B1G to rename yet ANOTHER award

So maybe the B1G should rethink all these annual awards named after past players and athletes and coaches.... or, at least, adopt the Statue Rule:  no statues for living people, and so no annual awards named after them either.

We all probably saw the news about the bizarre double life of 44yo wife, mom, ex-Olympian, and, yes, obviously, logically, Las Vegas hooker, Suzy Favor-Hamilton.

http://espn.go.com/olympics/trackandfield/story/_/id/8766649/suzy-favor-hamilton-says-worked-escort

As the story mentions, the B1G's annual award to Top Female Athelete is named after her.

Correction: is currently named after her.  It's obviously gonna get renamed.

Smarmy jokes to follow, fer shoor.

I don't know, but given she was married and admits to going through some life issues, and prostitution seemed like a reasonable solution to said issues, I'm guessing this bespeaks a mental health issue.  There's no indication that a need for money was the driver of her behavior here.

If there's no mental health issue at play here, then I may change my answer to "awesome".  But the smart money's on terrible.

Hope she gets the help she needs, or at least finds happiness in whatever  path she chooses.

So, like, if your daughter was an amazing athlete at one of the 12, er, 14, er, many universities of the B1G... and she got the Female Athlete of the Year Award... and when you tell people that they go, "oh, wait, wasn't that named after the chick who was a prostitute?" and I think you'd be like... RENAME THAT AWARD!

A former female colleague used to tell me that, as an Annapolis grad, they used to have trouble for finding female role models who had gone to the Academy.  So the #1 Naval Academy female graduate they used to trumpet as a role model?  An astronaut.  Yeah, the one in diapers who drove cross country to beat up that other chick.  So, like, they don't use her as a role model anymore.

Point is, if you put someone up on a pedastal, they better be squeaky clean.  It's not like she was a lesbian; this isn't a comment about a personal trait.  She chose an illegal career.  You just can't put her name on an award.

Actually, if she operated out of Nevada, it would not be illegal, right?  It sounds like she went beyond Nevada though,  I don't know the legality of what she specifically did, but there are ways to make her profession legal (if she didn't, in fact, take those steps.)

I think my use of the word"personally" was misplaced.  I guess my point is, I don't disagree with removing her name from the award.  My point is as a person, I don't judge her- I'm not perfect, and it's not my right to.  As an Icon, yes she can be called into question.  Although, there are worse acts she could have committed (Paterno comes to mind.)

It's easy to cast judgment and say something like prostitution is wrong, but in reality that's an opinion and not a fact.  Yes, she's married and all that, but that's for her and her family to sort out.  In essence, I agree with renaming bit, but in all reality, few people are squeaky clean.

It's not legal.   Prostitution of any form is illegal within Clark County, where the city of Las Vegas is, and as the other posted said, in the rest of Nevada it must be in a licensed brothel.

That is why they call themselves "escorts" and not prostitutes, because they are pretending that the money isn't for sex.

Never had an escort or "paid services" in my 3 decades on this planet but $600 an hour is nothing compared to some I know of. That woman that was bumpin' with the Gov of NY (IIRC) was supposedly a grand an hour. Brinkley's husband got caught with that cute young girl in the Hamptons and then he confessed to an escort that charged $5k an hour. Funniest thing being that the cute, innocent and supposed victim he got caught with was rumored to be about a year into escorting that area for around a grand an hour, lol. Not saying $600 is chump change by any means but her name alone should have gotten her more. Maybe the age knocked it down? (Also, yes, get my info from a free gossip but mostly sexy pics/news of celeb women website that starts with "ego". Gets a view a day from me. Favor Hamilton told the website that only her husband was aware of her escort work, but that, "He tried, he tried to get me to stop. He wasn't supportive of this at all."

No Way!

Explain it to us then.  Other than the fee schedule, what's the difference?  Note that The Smoking Gun story that Mr. Yost links above has the following quote:

The profile also included her rates, from $600 for one hour to $6000 for a 24-hour period. “Kelly,” the site noted, provided “Full GFE,” or “girlfriend experience,” an intimate, less mechanical encounter. Additionally, the rate schedule noted, clients would be charged a $300 supplement for a particular sex act.

Her escort services included upcharges for particular sex acts.  So I admit to being "very confused between the difference in being an escort and being a prostitute".  Please shed some light on what you see as the meaningful distinction.

(I'm sure most of us understand that for "escorts" the hotels are nicer, and the clients are wealthier.  But it's still having sex for cash, which to my very confused mind is the same as prostitution.)

If you are specifically paying her for sex she is not an escort. I didn't say she was an escort, I said there is a huge difference between hooker and escort. Escorts are not illegal and can be found in every major city in America. Prostitution is for the most part illegal everywhere in America.

Thanks for being a condescending prick and still being wrong.

The person who wrote to the entire board "I think most of you are very confused between the difference in being an escort and being a prostitute" (without laying out any of their reasoning) thinks I'm condescending and a prick?

And this same person says I'm wrong about equating the two after I pointed out that the escort service in question published a rate schedule expressly setting forth rates for sex acts?

I mean, I get that you can make picayune distinctions between "escort" and "prostitute" - my point is it's a distinction without a difference.  And if you don't think this "Escort Service" is glorified a call girl service, I think you're very confused.

Sure. An escort uses the proper fork when eating her arugula and blackened salmon salad. The prostitute uses both hands when eating her Whopper with extra cheese.
