Aziz Shittu Withdraws Commitment to Stanford

Following up on Tom VH's post from yesterday, ESPN and Rivals are reporting that Aziz Shittu has withdrawn his commitment to Stanford and is opening up his recruting again.   It certainly seemed to be moving in that direction in Tom VH's post and it's official now.

They have a lot going for them in terms of recruiting.  For one, if you have ever been out to Palo Alto, it is freeking beautiful out there.  No Michigan winters to contend with.  Also, they have been very up and coming over the past two years, and just capped an amazing season.  Second also, there are a bunch of recruits who really do look for academics - for those kids, there are only a few schools that really offer top-flight football and academics - ND, us and Stanford are the only three that come to mind (although I am sure there are a few others).  Of those schools, how many also have beautiful weather and are located on the west coast?  Obviously, the academic standards make it difficult for them to recruit some kids, but they do have a bunch of nice selling points.

Definitely a middle-eastern name, but there's a good chance it's Islamic-African. Many names we consider to belong mostly to African Americans are actually Islamic, of which there are many members in Africa. Kareem, Jamal, etc. are examples of this.

Anyways, my useless commentary aside, I believe Shittu becomes our highest rated target at this point, so I am extremely excited about this and hope Mattison can work his magic.

I can appreciate the occasional play on words with certain athletes awesome names.  I'm sure with his size, he didn't take a lot of teasing in school, but I worry that a guy like Aziz could get tired of the fact that every time his name is mentioned, people are constantly making comparisons to fecal matter.  I haven't checked blog pages of the other schools that are recruiting him and I'm honestly not trying to be a Debbie Downer but this play on his name could get old and lead him in other directions.  Once is humorous but seeing the same things being said every time his name is mentioned...I mean, come on?!

This is good to hear but he's going to be a hard pull. If Hoke/Mattison can get him however, this Defensive haul is going to be legendary!

Is Hoke and coach Mattison aware of the strong Arabic community in the greater Detroit area? If this is important to him, it could be a benificial recruiting tool.

We need defensive tackles.  And not just any defensive tackles, but ones who can play early.  Carr and Rodriguez did a decent job of getting "high-end talent" (Martin, Campbell, Ash), but they forgot about that whole "depth" thing.  And Rodriguez f***ed it up even more by running a 3-3-5 and telling any defensive tackle that they would have to take on double-teams as a NT for the next four years.  And the recruiting pitch of "Oh yeah, plus you'll be playing on a crappy defense" must not have helped, either.

in this recruiting class going forward, IMO. Otherwise it doesn't matter how great our scheme is, other teams will just run right at us all day.

I'm slightly more concerned about OT, but it might be a photo finish...
