. So I think Clemson will have enough time to work.

But there should probably be an adjustment made.

How in the actual fuck has this 'rule' not already been fixed? It makes no sense why they wouldn't set a time for both teams to give them equal practice time. So ridiculous to just allow one team to have such an advantage.

Also, fuck Bama.

Some schools have January off or an optional month. At MIT, January is an independent study period that students/faculty/employees can use to learn or work more freely. I suppose if MIT was good at any sport this could be used to get around NCAA rules, but they suck at sports.

That Clemson is an SEC team just like FSU was an SEC team when they won the national championship.  Actually, OSU was also an SEC team last year when they won the championship becuase Meyer made them SEC speed!

So at least they are both from the best conference ever and it should be a close game....

Michigan is also now an SEC team after dismantling Florida.  Harbaugh's satellite camps made Michigan SEC.

Why should they start making sense now. Look at the helmet to a defenseless player rule whatever it was called. The referees could not figure that one out so they called it on the winning team. The losing team could leave their feet and hit the QB under chin with the top of their hemet or tear the helmet off a sliding QB diving on top of them and no calls. I know I am preaching to the choir here. Sorry, I can't get over that stupid rule like so many others for eligibility that we all know and love.

Did Rosenberg identify the specific weeks where too much stretching occurred?  Was it during class time, or in the summer.  Did he ask his sources about their summer schedule?
