Bacon: Harbaugh getting $5 mil per year, same as SF deal

Submitted by umfan83 on

BREAKING NEWS: Straight from UM AD Jim Hackett. Harbaugh's salary will be roughly $5M a year, plus incentives, same basic contract as 49ers.

So much for "Harbaugh is only leaving the NFL because UM overpaid him"

He wants to win for his team, and he wants to make sure his assistants are well paid.

This reminds me of another Michigan QB, a guy named Brady. He would cut his contract so his team can sign more quality free agents.

Ugh, enough with unnamed, unaccountable sources...

What's that you say? Directly from the UM AD? And he was willing to be quoted on the record? And a document available through the Freedom of Information Act will shortly be signed and then visible to the public?

Sorry, you have been banished by the NFL Reporters Guild of America on the grounds of actually being a journalist.

Thanks JUB, someone has to do this right... (also Feldman, Brian, et al)

Seriously guys ... this is ridiculous if true.  Dude's market value was minimum 7M.  John makes 7M.

I am sure there are incentives in it for NCs and playoffs and such but damn.

Jim you can do no wrong from here - we grant you whatever you want.

And that 5M includes NEVER BUYING A DINNER EVER AGAIN IN AA or ANYWHERE A UM FAN IS.

Contracts like this often have a lot of money hidden in the details. If he's getting $5m per year with a $40m signing bonus, then that's riskier for Michigan than $8m/year straight up.

That said, if this is basically true, that's a tremendous action on his part.

Wow. I have to admit, I am really surprised by this. Jim Harbaugh is worth $8 mil/year and he knows it, yet he is taking a good salary and assembling a well paid staff. This shows his dedication to winning. I haven't been this happy to be a Michigan Football fan in a long time.

I keep trying to curb my enthusiasm but every day I learn something new that keeps increasing it!

I think it's hilarious.  His opinions are inconsequential and unabashed.  The guy couldn't have been more wrong, so it's time to point and laugh.

Of all the emotions swirling around this hire, the one that strikes me the oddest is the enmity at hacks who convinced themselves this wasn't happening.  Break out the popcorn, guys; this is real entertainment!  I'm laughing my head off.

Jim Harbaugh is awesome!

Lets Go Blue!

No man is more important than the team. No coach is more important than the team. The team, the team, the team.

We can hope that the "doing it for the money" narrative being pushed by a few folks around the Internet can be put to rest now. I might be a bit off here, but even if the original reported numbers were right, I still wouldn't think that money was the primary reason that Jim Harbaugh would choose to come back to Ann Arbor now. I like to believe he genuinely wants to be the person that fixes what has going awry and that's fine.

I've stated this before but the anticipation of hearing speak ABOUT the Michigan,  not speculation etc.,  at the press conference is going to be absolutely fantastic.  Details coming out like this,  wanting more pay for assistants,  just make it better and better.  This is going to be quite a ride.
