Assuming BCS...who do you want? ...and where?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Assuming Michigan is now in the BCS...who do you want to play? Which bowl (seems most likely to be the Sugar and the Fiesta)?

Right now we aren't in a BCS bowl and we are on the outside looking in.

Auto-qualifers (seven teams):
LSU
Alabama
Louisville
Wisconsin
Oklahoma State
Oregon
Virginia Tech

At-large (three teams):
Stanford
Houston
Oklahoma

- In order to get a BCS bid, we have to be ranked higher than Oklahoma as well as Kansas State and Michigan State.
- If Clemson wins the ACC, we don't get a bid.  Clemson would get the automatic and Virginia Tech gets an at-large.
- If Georgia wins the SEC, we don't get a bid if LSU stays in the top 2.  Georgia, LSU, and Alabama all get automatic bids still.
- Boise State doesn't get in because they have to win their conference to qualify, something they can't do at this point.

The bowls can pick whoever they want, so long as a team is eligible.  No bowl is picking three loss OU or two-loss Virginia Tech over this Michigan team (same goes for a two loss Ok. State team).  The only thing we remotely have to worry about at this point is some sort of bullshit scenario where two teams that didn't win the SEC get put in the national title game.  I don't see anyone associated with college football allowing that clusterfuck to take place.

Especially if we're talking Sugar and Fiesta (we are) the VT name doesn't carry enough weight to sell tickets and get TV ratings, IMO. Michigan definitely does.

For reference, the ACC has never gotten an at-large bid, Michigan has only been eligible and passed up once. VT's only option is to win the ACC, they'll go to whatever second tier game the ACC has tie ins for if they don't.

You are wrong in so many ways I don't know where to start, but for one thing a two loss VT team probably doesn't go in front of us and for another we don't need to be ahead of Kansas State to be picked in front of them...

Lets go to the Fiesta so Rich Rod can come see his old boys...and lets play Stanford and show them who the real Academic warriors are...and then give a shoutout to Harbaugh

Sounds like fun

matchup, but it would be a good game, and it is at least somewhat plausible, because the Fiesta and Orange Bowls might be dealing with cases of fan fatigue. Oklahoma's been to the Fiesta Bowl three times in the last five years, and VT has been to the Orange Bowl three times in the last four(not counting regular season road trips to play the Miami Hurricanes-- add those, and VT would be going to Sun Life Stadium for the sixth time in five seasons). It's possible the Fiesta and Orange Bowls could switch conference champions, and VT-Michigan could happen in the Fiesta. The Sugar Bowl could also decide to offer a switch, and Michigan could swap places with VT. If Clemson wins the ACC, though, the Tigers would be locked into the Orange Bowl, since Clemson would figure to bring plenty of people to south Florida.

My guess is that an OU/UM game would be a massive TV selling point, but if OSU wins the Big 12 then I'd like to play Houston.  Oregon terrifies me, and Stanford has the type of QB that would pick apart this defense (even though I do think UM would find a way to get some pressure).  Houston has the type of offense that you can scheme toward stopping with a month, but a win doesn't really prove anything except Houston is probably overrated, and a loss puts a bad taste in your mouth.

And if for some reason Alabama is NOT in the MNC game, there is no benefit in playing them twice in consecutive neutral-field contests.

I'm a bit scared of Houston.  I just don't want to lose to them because a good buddy of mine is a Houston alum and I have to constantly listen to him talk about how Keenum should win the Heisman, how the Big 10 sucks, how Keenum winning against Tulsa is more impressive than RGIII winning this year against OU, how Houston could put up 30 on Alabama.

This is just what I remember from this week.  Keenum can sling it, if we lose I'd never hear the end of it.

i hope they make the fiesta bowl vs. whoever they put them with. This is only because I'm going to Haiti for 8 days on Jan 3, and my only chance of watching them in the Sugar Bowl would be to see them after I land in Miami at our hotel we are taking the night at. Our plane leaves Cincy at 6:30 and probably arrives in Miami around 8:30. Couple that with plane delays, large church group traveling delays and I am extremely lucky to catch any of the second half at our hotel...but we'll see.
