Awful Announcing Shows Proof Te'o Talked About Girlfriend After "Learning" of Hoax
Date . Get Heismans.
can we label these Manti threads OTe' just to warn people?
ESPN may well have been sitting on that until his interview. It's obvious the interview was canceled because there are questions he's going to have a hard time answering.
Shit. I started typing then watching the bball game before I came back to finish.
If true I'd have a lot more respect for ESPN. I've been wondering why this Heisman interview hasn't been getting more play since Awful Announcing dug it up. Seems pretty damning.
Probably decided to let this fly after he said he would do an interview with ESPN and then cancelled.
It wasn't ESPN that pointed out the above interview -- it was Awful Announcing.
My bad. Didn't catch that part.
I'd probably hold out on releasing that clip until I knew for sure Te'o wasn't rescheduling. This probably ends any chance of that. Maybe Oprah will get him now.
The hilarious (stupid) thing about how he's handled this is if he had come out and sincerely apologized for either:
1. Orchestrating It
2. Embellishing to a ridiculous extent and feeding the media's fawning over it.
(because there are no other explanations for his behavior), the news would have been forgotten much more quickly. The longer he delays and denies, the bigger the media circus becomes. Whoever is advising him should be fired.
And he should hire M. Night Shyamalan. It's going to take some seriously twisted story telling to patch these holes.
That's not true. It happened about 5 minutes into the movie.
Now you've ruined it for everyone!
Luckily for M. Night Shyamalamadingdong, he has a bunch of other awesome movies people can go see instead.
I was planning to see that movie for the first time this weekend. Thanks a lot you douche.
hoax regardless of who started it. At the biggest moments, he reveled in the attention.
And ESPN again aired a false story with no journalism standard to verify.
They were collecting money for cancer research in her name in Miami and Teo mentioned her while addressing ND fans. This story is full of so many holes it could compete with a red light district.
Do you have a link for that? Not doubting you (as if anybody could doubt anything about this story at this point); I'd just be really curious to read a report.
I don't listen to much sports talk radio but I tuned into a few today. Don't remember who the host was but he was at the game and mentioned it.
Heard the same thing this morning from an ND fan there.
Don't worry, Manti was going to release that on Monday too. I pinky swear...
Jornalism is printing what others dont want printed. Otherwise its public relations.

Funny thing is, it wasn't even Orwell.
Tell me more about this "jornalism" you speak of...
-Michael Scott" -Wayne Gretzkey
Several websites of unverified voracity attribute the similar quote "News is something somebody doesn't want printed; all else is advertising." to William Randolph Hearst. >
Espn was running a quote from a teammate during the BB game that was pretty damning.
It took me a minute to realize that "Awful Announcing" was a blog and not a description. The latter made just as much sense.
What a sad little man.
Actually a terrifying and large man. Sad nonetheless.
I really think it's gonna come out that dude is gay. The girlfriend thing was a cover and now his cover is blown. I may be wrong but that would at least explain why this all happened.
if he wants to play in NFL, he wont come clean about his sexuality
If Ray Lewis or Jake Long or Drew Brees or whoever announced tomorrow that he just loves having sex with guys, do you think anyone would give a shit?
I think the whole "hostile culture" thing is way overblown. Straight guys make fun of other straight guys in ways that question their masculinity. That can involve stating/implying that they are homosexuals or referring to them as women's body parts or just using a lady's name when addressing them. It doesn't really have anything to do with their actual sexual orientation, except for complete psychos.
For example, if your buddy ordered a Cosmo at the bar and you questioned his sexuality and he responded by saying, "Actually, yes, I'm totally into dudes and hope to one day marry a handsome gentleman," most people wouldn't turn that into an altercation. You would just have to think up a new, more creative way to bust your buddy's balls.
most people wouldn't turn that into an altercation.
Out of curiosity, where do you live, approximately? I can think of an awful lot of places where this wouldn't be the case, and it might even be a stretch to say "most people" wouldn't behave this way.
While I think you're right about that being an issue for a large number of people, one of the best ways to not make that an issue any more is to have prominent athletes coming out.
That's all nice and dandy but the reality is, there is not a single out athlete in the NFL (or the NBA, or the NHL or the MLB.) A few come out after retirement but never, EVER during. I'm pretty sure there is a reason for this, otherwise this wouldn't be such a never ending issue.
Coming out before playing a single down in the NFL? That would be a first. I can't even comprehed of such a thing.
50+ years ago there were no black athletes in those leagues. More recently, Liberace and Paul Lynde just hadn't found the right girl yet, because you couldn't be on TV if you were "like that".
I'm not saying it would be easy for the first guy (though I imagine it would spur others), but we all know there are a certain number of people in the world who are gay. Knowing those odds/statistics, there are somewhere between dozens and hundreds of current pro/college, male athletes who are gay. If they all just said, "Yup, I like guys, no big deal" the hysteria would completely go away, IMHO.
From personal experience (and to respond to the farther up post, I've lived everywhere from Texas/Virginia to SoCal/Ann Arbor), a good friend of mine was in a fraternity where the guy they elected president turned out to be gay and he was afraid to admit it and only came out to his closer friends in the house near the end of college. Despite his worries, none of the hard partying, skirt chasing dudes who would call you a f** for not being willing to drink until you shit your pants actually gave a shit. I had a buddy in high school who we played football with who came out in his mid/late twenties. We were only creeped out because he never told anybody and all the times he wanted to watch porn with a group of other 16 year old dudes now seemed weird as fuck in retrospect.
I think a lot of casual trash talking among dudes who assume whoever they are talking to is straight intimidates folks from just being willing to admit who they are. The overwhelming majority of folks would not have a problem with a successful gay athlete. If he sucked, they would probably utter plenty of homophobic slurs, but that happens anyway for players who are ostensibly straight (SEE Artie Lange shouting "GayRod" at Alex Rodriguez). If a guy like Te'o, or just a handful of the current athletes who are gay (and yes, there are probably quite a few) came out, this isn't an issue any more. And if psychos who have a problem with it want to watch ladies figure skating to avoid supporting the "homos" in the NFL, more power to them.
its the NFL...predominantly populated by young poor black males. Not a collection known for tollerance of homosexuality. Furthermore, I would be suprised if an NFL owner would use a high draft pick to find out how putting a gay male (which there are none at this point) in an NFL lockerroom would work.
BUT...another traditionally homophobic group, the military, is expanding its acceptance of gays in a successfull, yet slow way
Do you really think NOTRE DAME of all places would be okay with Te'o hypothetically coming out?
At least media-wise. But we're talking locker rooms, not high society. And some of the most "manly" venues out there. It's a different atmosphere. It may not be right, but I can understand the fear of being accepted in it.
Take a look here - a blog about a team of truly higher education (and a pretty liberal school) and if anyone says they like musicals you get all sorts of gay undercurrent jokes and attacks. And I'd like to think the level of discourse here is higher than the average sports blog, or definitely, NFL locker room. (Would you want to be the gay player in the same locker room as Tebow?)
And seeing how we've had threads on here illustrating how NFL fans in stadiums are basically drunken cavemen, I'm not sure they'd be shouting the nicest things at him either.
I'm sure the media would be fully behind it, and we're headed towards a day where that first guy does it and everyone realizes "hey, was this that big a deal?" But much like Jackie Robinson, for that first guy, it's going to suck.
I have seen the date he "learned" of the hoax as being Dec. 6th and Dec. 26th. That's kind of an important difference in placing this item into context. Which of the dates is accurate, or at least the official company line?
Supposedly Manti was called by the dead girlfriend at the ESPN award show on the 6th. He then informed the administration on the 26th.
should be negotiating a book deal, to be announced after the NFL draft.
ND teammates are now throwing Te'o under the bus. I can't even keep up with this story.
I wonder how crowded it is under that bus?
Is Ditka driving the bus?
To add to the discussion of timelines a little bit, NBC News actually had its own take on some of the other timeline issues - (LINK)
Essentially, in addition to the questions regarding why Te'o would remain quiet for weeks after discovering the supposed hoax, they discuss the conflicting profiles of Te'o and this girlfriend with regards to the car accident, which ranged fron late 2011 to this past April, as well as varied accounts of when precisely she died, as most interviews pegged it at September 12th, within hours of his grandmother's death, or even days after. They do ask the right question in that surely these things would stick out in his mind when it came to time and date.
In a Sports Illustrated interview from September, he claims to have known her for almost four years. C'mon, man.
Are they claiming he's a pathological liar or what. Do u have a link to those players comments.
(anonymous) players are basically saying the team knew Te'o had never met the girl. They thought it was improper for Te'o to claim she was actually his girlfriend, but he loved the media attention so much that he ran with it. Sort of paints Te'o out to be an attention-whore, which, if true, would explain a lot about the story.
Having an inside whitness seals the deal,in my mind. Playing the "victim" card though boggles me. I wonder how much of his NFL signing money will go to whoever that girl was portrayed to be Lennay, she truly was the victim.
The goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain!
Nothing is fucked here, Dude.
The guy gets enough attention anyway as a great ND LB. There has to be some wierd/odd reason he did this.i could come up with a list, but I can't wait until he admits the real motivation behind it. It will come out eventually.
He meta catfished himself
Worst thing is he can't even turn to alcohol. Poor, poor man... alone with his thoughts and not a bottle nor a bitch to be had.
Backpacks and Bicycles.
Best. Post. Ever.
Shut this shit down, guys.
Sports radio guys, cowher, Patrick, and their guests like mortensen try to figure this out. Just listening to them I get the sense that they would give money to a Nigerian prince.
I hope South Park makes an episode about Te'o when it comes back in March!
I choked on my ham sandwich when I read the scissor lift part. Talk about instant karma
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I wonder if they will though.... In March will the story still be current? They're usually pretty damn fresh with their shows in recent seasons.... like making the episode about something that happened that week or the week before.
I bet what they'll do is a general Catfish-inspired episode and incorporate Te'o.
Manti te'o not actually Hawaiian. In fact he would just fly to Hawaii to meet with recruiters. The whole reason for this is that he just wanted to be able to wear those stupid necklace things. He also faked being Mormon, in fact he believes in the Norman (Peterson) faith. Cheers boys and FUCK ND!
had me confused until you wrote "Fuck ND", to slam it home*.
(*What Lennay never ever said to Te'o)
This is pretty much his nail in the coffin. Absolutely no way Te'o survives this as the "victim" or a naive, lovesick adolescent male.
In all honesty pure silence is his best strategy, taking the "private life is private" route.
I'm truly starting to believe this charade was started and kept up to cover up a homosexual relationship.
