B1G to go to 9 or 10 game conference schedule

Submitted by dnak438 on

Per Delany's interview with the Chicago Tribune:

B1G's Delany to Tribune: Status quo of 8 conf games "not even on the table" now. It'll be either 9 or 10. Decision in spring.

A CBS write up is here with the following quote from Delany:

“We like to play each other, and those are not hollow words," said Delany. "We are getting larger and want to bind the conference together.”

People have been bitching about cupcake games on the schedule, now there will be only 2. You get 5 home conference games and two warmups for a total of 7. Yea! Why have a 12 or 14 team conference and only play 8 of the teams? I would rather watch us play Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, etc than CMU, EMU or UMass every year. And do we want to play the Alabamas, LSU or USC at some neutral site? no!

Davers gonna Dave. How do you reconcile this:
"So the consequences of going to 10, when overlaid with the fact that you have to play seven home games, really puts Gene (Smith, OSU AD) and me in a position where we won’t be traveling to play non-conference away games. I, personally, am concerned about that."
"As the conference expands, it would be unfortunate if a student-athlete came to the University of Michigan, played in the Big Ten Conference for four years and never even got to play or compete against one of the schools in the conference," U-M athletics director David Brandon said in an interview with ESPN.com. "That doesn't make a lot of sense to me."
Excuse me, but I'm going to yell. If you're concerned about both these things...THEN DON'T EXPAND THE CONFERENCE! If it doesn't make sense...THEN EXPANDING THE CONFERENCE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! If you do the money dance, there's going to be fall out. You made the bed, now lie in it.
