B-ball schedule --- the good and bad

Looking at the entire schedule, UM plays some pretty good teams in KU, Syracuse, Clemson, Utah and G.T. or UTEP.

Edit (credit to loyalblue15):  In the Big 10 they only play Purdue  and Illinois once.

They also have an interesting game against Harvard (remember last time Coach Amaker played his former team?)

But they also play Bryant (never heard of them), South Carolina Upstate (WTF!) and Concordia, MI  (seriously?)

Anyone know if those three schools are Div. 1  (I'm sure Concordia is not), but I have not heard of the other two.  (Although I'm sure not getting credit for those wins will matter much come March)  I'm also wondering if S.C. Upstate is an exhibition game but Rothstein didn't denote it as such.

South Carolina Upstate - is that a deep south translation of Northern South Carolina?

I hope we beat the sh*t out of Amaker.  F*** him.

That being said I have much lower expectations for the team this year.... just about as low as they've been since I can remember.  If we win 15 games that will be good, IMO.

are lower than 4/6 of Amaker's win totals while at Michigan? (11,17,23,13,22,22)

Amaker averaged 18 wins a year here. Why the animosity? He brought us past the sanctions. Sure we had to move on to reach the next level, but he did well here

The hate for Amaker on here.  The guy was/is a decent coach.  He brought us w/in a game of the tourney a couple times.  Everyone loves Beilein b/c of the tourney win, you could argue Amaker would have had the same accomplishment if the bubble shook out a little differently one of those years.  And Amaker's worst seasons weren't close to what Beilein's worst are.  I just don't see why everyone loves Beilein and hates Amaker.  How about some consistency?

No one "hates" Amaker on here. He just wasn't a very good coach. He played extremely weak non-conference schedules, the weakest Big Ten in recent memory, and got to beat up on 1-2 NIT cupcakes in those 20 win seasons.  There is no excuse for a team with Horton, Abrams, SIms(NTS), and Harrs(NTH) to not make the tournament.

problem with amaker while he was at michigan is that he didn't coach his players up... not one player he had a michigan got any better with exception of horton... but even with horton, who was a 5* coming out of high school went undrafted and then got cut from the miami heat... did d. harris, c. sims, hunter, petway, or ronald colman get any better while they were at michigan??? these were all decent recruits that didn't do anything special...

Hunter is the only one to have played in the NBA - and that was last season, under Don Nelson, after getting promoted from the D-League.

Tommy Amaker's teams were like a hot girl you would have in your class - only she was either:

A) A total prude, or

B) "Diseased" (the sexually transmitted kind)

but I think the schedules they played were better than you remember.  Here are highlights from each season:

01-02: Duke, BC

02-03: VT, KSU, Duke, Vandy, UCLA

03-04: Butler, NCstate, Vandy, UCLA

04-05: Colorado, Zona, Providence, GT, ND, UCLA

05-06: Butler, Miami (FLA), ND, UCLA, Miami (OH) (they were pretty solid that year)

06-07: NCstate, UCLA, Georgetown, Davidson (they were 26-4 that year)

I'm not saying those are the greatest non-conference schedules ever, but they aren't that different from what we're playing now.  And your point about underacheiving with the talent he had, you're diminishing his records b/c he could recruit well? Are you of the opinion that Beilein's success has been more impressive b/c he doesn't have the same talent on the team?

My point here is that Amaker doesn't get the credit he deserves.  I don't think he is that much worse of a coach than Beilein.  I also think that when its all said and done, his overall record during his tenure won't be that much worse than Beilein's record.

Well yes I'm diminishing his records because they weren't that good compared to the talent level he had.  Think of Ron Zook for example.  If Bill Lynch had those same records at IU as Zook did at UF, he would be a hero on their campus.  Beilein has already accomplished more with a less talented team than Amaker's best group. Now in the next couple years, JB's talent level should about equal Amaker's teams and then we will be able to more accurately judge.

the home game versus state is on spring break, i love michigan basketball and l go to all the games (even the god awful matchups) and we get repaid by having the best game of the year occur when we arent on campus

we also lose 2 more conference games to xmas break

awful news

The Big Ten seems to have a hard on for putting important home games during breaks.

Two years ago, Wisconsin and Illinois were during winter break and then Purdue was during spring break. Then last year we had Ohio State during winter break and Minnesota during spring break. Now this year we miss out on two games during the winter and MSU as well? Freaking stupid.

that's gunna be a long trip... My synod (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) owns that system (CU-Ann Arbor, River Forest, and the other one... I can't remember where it is though).

As far as your upstate question: I live in what is known as the "Upstate" region. I'm assuming you used  "deep south" sarcastically, but if you wanted to get technical, the old term is "Upcountry".

The school is located in Spartanburg (Same city Conelius Jones played H.S. football in). Yes, it is literally the "upper" part of SC.
