Minny only up 5 at half. Helps us if they hang on.
B1G Bubble Watch / Minny-PSU/ Other Tourneys Open Thread
Minnesota and Penn State are a combined 4-18 from three point land, so this in combination with the other games in the BTT so far make this possibly the day that no outside effs were given in the Big Ten. Stats? Eh, Penn State is shooting at a mind-boggling 33.87% effecitve FG percentage, which is much less impressive than Minnesota's "meh" 46.00% effective FG percentage.
This might be a dumb question, but is "last four byes" a better position than "last four in"
Yes, last 4 in are the 4 at-large teams playing in the 2 play-in games in Dayton while last four byes means they have a regular tourney.
That makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation.
A win would at least keep them there while a loss would put them out and keep them out. We all know how much those wins mean in our march to the 1 seed.
I think if Minnesota wins, then they would be in the tourney, FOR NOW. Arkansas lost and so did California. Dayton and Saint Joe's are playing tommorow and that could be an elmination game. So a win would put them in for now, and 2 wins would make them a lock.
Also, Iowa's RPI is at 46 so we need them to win today as well.
Minny is freaking killing me here - they are falling apart.
Doug McDermott has 27 alone for Creighton. Not a team any Michigan fan wants to see in their side of the the bracket.
I agree. The guy is 7-9 on 3s in the first half. We don't have anyone who could check him defensively.
I would love to play Creighton or Wichita state, Beilein would find a way to expose the fact they overall neither team has much talent. I'm not saying those would be easy games, but I'd take them over the likes of Kansas, Duke, Syracuse or any other of those programs in the 2-3 seed range.
I'm getting the feeling that teams are struggling with the 3 point line in Indy. Hopefully our team doesn't share that problem or playing Illinois could get a lot harder.
What she said.
This game is picking up a bit, but man has it been ugly.
If Northwestern manages to Northwestern ball Iowa, yikes.
It's been one offensive abomination after another - not a stirring advertisement for the conference.
I blame that misshapen mess at halfcourt.
This game is boring the hell out of Tirico and Dakich. I'm pretty sure Dakich is three beers deep already. He was just talking about how Richard Pitino leads with his face. Tirico: What else would he lead with?
Thumbs up from me. Although I have to say that I understood what Dakich was saying.
Come on, Minny. Ugh.
Austin Hollins is everything for this team.
Hollins D was key on Newbill being denied at the rim.
WTF Minny. Make a free throw. Just one. They just got bailed out by a pretty awful lane violation call.
This is hard to watch out of Minny - and PSU is getting screwed, tbh.
I don't get it. Minnesota has been unable to score. They get a 3 on 1 and pull it out to run off a few more seconds in a one possession game. I would rather push it to two possessions than take another ten seconds off the clock or risk a turnover given how their offense has been doing.
I thought that was questionable out of them, as well. That was the possession that they got the 3 on, though, right?
I mean it worked out in the end, but I feel like at the time it was not a great decision.
That one PSU fan was looking very strangely at his friend. That was bizarre. And the camera wouldn't cut away, lol.
I don't root for Penn State as a rule of thumb, but they got done dirty here.
Wonder what the odds are on Chambers accosting someone in the tunnel. He is hot, and deservedly so.
big win for us- Minn probably can't go below 50 in RPI no right? If they beat Wisc tomorrow- oh man that's big.
Pretty sure that's correct. That didn't come easy, but it's good for us.
Now we need to take care of our business.
They just asked RP how Minny dealt with the pressure. Yikes, not well. Not well at all. That was a mess.
Pretty questionable foul call against Cincy IMO. Looked like a no call. And now I feel bad for the Cincy player because Cronin is going Brian Kelly on him.
I love when a player gets away with a Denzel Valentine Memorial Full On Chicken Wing and the announcer says he "may have gotten away with an offensive foul." Uh, yeah.
UCFs jerseys are terrible
It seems like the rim on that one end has been particularly unforgiving.
Marble is ill on the break. This team has crumbled, but he's really terrific in transition.
I remember when some people were pissed off that we had Beilein as our coach instead of Steve Lavin. I told those people they were really dumb. Take that, those people.
No one is really talking about Iowa as a bubble team, but what if they lose tonight? They're currently 19-11 and 9-9 in league play - does that make them a lock?
If they lose it'll be 1-6 heading to selection Sunday. Not a good position to be in. I'd take Illinois before them if I were on the committee.
and MSU? (school importance trumps proper gramatical form).
Man, they've gone in the crapper. What could save them is playing NW and then MSU (who is in the healthy crapper).
Everyone keeps insisting they are solidly in. I think what helps them are some valuable wins. This also truly is a soft bubble which got even softer with teams like Arkansas blowing it all and bubble teams like Cal not getting the wins they needed.
If they lose, it is hard to believe they shouldn't be sweating, but there are a number of factors in their favor.
This has been mind-numbingly atrocious basketball in all four games, and the favorites have played like complete dogshit.
I hope we can break that trend and in a big way tomorrow.
That kid is bailing Iowa out. They looked completely flummoxed before he hit that run of threes.
with two of the "last four in' losing today and their win.
Adam Woodbury acts like the ref just insulted his mother every time he's called for a foul. It's not a very endearing quality.
Yeah, but no one gives better horrible reactions than Elliason from Minnesota. That kid is hilarious and definitely isn't doing himself any favors.
Man, the way Dakich and everyone goes on and on and on about what Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State should be or could be, the blue balls on these Big Ten announcers must be ridiculous.
You know, maybe this just is what these teams are.
Holy crap, that was an amazing end to that half.
If Northwestern can pull this W out, I expect Frans head to explode.
Man...wish Iowa was our side of the bracket instead of Neb
We beat Nebraska by 30
Normally I root for the underdog (as most of us do) but I have to keep reminding myself that Iowa winning is the best for Michigan, both for a better chance to beat MSU and for staying in the top-50 of the RPI.
The Hawkeyes don't seem to be getting my memo.
Rather have iowa win this game so state doesn't have a cakewalk to the semifinals.
I don't think they'd put up much resistance to anyone.
On the flip side, MSU hasn't been playing very well either.
It would be the battle of the sinking ships.
The way Iowa is playing right now, I think it's going to be a cakewalk either way. Then again, you never know.
In a five second sequence Mike Gesell shoved Drew Crawford in the stomach twice while attempting to drive into the lane. Both were obvious offensive fouls.
Iowa sucks. Hard.
LOL. Did Dakich just hit the commercial break with a low, groaning "FLOP"? That was fantastic.
For a bad team, Northwestern is pretty good at controlling the pace. Iowa is averaging like 83 ppg and you'd never know it.
Damn, you don't usually see a team collapse like Iowa absent one guy on the team fucking another guy on the team's girl.
This is rough.
Iowa needs to roll up into the NIT. They're awful and the last month has been brutal to watch anything to do with them.
Seems reasonable. I am really sick of hearing about what this team can be. They are what they are, and they suck.
They really remind me of our Amaker teams, especially 2006 and 2007. We thought we were in for sure but kept choking down the stretch and suddenly we were on the outside looking in.
I think the collapse is similar, but I don't know about the teams. The Amaker teams never rose as high as this Iowa team did, and always were short a few pieces, even if they had a few decent ones. But the collapse is definitely reminiscent - although this one involved losing to substantially more overmatched teams, I would think.
I wonder if Fran's intensity has cracked this team.
Devyn Marble's the one Iowa guy who hasn't folded up shop these last few weeks. I feel bad for him.
Definitely. I think he's had a single bad game in this whole stretch.
Olesani has been a total beast as well. He doesn't have a ton of points to show for it but he has been a monster on the offensive boards. Woodbury is useless by comparison.
EDIT: My bad, thought you said during just this game. Yeah, Marble is the only guy to be consistent for them all season.
Disgusting. I can't fucking believe Staee gets to face NW.
I can't really recall seeing a team fold like Iowa.
Yeah, it's infuriating. Turns out the 1 seed has the toughest path to the championship. Bullcrap.
I am legitimately infuriated.
Oh well. Just like the past two months, msu will beat someone, think they've turned the corner, and then get slammed back to reality during the weekend. That's been the Sparty special since January.
Maybe if Indiana had won the noon game. But probably not. We annihilated two of the three teams we can play before the championship, and solidly beat the third on the road in a single play.
We don't have to play msu or Wisconsin until the finals, I'm not sure how our road is the toughest.
Good lord Iowa
Izzo's magic again!!! Higher seeds choking the game away before he has to play them. That's the true izzo luck.
Iowa. I just don't get it. I live here and I've no idea what the hell has happened to them.
I think Fran's intensity may have been too much for this team. They have been playing so tight.
Iowa Scout board meltdown commencing. Should be good entertainment.
I will say in fairness that Northwestern has won this game more than Iowa has lost it. NW put together several clutch possessions in a row and has been making its FTs.
NW has been nails. Even Sobelewski has hit shots tonight.
You just know there's no way for them to do it two nights in a row.
Yep. Tomorrow they probably shoot 30% and lose by a score of like 67-42.
Wow. It's over. I can't even imagine being an Iowa fan right now.
Marble deserved so much better than this.
I said the other night I would be scared to play them first round of the tourney. Not so sure about that now.
McCabe is the embodiment of the disaster. That guy tries to play so outside of his talent and it's a trainwreck.
Iowa just Amakered all over the floor. My God, do you people know how much more athletic you are than Northwestern? DO YOU KNOW?
I'm going to answer my own question. So much more athletic that you beat Northwestern by 26 this season. Both times you played them.
I can't decide if McCaffrey sucks, the leadership sucked, or what.
I don't know about McCaffery. He seems like a hothead who struggles to keep his own emotions in check, so how can he provide steady leadership for his players?
That's what I was saying above - it doesn't seem crazy to think that McCaffrey's intensity got to this team. They looked like they were not enjoying playing at all. Something went very wrong with that team.
Eh. I don't think being emotional and providing leadership are mutual notions. I've gotta think the players in a way respect some of the times he goes ape, I mean, he was sticking up for them. I do see your point and there may be merit to it, I'm just not ready to believe that yet.
Plenty of coaches who freak the fuck out often are/have been known as "good leaders'. Izzo, Pitino, Knight, Boeheim, and I'd add McCaffrey, as his track record suggests so (one doesn't get Sienna a few plays from the Sweet 16, multiple times, without being a leader).
True, but then again, those other coaches seem better able to "turn off" the emotion and go back to the huddle calmly. McCaffery seems to not know when to stop goading the refs and gets T'd up way more than anyone else in the conference.
I don't actually know if I can handle reading their scout board. Yeah, I probably can. Still, I have no hate for that team and this has been kind of sickening to watch.
19-12 against D1 teams
5-9 against RPI top-50
6-11 against RPI top-100
3-7 last 10 games
lost 6 of last 7
Seems iffy at best. Even if they get in, they are going to be a terrible seed now.
EDIT: Their RPI is now 54. WarrenNolan.com RPI hadn't updated yet when I posted that.
Prior to the collapse, Iowa was 19-6 with wins @OSU and at home versus Mich, and had only suffered losses to KenPom Top 26 teams. In fact, prior to the game tonight, Iowa was still ranked 20th by KenPom
Those six losses
They don't belong in the dance. More impressed with Illinois
Fuck it, I gotta admit I'm shook. This free fall, I can't even imagine what that lockerroom must be like.
Marquette makes a layup to pull within 67-65 with two seconds left. After a Xavier timeout, Xavier successfully inbounds the ball and Marquette fouls with 0.9 seconds left. In the double bonus, the Xavier free-throw shooter makes the first to put Marquette up three.
OK, it's looking bleak, but if you're Marquette, I think you should look for a way to maximizze the time. Next, Xavier makes the mistake of leaving it's rebounders in the lane. But Marquette doesn't notice. The Xavier free-throw shooter misses the second free throw, the Marquette player grabs the rebound with a Xavier player standing next to him, a tries to muster an arms-only full court shot that comes up about 15 feet short.
IMO, in those situations, your best bet on offense is to stop the clock and move the ball upcourt via the inbounds pass. Otherwise, you're conceding. But Marquette did not have any timeouts left. What to do?
Well, if I were the Marquette rebounder, I would have attempted to grab the rebound and bounce the ball off the Xavier player next to me so that it would have richocheted out of bounds. If that could have been done in 0.5 seconds or left, there would have been time for a full length pass and a catch and shoot three.
I know it's not likely, but it's a pet peeve of mine when teams piss away the clock at the end without thinking about how they could play with the clock stopped to give themselves a fighting chance.
