Bad showing for BIG

Submitted by massblue on

Not a good day for the BIG. It saddens me to say it, but the only one who showed up was OSU. Even they showed there are holes in their defense.  ND may not be as good as we thought. So what does this say about BIG and UM?

Just win and don't worry about conference prestige. The only thing that matters is winning. M won yesterday. All good teams have bad games like that. How many times have we seen Ohio win close games like this against a team they should have defeated badly? A lot.

About everyone posting in this thread is a complete dumbass. You people make me sick. Yes, some teams played worse than expected! Some played better than expected also. Did anyone seriously expect a team that went 2-11 last year to beat a top 25 team? Did anyone seriously expect Purdue to play ND close? Did anyone expect Nebraska or Wisconsin to pull off the upset? Did anyone expect UCF to play that well? If you did, then you have the right to talk. Everyone else, shut the fuck up you are a disgrace to the University of Michigan with your horrific ignorance.

that will be an interesting data point in regards to how good UCF is.

Time will tell if my perception of last night is incorrect --- but UCF REALLY impressed me last night.  I thought Penn State played well.  But UCF was a clearly better team.  The game wasn't nearly as close as the score.  I think UCF is a legit Top-15 type team and will likely beat Louisville and win the American.

On a side note, good for UCF in that they are getting South Carolina to make the trip to Orlando.

I think we'll be well represented come TWIS. We've definitely got some healthy competition for "Tears of Unfathomable Sadness" and "Scott Tenorman of the Week."

If you look at so-called national championships over the last 50 years, you'll see that the B1G has very few. The idea that the Big Ten was somehow THE power conference until recently userped by the SEC is mythology reinforced by sportswriters.

In the days of the Big Two and Little Eight, the conference was the butt of jokes, but the limitation of members' bowl game appearances to the Rose Bowl only might have concealed the conference's weakness. And the Big Ten's Rose Bowl record wasn't really all that great.

It's silly to worry over which conference is better. For a variety of reasons, the conference is an average football conference, but it has a large and loyal fanbase that attends games, follows its teams, and puts a decent, but not great, product on the field.

The BCS has spoiled the enjoyment of football. Now everyone sucks unless they win an NC.

The B1G being percieved as weak has a tangible negative impact.  If a B1G team were to go undefeated this year, it would get shut out of the NC discussion if any of the following teams go undefeated:  Any SEC team, Oregon, Stanford, Clemson, FSU, Oklahoma.  Alabama could possibly even get away with a loss.

Before Ohio State fans bitch about this, they are the main reason above all that this is true.  Face-planting badly two years in a row in the NC game did more damage to the reputation of the conference than all the B1G bottom feeder losses put together.
