Nike wasn't even called Nike in 1972. I dunno when they signed U-M, but it was much later. It is true, however, that 1972 was when they released their first line of Nike shoes (the company itself didn't change its name to Nike until 1978), so I suppose it's possible the 72 is a reference to that.

But I like the Dierdorf theory... He certainly has the prestige to get his number on them, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's friends with the Nike founders.

The university as a whole signed with Nike in 1994. Our football and basketball coaches had individual shoe (but not uniform) deals with them before that, though - I think they first signed around the mid-'80s.

Hells yes! I bought a pair back in the fall and I love them. I've only worn them a couple times because I'm pretty anal about how clean I keep my shoes, but they are definitely sweet.

Too bad I paid $70 for them...

1. I get comments from everyone when I wear them, mostly good, but either way they grab attention.
2. They have a block M under one tongue and GO BLUE under the other.
3. Same shoe as the KG and the DwightH - very comfortable.

Lives here: http://www.finishline.com/store/product/nike-mens-vandal-hi/_/A-9508?ca…

I just scooped a pair in 10.5 for this fall and the occasional pickup game. That's how I justified it to myself- "hey, dude, if you change jobs and they have a bball team, you can wear them when you play."

Yeah, it's more likely I'll just wear them here and there because they're sweet. . . and, of course, I will wear them for viewing U of M sporting events.

If you're looking for the Michigan Vandals, I know Puffer Reds in Ypsi carried them a couple weeks ago.

My Be True To Your School Michigan Dunks are the love of my life :)

Even though the title said (shoes), I was still secretly hoping that Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked someone in the face while wearing a M sweater.
