Austin-American Statesman: Greg Davis to Iowa as OC

Submitted by iawolve on

Having lived in Texas for a long time, Kirk Bohls is one connected dude at UT so I have to think this is legit. This is an interesting hire in the sense that UT fans (I attended grad school there so I know a ton of them) hate Greg Davis. I mean hate the guy. This is strange since Greg Davis was there for a NC win and coached McCoy, Young, Simms and Applewhite who were all pretty successful. However, most UT fans claim that they won in spite of Greg Davis since his play calling sucked, particularly in big games. His goal was to out-execute you, which worked against many opponents due to the crazy recruiting classes Texas would regularly pull in. Will be interesting to see where this goes for Iowa who will not have superior talent compared to the teams in the B1G, seems like a double down on Lloyd-ball for Kirk.

The criticism still doesn't make sense. He says that Davis tries to out-execute you. Which makes me believe that the coach focuses on fundamentals and scheme. But then he goes on to say that they were just lucky they had more talent than 95% of the country. So it leads me to believe that his problem wasn't because he tried to "out-execute" the other team, but just tried to beat them straight up with talent. Technically every coach tries to out-execute the other. So I don't really get his point with that statement.

predictable. He simply took advantage of having better players than the other team and would out execute or over power them. This does not work well when your opponent has equal talent. Also, this is not my observation since I never really paid attention to UT football when I was in Texas beyond some obligatory games, I put my energy in watching Michigan play. This is feedback from many, many UT fans.

I lived in Austin for 7 years, many of which were during Davis' tenure... and UT fans absolutely hated him.  And from my completely unbiased and independent opinion (since I am not a UT fan), I think they had every reason to hate him... he had ridiculous talent, but the playcalling was way too predictable which meant they would steamroll all their competition except for when they met up  with real teams (like Oklahoma, who would manhandle them regularly).

Unless you're Alabama, you still only get so many to choose from.  Yes, they'll always have an elite class, but those guys have to meet expectations.  And really, up until the last two seasons, the Mack Brown era has been pretty prolific.  10 straight years in the top 15, 4 BCS games in 6 years, two championship game appearances, one national title.  Not much more you can ask for.

Why why why can't we rescue Soup Campbell from the disaster that is Iowa football?  I miss that guy so much.

Though admittedly Soup is probably pretty comfortable with zone left,
