Awesome date idea: History of the University of Michigan tour

Submitted by MGoJen on

This came up in a thread and I thought I'd post it for everyone. My senior year at Michigan, I took History 265: History of the University of Michigan with Professors Nick and Margaret Steneck who have since retired. The class included a practicum tour outlining historical spots on campus with detailed descriptions, interesting facts and things to look for.

The tour is a lot of fun (don't be deterred by the the cold Ann Arbor weather!) and perfect to fill an off-season Saturday or even a date. =)

Enjoy, and let me know if any of you guys have done this or plan to. 3

I took that class my junior year... easily one of the best classes I took while there. I absolutely loved it.

Funny story, one of my first dates with a girl (whose name happened to be Jen) was doing a large portion of that practicum tour.

How many MGoBloggers would go on said UM history tour date with MGoJen in a heartbeat solely because of her posting ability?

All of us?

Ok, that was easy.

Yea, there are a ton of cool places to take a girl in AA. It depends on the girl I guess, but I've had some really good times playing photohunt at Heidelberg and 25cent PBR night at Circus. There's also dollar hamburger day at Bar Louie, and a ton of other awesome restaurants (Totoro, No Thai, Savas, Colliders at Rod's)

It would be sweet if this was still offered as a course. Not only would I think it would be pretty easy, I'd find it really interesting to learn more about our campus. Thanks for posting this!

I think it was like one research paper on the UM history topic of your choice(I chose to analyze the portrayal of women in The Michigan Daily right after WWII broke out), a midterm and then a final. My GSI (Cheri) was awesome and we went over practice questions that inevitably would be on the exam verbatim. There were like five or six pictures of some of the sites from the practicum and we had to identify the landmark and answer a question about it.

Definitely one of my best class choices by far!

Agreed. Definitely not a breeze class though. You needed to attend classes, study the lecture notes, and keep up with the readings in order to do well on the finals. Mostly fun-facts with a sprinkle of opinion/essay. Fortunately, the material is fantastic and so pertinent because you see what you're reading about as you walk across campus everyday. A very interesting class.
