Crossing my fingers here, but my expectations aren't too high
Avery Walls deciding today!
He went there :(
Avery! Come to the blue!
Why did they decide on that time?
I don't know, but as someone pointed out in a previous thread, that's only 6:40 am in Oregon. Trying to convince myself that's a good sign.
LOL. That was me. I want Avery and I want to see Magnus poop in his pants.
to Ann Arbor leaves at 9:50!
And it's not Home Alone either. Times have changed. Got to give yourself more time to get through the airport, especially if he's starting from his high school.
I want him bad, but the timing suggests that he isn't coming
Could have been worse -- at least you didn't say he was yummy.
Haha, nice. I think it is a bit strange to say "I want him" about any teen boy. It needs to end.
that is undefeated, playing in the NC game, with a coach who's not going anywhere, versus committing to a program with a totally unsettled coaching situation, with a winning record and a bowl game spot for the first time in three years.
You are sayin' there's a chance!
But our helmets are very consistent....and have wings
This is not good news IMO that he is deciding today. Livin on hope right now.
I think the fact that TomVH and Sam Webb have no read on the guy is "very telling."
Like I said in another thread, I will poop my pants if Avery Walls chooses Michigan.
I even have a fresh pair of tighty whities with me today.
Hoping you let 'er rip today, Magnus!
It's creepy that you have ever considered my underwear selection.
Maybe its' because you are a football coach. Something about football coaches makes me personally think tighty whitey's. Just speaking for myself. Not that I have internal debates about it...or anything...
of a football coach, I always picture BIKE shorts, Polyester collared shirt, baseball hat with the white mesh in the back and wearing long socks (pulled up to the knees)....
Just in case. I'm wearing them myself - and I just did.
I'd embed the video, but can't get to it at work. Great skit.
Better put on a pair of these!
EDIT: Beat me to it, kind of.
Magnus did you jump the gun or do you know something that we don't?
I refuse to torture myself today. I refuse to get all fired up, at work no less, about some young kid choosing where he goes to school. I know it won't be UM, so this time I'm staying away. I'm not doing it, you here me? .......plays defense?, he's faster than Cool Papa Bell? ..ok, ok, ok, What time again is the announcement?
I'm guessing that these 4 and 5 star recruits are not announcing a committment to Michigan until our coaching situation is official one way or the other. So even if it's not Oregon, there are probably other schools more in play than us right now. Unless this kid is an early enrollee, you might be left hoping that this is just a verbal and we can snake oil this kid in January. Just my two cents.
4 and 5 star recruits on defense mostly haven't been announcing Michigan even during the period absent the coaching uncertainty.
This would be a great pick up, but your route is probably more likely than him picking us now.
I'm pretty sure on one site or another, these guys were 4/5 stars. What happens when they get to campus (or in some case they don't make it that far) is a different story.
2008: Brandon Smith, J.B. Fitzgerald, Mike Martin, Marcus Witherspoon, Boubacar Cissoko, Kenny Demens, Taylor Hill
2009: William Campbell, Craig Roh, Anthony LaLota, J.T. Turner, Vladimir Emilien
2010: Demar Dorsey, Jibreel Black, Josh Furman, Cullen Christian, Marvin Robinson, Richard Ash, Ken Wilkins
2011:Brennen Beyer, Kellen Jones
The only optimistic hope I have is that Oregon is to far away for his family to see him play ever...but that may be very optimistic,
Hoping for the best but prepared for the worst. I would love to see Walls in the winged helmet, but who knows if it will happen or not.
The twitter world is saying Cal.
Cal, but it will only be 6:40 AM in Cal. No one gets up that earlier out there.
On a serious note, if Cal gets him, it would be an amazing 2 days on defense. They would have pulled in 3 ESPN150 guys just on defense. Who is their DC?
Folks in Oregon must be so excited.
The Oregon folks think its Cal.
you sir, have a very different opinion than I of what Tom brings to the table at this website.
if we haven't heard from TomVH about Avery today then i don't think that is a good sign. plus his facebook page photos are him in Orgeon jersey's.
It's my birthday and this is all I want.
We all hope you get your wish...
Happy Birthday to you sir.
yes, we are just not posting it.
So its' 9:45 now. I don't even feel any anxiety. The same feeling I get before the Lions play the Pats. I hope the Lions win but I know they won't and therefore Apathy sets in.
It's not us. He hasn't contacted the coaches...
know who the coaches are!! Thanks DB
Avery is just a part of the enormous conspiracy. Against me.
Cal it is.
Cal? I mean Cal? Not Oregon. Really? What the..Sons of.. Where's the Tylenol?
I guess he could be serious about academics, early playing time, but and blue/yellow-ish jerseys... Darn.
Better cal than Oregon. Snake oil comes in january.
How in the hell is Cal pulling in these guys all of a sudden?
You've obviously never been to Berkeley...
My brother-in-law, a Cal grad, describes Ann Arbor as "Berkeley: Cold."
That's a semi-irrelevant comment.
Campus is spectacular.
Academics are amazing.
Great school, great football.
Can't knock the choice, IME.
family members can watch games for free there!
if they sit on that hill
HD-Tedford is on line 1.
Can say the same for Michigan. Is Cal football that great? They do have the best looking smart girls.
I do understand Cal is an outstanding university and Berkeley is a great town -- but they are pulling in a damn good class. The last two recruiting classes (this year and last) are a big step up from previous years.
No poop in my pants.
Its official, he's going to Cal
Mr. Lyons, the path is all cleared off for 'ya. come on down!
Another 5-7 season in Berkeley and Tedford will be toast.
A 7-5 season in Ann Arbor and Rich Rod might be toast...
Thanks, David Brandon, for making the coaching staff's recruiting job much easier this offseason.
Have you read anything that would indicate why Walls cooled on us? Our lousy defense, the uncertainty at HC, the weather, all of the above...?
You ain't Lyons.
WHile I am in agreement with the idea of your post, I don't' think that was the breaker here. I guess I never really felt that Walls would be here.
He was doing his best Ricardo impression and recuriting for Michigan for the entire summer, and for the first half of the season. He was Michigan's to lose, and with him being a December graduate, the process lost him.
What's more annoying than David Brandon following the timeline is reading endless comments about it.
Well, let's pray to God that Sheldon Royster chooses Michigan. Because other than him, there are really no free safety-type kids on the board who are giving Michigan a look.
Wayne Lyons is more of a SS type.
And we literally have two scholarship free safeties (Vinopal and Johnson). Both were freshmen this year. Vinopal is likely to stick at FS, but Johnson split his time between OLB and FS, so I'm not counting on him being a stellar FS.
So . . . I sure hope Sheldon Royster commits.
Cal sucks. I could've understood Oregon, but Cal?
He doesn't think that waiting till after the bowl game is going to affect recruiting? My large butt it doesn't. Walls was a Michigan lean from the beginning and we blew it w/ him, could blow it w/ Dee Hart, not to mention many others who are coming down to the wire and picking other schools because Brandon hasn't pulled the trigger one way or the other!
Thank you Mr. Brandon for giving us no shot at this kid. Goodbye Zettel, goodbye Dee Hart. Tough to stay positive now.
on Brandon. Kids have chosen other schools over M before. Quite a few actually
It certainly doesn't help, but even if RR stays there's going to be a new DC. Would you like Brandon to say RR stays, and GERG with him?
I think Zettel probably goes Blue with either RR or Harbaugh. Hoke or other? Nah...
But what the hell do I know
I'll say that David Brandon needs to shit or get off the pot.
If this were three weeks ago I would agree, and in the abstract, I TOTALLY agree. But for now, I think Brandon has to follow through on what he said he would do, and we all have to accept (suffer?) the consequences. I think he has a plan, I just think the plan didn't fit well with the small-p politics of big time college football.
I really, really, really don't understand this argument. If Dave Brandon is half the super-awesome being that a lot of people think he is, then he should be smart enough to realize that the consequences from the uncertainty might be (read: are) worse than the minor fallout that would come from him abandoning his "plan."
Believe me, I'm sympathetic to your argument as well. I just think that at this point, he has something in mind that he thinks will work, and has decided that changing this mid-stream will be worse than not changing. I guess it's my somewhat shaken faith in the pimp hand etc. etc.
I know this has been rehashed a bajillion times, but it seems to me that there are really only three courses of action he could take:
- Rehire RR without caring about the bowl results.
- Hire JH, which he would have liked to do earlier, but JH's people told him to wait until JH coaches in the Orange Bowl.
- Wait and see how UM does in the Gator Bowl and make his decision accordingly.
Two further points:
- The only one of these that requires an early decision is 1, so I think we can rule that out, because Brandon is not stupid.
- #3 has been his stated position, so at least he's consistent with that. It is also possible that (3a) he wants to hire JH but JH isn't giving him a clear signal that he will be moved from Stanford, or that he won't take a NFL job; hence, DB is hedging his bets with #3, or (3b) he wants to keep RR but is under so much pressure from the donors that he is hoping the team will give a good showing in the bowl, thereby giving him cover to keep RR. I find this latter point (3b) implausible, because if UM gets rolled, what will he do?
I think the only likely scenarios are #2 and #3a, both of which more or less require him to stick to his plan.
He can come out and say, "listen, I know I said I was going to stick to this timetable, but these are circumstances that require immediate action for the health of the program moving forward blah blah, therefore I'm going to do this..."
Just my measely 2 cents though.
Completely agree. It is like watching your stock crash when you know the CEO of the company has all the power in the world to announce news to lift it, yet sits on his ass stupidly. Does this bowl game really influence RR's performance for the year? Either keep him or get rid of him. Do something. DO SOMETHING. DO SOMETHING!!!!
That is a lot better person to blame right now for losing recruits than "negative fans and message board posters". They seemed to be the target before DB decided to let RR hang in the breeze.
Both scapegoats are equally bullshit.
is the new black
because Dave Brandon has refused to clear up the coaching situation, but I don't know how anyone can say it isn't having a real, negative effect on recruiting efforts.
Because it's speculation. You assume there's a crop of recruits that would have committed to Michigan in the last two weeks but for Dave Brandon's evaluation period. The only decommitment was Sousa who, according to Tom, was wavering anyway. Hart's comments are the only evidence that it MAY be affecting one guy.
would have committed by now if they knew Rich Rodriguez was going to be the coach of Michigan going forward.
It's possible but you don't know that. Zettel has been "about to commit to Michigan" since last summer. He didn't do it when we were 5-0. So I'm doubting that DB's evaluation plan is the only true reason he hasn't pulled the trigger.
The key words in that statement are "I think"...
Avery Walls is a Cal Bear. On to the next one.
Honestly, Cal? Cal is like Michigan, but with worse football, in a worse conference, farther from his home. They've had a couple decent seasons in their program history, and never a great one. I don't see them ever going above about 9-3, and many seasons of 7-5.
But quit blaming DB for everything. We missed on Walls, it's a bummer but it happens. Only 3 weeks until DB fills us in on his master plan.
Thank you DB for not deciding on RR future...you really helped Walls decide that UM was not the place for him (sarcasm)!
Can we please stop bitching about David Brandon's timeline every damn time anything is mentioned ever?
He said it's happening. He's obviously going to stick to his word. Complaining about it on here isn't going to accomplish anything except showing that you're a sourpuss.
After he makes his "evaluation" or after National Signing Day, we can debate the effects of "The Timeline" all we want. But right now it's just useless.
I made exactly three posts on my blog tagged with Devin Gardner this season. One was on September 5, the day after he played against UConn. The second was on September 7, which revealed the results of a poll about Gardner burning his redshirt. The third was on September 26, the day after the BGSU game.
I don't really think that's overkill, but you're entitled to your opinion.
Thats what she said works better here.
It's a 5 week window and it's not close to Signing Day. If it was really about the timetable for Avery Walls, do you not think that he would reconsider his decision if RR was retained? Or do you think the thought process of high school kids is "well I'm deciding today, December 14th, and if I don't know 100% that my coach will be here on the exact day I decide then they're off my list forever."
Look at Dee Hart. He wants RR here. If RR stays, he stays (probably). The timetable doesn't matter because it's not near Signing Day.
It's like people can't believe that recruits would pick somewhere besides Michigan. How blasphemous, recruits NEVER chose other schools before DB set that timetable on November 29, 2010.
Best of luck to Avery. Now let's hope we can land Countess, Lyons, Zettel, Bryant, Frost, and another LB like Darian Cooper or Lamar Dawson. And Snake Oil Sammy Watkins!
His conference records are average at best! Cal is slipping.
There is some pressure on Tedford, and if next year doesn't go well there might be a lot. But he's also 2 or 3 wins short of being the winningest coach of all time at Cal, which has earned him a lot more patience than you'd get at one of the powerhouses.
