B1G Commish hints at 2 "big announcements" coming soon in NYC metro area
I was watching tonight's BTN preview of Penn State with Dinardo & Co. The last segment featured an interview with B1G Commissioner Delaney, in which he was asked about the status of integrating Rutgers and Maryland into the conference.
Delaney responded by saying that integration of the two new schools was going well, and concluded his remarks on Rutgers and Maryland by saying this:
"And we have a couple of interesting announcements over the next couple weeks on some other big events in the metropolitan area, not quite ready to disclose, but to tease a little bit."
Do any of you have ideas what this could mean? Based on the context (immediately after discussing the B1G's two new teams), I immediately thought he was hinting at expansion of the conference by adding two more schools in the "metropolitan" (New York I suppose) area. But could he be referring to some announcements regarding bowl games in the New York metro area? "His" and "hers" mascots with Brooklyn accents?
Someone please offer a suitable internet conspiracy theory. My creative juices are running low.

Probably television deals in those markets
August 15th, 2013 at 12:18 AM ^
That would make sense and would be in line with earlier reports of negotiations to get BTN on "basic cable plus," or whatever you call the tier just above basic cable, in the NYC area. And it would be a timely announcement since football season (and therefore football TV viewing) is about to begin.
Nice one.
Not nearly conspiratorial enough though.

Hofstra and Utica College?
August 15th, 2013 at 10:31 AM ^
I know that was sarcasm but as a current Hofstra student, HAHAHAHA. This school cares so little about sports that they cut the football program a few years back. And our basketball team got it's 5 of its players arrested last year at once and was giving 3 walk-ons significant minutes because of it. I guess it would make us competitive against Maryland though...

There aren't any schools in New Jersey or Maryland that should have been enticing for the Big Ten, either.

1. TV rights and featured games.
2. Games. Has the Pin Stripe Bowl that was being rumored been announced? Perhaps neutral site games held out there? Tournaments (B1G tourney, early-season tie in tourney, B1G-ACC challenge location) at Madison Square Garden? More games featured at Madison Square Garden, whether non-conference or something else? Doing things to infuse the general B1G excitement like they do in Indianapolis and to a lesser degree (and probably closer to what would happen in New York) in Chicago?
3. New York office as a branch of the Chicago office, giving the East Coast a little more "say", whether that's real or imagined.
Those are my guesses.

Michigan is playing a game on 9/2/2017 against Texas at Citi Field.
Michigan alum, Fred Wilpon, is the owner of the Mets, who play at Citi Field.

My buddy is a teacher and a HS coach... it's actually a K-12 school, and the tuition is 38k a year. Many parents pay this starting from Kindergarten.....!!!!!!!
EDIT: This is an nyc HS i'm talking about. I went to a jesuit HS in the city and tuition is now over 14k a year. Yikes. My girlfriend went to Georgia Tech and spent less a year for a top college!

However they have a unique color scheme for the B1G. (My wife went to Geneseo. They supposedly don't have a football team.)

Interesting. Indiana also has a unique color scheme (the Crimson part anyway...or is it the Cream?) and the supposedly DO have a football team. Supposedly.

The Senator Mccain Bill for "A Le Carte" cable would make the TV deal moot correct? Or is this a money grab while they can get it.
Also over at 11w, they have a thread every now and again about "Conference Expansion", the last round of tin foil hatness was Texas/Oklahoma (AAU/CIC/Nebraska was brought up and discussed).

Not much more than speculation in this piece, but a few weeks ago, NJ.com did talk a little about Jim Delany and potential plans for the NYC market. (LINK). Here's the core of the guesswork that was done in this particular article:
"That means, as he told The Star-Ledger Thursday, that "everything is on the table" — even the Big Ten football kickoff, an annual event that attracts thousands of fans at $100 a pop for a luncheon and autograph session with coaches and players. That one has a long history here and won’t move any time soon. But the Big Ten basketball tip-off? The postseason hoops tournament? All of that could be coming to a hotel ballroom or an arena in the New York area, sooner than later, because Delany wants to conquer the media capital of the world."

His use of the word "events" may rule out:
(1) new teams (also agree that the rumor mill would have leaked this already)
(2) a cable deal (maybe add BTN to basic plus? please?)
I really wish it was #2 given how hard it is to catch all the U of M games in the NYC area. I just don't see that happening especially with Time Warner's position on negotiating rates (they dropped CBS!!). Can't see TW buying into the benefit of paying for BTN on basic plus - especially since they were willing to drop MSG network a year or two ago. If MSG wasn't worth the cost / benefit... tough sell on BTN.
So my guess is some more events along the lines of UM hoops vs. WVU. Maybe a multi-game bball series over a weekend with a few B1G teams at Barclays or MSG.
