Athletics Department survey mentions MGOBLOG

Submitted by Craig on

So, I got this e-mail today from the athletics department asking if I'd like to receive spam e-mails from them. To zero in on how I'd like like to receive those e-mails, they had me fill out a survey (there was a $50 MDen gift card involved, so I bit). Anyway, there was one question that acknowledge the existance of MGOBLOG. I almost spit my coffee on the computer screen when I saw it. Now just to get the word "mgoblog" out of Brandon's mouth.

I thought the community would get a kick out it.

This isn't the first time MGoBlog has been mentioned on an official site like this.

But I think it's about time the athletic department acknowledges THE PARTY ROOM.

I noticed that too.  Found it interesting that they actually listed mgoblog, rather than just leaving it as "Fan website/blog".  By listing mgoblog by name, fans who are unaware of the blog's presence might google mgoblog out of curiosity (and might eventually switch from their current medium to mgoblog).  I have no doubt that the people designing the survey thought about this as well, so they must be encouraged by the increased fandom that the blog develops.

Differentiating blogs like this one from the "official" media by calling it a "fan blog" is the last bastion of defense for those who want to pretend that the old media model is still superior to the new one.

MSM outlets still have superior access to teams and facilities, but bloggers care more.  Most of all, bloggers don't pretend to be "objective;' this provides a more honest product for the consumer.

Nitpicking here...

The survey said "Fansites/Blogs," so it didn't really call MGoBlog a "fansite."  And given the fact that the U has provided MGoBlog with normal press priveleges (field pass, press row access, etc), I think the athletic department thinks very highly of MGoBlog (whether they want to or not...)

I'd guess it depends on whether the Athletic Department produced it or outsourced it.  It is strange that the AD would be advertising other sites, since I'm sure they'd prefer that "MGoBlue.com" was everyone's choice.  (Though since they can't cover things like recruiting it's a pipe dream).  But a marketing research firm would want the most accurate results possible, so they'd include the info.

Not worth a separate post, but I wish I could have double +1'd the OP. One for the informative post, and another for the cool link to the image to enlarge. Didn't  know you could do that in a post.

You know this site's stature in the Michigan blogosphere where there is "MGoBlog" and "et cetera" and the athletic department is opening the door for potential new traffic here.

I thought about choosing "Online Advertisements" and then sending an e-mail saying how disappointed I was that I had not been cheering for ITT Tech all these years, but I decided to be honest with the AD.

This doesn't suprise me. I reading that MSC and the other admins were keeping an eye on mgoblog (especially the flight tracker) when we were going through coaching changes. They are certainly aware of its existence and power.

Simply put, this is the best resource for Michigan sports out there. Bravo to all those involved.

Hopefully the athletic department is preparing legal action to shut down mgoblog for all of it's anti-michigan posturing (e.g., anti-Rose Bowl, pro-spread offense, etc)

then you should consider sending a FOIA request for them.

It's not complicated.  You can just send an email to someone in the department.  You should try to send it to their "FOIA coordinator" for the Athletic Department, but if you can't find out who that is, they are supposed to route it to that person internally.

It's a knock down drag out fight til the end... but mgoblog prevails on # of hits! (This statement is not factual) Down goes mgoblue, down goes mgoblue!  I'd like to think of mgoblog as a BA George Foreman in the 70's...

Minus the grill, of course.. although - a lean, mean blog machine could work..

My wife bought me an IPad for my b-day a couple months ago. I didn't want one for the longest time because I had no desire to play angry birds or any of the app games. I thought it was another stupid kids gaming device. But I get it and start searching for apps. My first search was for Michigan related apps. I had been using scout and rivals and if all else failed espn for recruiting news. Then I found this app. I downloaded it and have been reading it everyday since then. This blog should be recognized by the athletic department. I am a huge fan living a couple states away and this by far has the best info out there. Thanks for all the hard work you guys do, and for the laughs my wife doesn't get.

Not that it matters to anyone, but I have a pet peave about the use of the word "mediums".

Mediums is a plural term for certain tee-shirt sizes and people who conduct seances.  Media is the collective term for a communication (or in my professional case, advertising) medium like Mgoblog and another, like ESPN TV.

Just my axe to grind.
