B1G bowl ties for 2014 season?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Does anyone have a definitive answer to what the B1G bowl tie-ins are this year?

They have changed drastically. Affiliations that rotate yearly with new slotting as well.

The only thing I think I know is that if the B1G Champion isn't in the playoff, they WON'T go to the Rose Bowl.

I think as long as the Big Ten champion isn't an upset (and by upset, I mean someone from the West wins) then I bet we'll go to the p-off.  MSU and OSU have cred, so if it's one of them, they'll go, and if Michigan (or someone else) comes out of that division over MSU and OSU, then that will be enough to go.

as opposed to a set order (Citrus 2nd choice, Outback 3rd choice, et cetera).  The Bowls will be in three tiers and the conference/Bowls will work together on best placement.

The tiers (in 2014):

1.  Champion automatically to the Playoffs or "New BCS" Bowl (rotation of Peach/Cotton/Rose/Fiesta/Orange/Sugar).

2.  Potential for at-large teams to the above games.

3.  3 teams placed among the Citrus, Outback and Holiday.

4.  3 teams placed among the (Gator/Music City)*, San Francisco and Pinstripe.

5.  2 teams among the Detroit and Heart of Dallas

6.  Any left over B1G teams can fill left-over open spots.

* - The B1G and ACC will work together -- a team from one conference goes to the Gator, a team from the other conference to the Music City.  If a B1G team goes to the Gator in 2014, the B1G team will automatically go to the Music City in 2015 (and vice versa).

I do like the tiered system actually, mainly because Florida being more or less the Big Ten's destination of choice outside of the Rose Bowl for quite a long time was becoming a bit mundane, in my opinion. To have teams that could rotate through several places over the course of years - something not really possible in the straight ranking, especially if you consistently finished in or near certain spots - seems like it could be a bit more entertaining.

It was bad.  And it was bad before we contracted w/ the Tangerine (Russell Athletic) Bowl for a few years --- two bowl games in one city!  From 2004-2009, Wisconsin went to Florida 6 straight years and went to Orlando 4 years out of 5!

I know the B1G's new contract with the Holiday Bowl says no individual school can go there more than twice in 6 years.  That's a good provision.

If Florida State, Oklahoma, Alabama, Stanford/Oregon, and Ohio State are undefeated, I'd bet the B1G gets left out. Even if there are a couple undefeated teams and a few one-loss teams and the B1G champ is one of the 1-loss teams, we're out.

The only way the B1G makes the playoff is if our champ is undefeated and someone else's champ has a loss, unless it's the SEC then all bets are off.

I can recall just a few years ago that I said an undefeated Big X team - guess it was longer than just a few years because I referred to it as the X - would never be left out of the then current BCS two team NC game. My how times have changed. I do think USC will rise again to power in the west although I think that league possesses more chances for in conference upsets than any other just due to certain teams presenting far more difficult matchup problems for the Big Boys, respectively, than even the SEC.

I was ready to put OU behind OSU before I gave it a moment's thought and realized the Big 12, formerly 8, has been playing better ball than us in the recent past. The only thing we can do to rectify this situation is return to the mid-90s where the BIG was recognized as the best conference in the nation.  This was the result of an influx of new coaching that turned previously moribund programs around and a win was really a win.

Inasmuch as the BIG includes four of the top ten programs in cfb with most wins, the tradition is obviously there to establish a new cycle with us getting equal billing. The only way to do it though is the same way UM must reestablish itself as a probable loss for most opponents; simply beat your opponents on the field thereby putting an end to subjective, arbitrary possibilities.
