God is Good" My school (Eagles Landing Christian Academy) has given me the opportunity to make my college announcement at the school on Tuesday Dec 14th around 9.40am. I thank the ELCA staff, friends, teammates, coaches, mentors and family for all their support and advice
Haven't heard much from him lately, Anyone know the lastest news on him and if we are still the frontrunner?

and from what I remember from the last thread, timelines seem to point toward Oregon. There aren't many recruits that are considering UM that will be making their decision before our coaching situation resolves itself.
That said, all TomVH has said is Avery has been hard to read and really doesn't know where he will go other than it should be either Oregon or UM.

Regarding Walls, I have a strong feeling he is still considering Michigan. This is a position of need, where he could get playing time soon enough. I still hope he can red-shirt or be in the depth chart, but all 4 stars are good. I also think he would be a very good fit with the team, in various ways.

Seriously though - As much as we look at these "i'm in, no I'm going elsewhere" announcements from 17 year olds as somehow binding - the reality is nothing they say means a THING until February when they have to sign a letter of committment. Until then all we are really getting is "As of now this is where I want to go but I might change my mind so don't buy a hat or anything yet" directional headings.
Once the announcement is made by DB there will be recrutiting movement in both directions no matter which way he goes. Kids currently going blue will decommit if RR is let go and kids not having us on their radar will change their mind if Harbaugh is brought in. So my advice to everyone between now and DB Day is to take a deep breath on all these announcements and remember they mean nothing for a couple of months.

to a recruit that is planning on enrolling in January. National signing day isn't quite the same anymore with the EE option. Think about the difference it would make if we could get Dee, Frost, and Walls all here in January. It gives them an extra six months + working with Barwis, spring practice, and all the other voluntary things they can do like 7 on 7.
That can make a huge difference for a kid if he is needed on the field as a true freshman. So unless DB's evaluation is basically done sans the bowl game he should be able to make a decision shortly after. If he hasn't start his final evaluation yet then we have some kids who may still end up here, but miss out on some valuable time that could be spent getting adjusted to classes and learning the ropes of college football.

I had a predictable and cheaper one for 24 years. And the good news is the "Chevy" left my garage for another garage about 150 miles away. So after looking for a new car for a year or so I found a 10 year newer Ferrari for half the price of the old Chevy!

While that generally might be a good thing, wouldn't that hurt us this year? Since DB is holding off on the decision until after the bowl game, a number of Michigan-leaning recruits are not yet ready to commit to us. The fact that they cannot make a binding decision to go elsewhere means that we still have a shot once the decision is finally made.

Although I think Avery is a great player, here is some interesting information I found on mgorecruit.blogspot.com:
"Four star CB commit Delonte Hollowell is all in for Michigan, no matter who the coaching staff is next year, however he did say Michigan would be stupid to get rid of Coach Rodriguez. Amen! At least we know Hollowell won't be going anywhere if the worst happens...
Perhaps more interesting were Hollowell's comments about Wayne Lyons, who he got to hang out with when they both took their officials last weekend. Delonte seemed to think Wayne was very high on Michigan, even giving a 60% chance of Lyons going blue in the end. Sounds good!"
Wayne Lyons could be a great filler if Avery decides to go to Oregon.

Things do sound promising with Lyons, but he still has an official to Neb left. Both guys were ranked very high with most services and Lyons may have been a bit higher. Also, I think Lyons is more SS while Walls is more a FS. I am sure Tom or other guys may know better.
IMHO, Walls is a great player and was a strong lean that was even recruiting for us. Alos, big position of need, we have 3 CB's committed right now, maybe Brown moves over, but we need a safety. To me that is a pretty big loss.

The unfortunate part of all this is we are looking at these guys to come in and have impact right away. That is a pretty rare ocurrence for freshmen on defense. The preference would be to redshirt them.
The defensive talent and depth issue is a total mess.
Beyond that, we're way small. Make no mistake we are basically starting over on that side of the ball. This regime has brought us Jordan Kovacs (walk on) and Mike Martin (a Carr Recruit before he resigned, set to graduate after 2011). Demens and Craig Roh have possibilities. Maybe Avery. That's it in 3 seasons.
So we need to brace ourselves for more on the job training next year if we stay on the current course. Fine if you have some studs in waiting. We have no proof of that beyond hope.
My other question in trying to land any defensive player is that the party line on this board is that Robinson is gone and he is the problem. How is that playing with recruits? He is still employed, coaching the team, and will be on the sidelines in Jacksonville. That makes no sense and stands a chance of hurting our pitch.

I guess it's how you view the situation on defense. I don't see the depth chart on defense as a mess anymore, just very young. RR rebuilt the roster so it will take some time. I have seen some good young players with plenty of potential brought in by RR. Roh, Demens, the Gordons, Vinopal, Johnson, Avery, Black. Plenty of talent to work with just extremely young. Hard to judge how good any of these players will be yet without time to grow.
Of course his players still have a long way to go, it's only been 3 seasons. One season was not even his own recruiting class so that gives him true sophomores or redshirt freshman under his full recruiting classes. It's no surprise that two of the older players RR brought in are producing, Roh and Demens. As these players age, they will be much better. If RR does get fired and a new coach walks into this situation, they are coming into a much better situation than RR came into. We actually have young depth now!
This growing up thing is all part of the process when you are left with terrible depth. RR didn't have the luxury of sitting out his true freshman and redshirt freshman like most coaches can. Do you think Saban, Harbaugh, Miles, Chip Kelly, or Urban Meyer came into their job with the need to play all of their young players? NO! They had time to rebuild their rosters because of the young depth they were left with from the previous coaches.
Where is our young depth? Mike Martin is good, Jonas Mouton and Ryan Van Bergen are pretty good. Who else? Heck don't even look at good players, just find decent bodies to put on the field from the previous coaching regime. RR and staff are in a unique situation and it will only get better with time because now we have a real depth chart being built.

I would take Walls in a heartbeat obvs, but IMHO i'd rather have Lyons. Kid is a stud and smart as heck to boot.
Either or both would be greatly appreciated in this class though.

help me out. I have been thinking for the longest what ever happened to playing for the school and not the coach? If I were a coach I would like to think that the message is simple come to my great university and play for a great program, and if things fall into place then you may be able to go on an play professionally. Why does it always have to be about whether the coach stays around or not? Shouldn't the only concern be about getting a quality education and allwoing the chips to fall where they may? I understand everything is business but why not look at the big picture and the lifelong friendships etc that you build up. I thought it was about turning boys into men. Sorry for ranting just trying to understand the world of college football.

I think playing for a coach you trust is important. If Walls committed to us, and a coach such as Lane Kiffen came here (would NEVER happen), don't you think it would suck to be committed to the university with an ass of a coach like him?

First of all, I am glad you don't have enough points to open thread, there are enough dumb threads open already.
Secondly, as Bill Clinton could tell you, it all depends on what is is. Dee Hart's daily flippant statement IS meaningless.
Because a statement is printed in a newspaper does not make it thread worthy. On one hand we complain incessantly about the MSM, on the other hand we want to start a thread on every piece of diarrhea they print. You and this blog are much better off with dumb posts, this being an excellent example of one, as opposed to starting dumb threads.

We need some filters on the MGoBlog to eliminate this sort of thing. I have long advocated the "are you serious" button to pop up after you hit save. However, a "would Tom VanHaaren approve?" button targeting any mainstream media related headline would make a lot of sense.
