Awesome Stuff...

Hello Friends,

Without understatement, I will say it was a somewhat difficult weekend for all of us who support the program. But, what is done is done and it's time to move ahead to Iowa. On Saturday, after the unfortunate result against the 'little brother' I found myself having a few beers and looking at another blog I enjoy called 1000 Awesome Things. Check it out, it's pretty cool 1000awesomethings.com

Anyway, I got to running the same premise for Michigan Football through my mind and I was digging the concept. So here are a few examples I came up with...

  • Walking into the stadium - Every single time you walk in and the light hits you as you exit the tunnel. Awesome.
  • Denard  in the RichRod offense - It's like any play could work out and something great could happen. Awesome.
  • Capital One Bowl v. Florida 2008. Lloyd. Spread freaking offense. Redemption. St. Tim Tebow destruction. jamar. Awesome.

I could go on but I feel great about the upcoming weekend already...feel free to weigh in.

I have to completely agree

I have to completely agree with this:

Walking into the stadium - Every single time you walk in and the light hits you as you exit the tunnel. Awesome.

I visited Michigan Stadium for the first time this year and walking into the stadium as the light hits you and as the greatest stadium in college football grows beneath you, it is in a word, awesome.

Through the tunnel

I would've never had the opportunity to go through that tunnel as an intercollegiate football player, but I had the privilege of doing so with the band on Saturdays.  You can't really hear the crowd until you get right at the mouth of the tunnel because it echoes inside, but once you hit that small opening and see the crowd pan out in front of you, it's like nothing else I've ever done, or probably ever will do again.

The Tunnel

Almost 20 years later, when ever I get asked what was the most memorable/special thing about the MMB, the answer is always, always, always: The Tunnel.

Agreed, 100%

My first pregame was MSU in 2006.  One of the Spartan Drum Majors lost his footing during their backbend, just like this year.  Then MMB DM Iden came out, did his thing, and the entire stadium went absolutely berserk, just like this year.

I think I marched okay, but I don't really remember much else besides running out of the tunnel into a stadium full of Maize

First, I like this thread

Second, I'm going to go with Denard's speech after the game in which he took responsibility for the loss and said that he'd work to make sure he didn't play like that again...I love that kid.

I'm even more pumped about it

after hearing/watching Omameh's recollection of it.  The way I hear Denard giving his speech, it's not some weeping apologetic or nicety for the media.  It's him standing up and giving a 'cut that crap' to the team; the side of him we won't see or hear through his gigawatt smile.  It's intensity and focus for the team game that eclipses the fervor we have in our program as die-hards.  Denard's only going to get better as a leader, and this team has nowhere to go from here than straight downfield.

I think his 6th grade teacher must have seen the future internet debates regarding GERG, "fire RichRod", "NewCarr/LessMiles", "Sailboat Willie", "Tate to Transfer" etc. etc. etc.

Definitely not awesome.  I was there and it was more scary for both sides than anything.  It was a big hit but the aftermath was not awesome.

Yes, it was an amazing hit.  Yes, it was career ending for both.  No, it is never awesome when a player is hurt.

Dear old college days

The duties of the first person to wake up on game day include lighting the grill and playing The Victors loud enough to wake everyone else.

The smell as you walk to the stadium.

Fresh, clean Ann Arbor air +
the smell of various meats being scorched over an open flame +
the occasional cigarette/cigar smoke making you remember when you could smoke intermittently and carefree as an undergrad because you didn't have a wife who would chide you or a kid who would probably say something like "daddy's uckie" +
the smell of grass being torn up under the spinning wheels of people trying to park in a front yard.
Probably a couple smells in there I am missing.  But, add them all up and they = game day.

Game days always smell awesome.

True Awesome with a heap of awesome sauce

Sitting with my brother in the bottom corner of the Rose Bowl, January 1st, 1998 with the only play I could REALLY see the whole game being Charles Woodsen's interception when he jumped what must've been about 8.5 feet into the air right in front of me.  And then....as the game ended....watching the team come roaring off the sidelines and wade directly into our section high-fiving all of us.  The band setting up literaly just a few yards in front of our section and singing the Victors over and over and over in the night air with the thought flooding through my mind "we did it.....we actually DID it"....

Gives me chills even now as I think about it.

Having my kids with me

for every Michigan home game. The older one started 16 years ago when he was 6 months old and his younger brother when he was 3. They are completely, hopelessly indoctrinated in the lore of all things Michigan. The older one's bedroom is literally maize and blue with posters of the stadium, banners, etc. covering the walls. Handing down the passion to the next generation is the greatest gift of all. Awesome.

Mercury Hayes dragging his toe against Virginia. The Big House double wave. For me personally - walking down the tunnel, watching pregame from the sideline and then holding the banner 3 times - nothing I have ever done compares to that except maybe playing 1 and 18 at St. Andrews.

The barn was definiately rocking both times.  In 1998, I swear I thought the place would fall down around us the crowd was just so loud.  Incredible.

Thoughts

1.  That first play was crazy on at least two levels.  First, his spin move was sick.  Second, the opposing team had some of the worst tackling on that play I've ever seen - I think all 11 on defense missed him.

2.  Hart is very fast.  He's not made of dilithium (obviously) but maybe berryllium?

3.  Does Hart have to be voted in or does he become an instant member of the All-Dreads team?

The Braylon Show.  I was

The Braylon Show.

I was having dinner at a restaurant with my girlfriend (now wife)'s parents for the first time and excused myself to use the restroom.  My future father-in-law found me at the bar an hour later watching the second overtime.  He just nodded his head in understanding as Braylon tore out little brother's heart.

I have a few

Driving to Ann Arbor for a big game and seeing another Michigan fan in another car, and knowing that they're as pumped as you are, and you don't even know them. Awesome.

Catching that first glimpse of the ginormous M on the Michigan Stadium sign as you head into Ann Arbor on I94. Awesome.

BAND, TAKE THE FIELD! Awesome.

Bullwinkle. Awesome.

Watching Denard run 80 yards to score the winning TD. I'm assuming this will be AWESOME. I intend to find out this weekend.

Walking into Michigan Stadium

Walking into Michigan Stadium on Saturday, November 22, 2003 for the first time.  Awesome.

I didn't have a ticket- I watched the game on a TV in some guys van.  Awesome.

With only 3 mins. left in the game, they opened the gates and I got to rush the field.  Awesome.

My first move was to run down to the south east corner of the field and take a picture of myself with tOSU marching band in the background- many of them were in tears.  Awesome.

Michigan wins 35-21.  Awesome.

Laid on the block M at midfield while sad sack OSU players walked by.  Awesome.

Second This

I wasn't around him much, but the little I was, it made me proud that he was my coach. I would see him in West Quad checking on the players studying. For some reason I was near him in Crisler one night very late in the 1979 season ( a year in which we lost three games because we could neither kick field goals nor punt). This little kid came up to him to ask for an autograph. He said something like, "Young man, can you kick?" Cracked us up.

Rose Bowl vs Texas. He saw how much his Dad loved Michigan. Sad we lost but he became a Michigan fan for life. Priceless.

My first game

Was Wangler to Carter. I was 8. It was the most surreal moment of my life. Listening to Bob Ufer on the way home was amazing as well.

We are...

About half way through the fourth quarter of that game, me and my buddy yelling back to a half-hearted Nittany Lion crowd:

"We are..."

"NOT GOOD!"

Losing my voice

Losing my voice on Thursday nights at Yost (Goal Counts, etc).  Gaining it back the next morning only to lose it on Friday night at Cliff Keen.  Gaining it back the next morning only to lose it during the march to the stadium, along with subsequent screaming during each game.  Then not gaining it back until about Tuesday or Wednesday.
