Auburn Gets Play Calls Stolen

Submitted by Ziff72 on

You would have thought Loeffler would have learned to be a little more decpetive with his play calls after Northwestern stole them from us back in the day.    I bet on MSU so I loved watching Auburn do their best job of channeling Debord on offense.    Hopefully Scott comes up with something quick or he'll be 1 and done at Auburn.

Maybe SlightlyBlue is more fitting if you don't know/remember Scott Loeffler.  He coached guys by the name of Brady, Griese, Henson, Henne, and Navarre.  After leaving Michigan he coached another guy you probably haven't heard of by the name of Tim Tebow.

I would say 'accused' is a bit of harsh wording, and implies some impropriety on WK's part.  Unless they were tapping into the headseats, if they were able to figure out the calls, it really should be "Western Kentucky was smart enough to do the same thing against Alabama."

Good distinction and one worth noting.  It would play out similar to poker - if you are using mirrors or cameras to see your opponents hand, not cool.  If you can read his bluff on his face, totally acceptable and cool.

You are so right. Belichick was case example of the first part. If Western Kentucy managed to figure out a few calls, just by observing on field play, cudos to them as that is an example of the second part you mentioned.

First of all, I'm not sure why defensive players/coaches would be announcing that they had figured out the signals.  That's something I would want to keep to myself.

Secondly, I'm surprised this type of thing doesn't happen more often.  I've figured out a few opposing teams' signals by watching their coordinators, and that's just mid-game.  If you have game tape that you can play over and over of signals and plays, then I would think we'd see this happening frequently.

would change our playcalling at the line at half time, just in case the other team started to pick up on it, which shouldn't have been hard, considering we started every game with calls of "green" being runs and "blue" being sky.  Way too simple, in my opinion, but we would have different numbers that keyed in on whether the audible was legit or just Quarterback banter to confuse the defense

I was wondering what the sentiments of the Auburn fanbase were toward Scot Loeffler seeing as how their offense has yet to show up two games into the season. He might be a good candidate to take over for Borges when the latter decides to call it a career, but not if he crashes and burns at Auburn...

The calls are the fire Chizic the head coach. The OC and DC are both brand new but the fans want to see Chiz gone and take someone like Petrino (without the motorcycle). It is not the OC fault when he has recruits taken for a spread offence and he is trying to run a pro set. The square pegs don't really go in those round holes.

Auburn just needs to buy another star QB in JuCo.

as all sports team try to recognize the other teams signals.

the only sport where its really harshly looked upon is baseball when the runner on second is trying to steal the catchers pitch signals.

If you don't like it, mix up your signals better

"For his part, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has doubled down on Frazier as his starting quarterback and told reporters Wednesday that any issues with signals would be fixed by Saturday's date with Louisiana-Monroe, fresh off its stunning, overtime upset at Arkansas."

For some reason, I have the feeling that Chizik is trying to purchase an Enigma machine at this very moment, and in kind, ULM will have a Turing machine at one end of the bench.

I played at NU and we def were successful sign stealers. We were bright, three fmr valedictorians on our team as well as a handful of engineering majors. Those guys would take clipboards and each watch a person across the field signing, however many people the opponent had giving signs. Write down each gesture, write down what the play was. After a few comparison's they might know who the "hot" sign giver was and then it wasn't long until we had all the signs. My teammates would laugh incredulously at how simple most team's signs were. More than a few teams used the same exact system as each other. I believe it was Indiana my fr year who used the same system we did. We alerted our coaches and made a mid-game change just in case they figured it out too.
