Asked about MSU, Dantonio unintentionally references Ric Flair

Submitted by OC Alum91 on

"We've always taken a systematic approach to recruiting, we try not to have too much 'flair'..... um....(breaks into smile)  I guess he's (Ric Flair's) down there,.... I don't know what to say, it just sort of slipped..."

Not a huge deal (maybe just an unintentional pun more than anything else), but seems to me that when asked about MSU's approach to recruiting, Dantonio inadvertently says "flair", makes the connection to SOTS in his mind, and then laughs out loud.  At least he shows a sense of humor to laugh at his unintentional advertisement for UM.

Because of SOTS, *everyone* is thinking about UM, even MSU.  MSU's head coach is supposed to be talking about MSU, but he instead reminds people about UM.

Hey, I'm not here to pretend that I like Dantonio, but let's not pretend that he's not the greatest football coach of all time, and a great person, arguably one of the best of all time, as well. Just a strict disciplinarian and phenomenal, charismatic human being who has never made a questionable ethical decision in his entire coaching career. He is solely focused on his own program, rather than what Michigan is doing at any given time, and has initiated a clear culture change in the beautiful city of East Lansing. I, an obvious UM fan, which can be seen by my ambiguous username that very obviously alludes to something regarding Michigan State, and the 'Go Blue!' in my signature.

I'm sick of all of this trash talk before we beat them on the field, of which they're clearly the new premier football program in the state of Michigan for the foreseeable future, and possibly won't ever happen again. As they prove time and time again, recruiting results don't matter even a little, and we're going to have trouble. Have I mentioned their glorious streak of ten win seasons, and the fact that they were in the playoff last year?

I, being an obvious UM fan who inexplicably has garnered 200 points, wish we didn't find ourselves in such a situation against our worthy rivals, that likeable, highly-skilled group of great people. Go Blue, but if there's one team I wouldn't mind losing against, it's those heroic Spartans!

Neg me if you want but the people that defend MSU should just chill or back off a bit. I get it, they've handed us our asses lately and so has OSU. That being said, we can talk shit because we have an all time record on them. Continue the shit talk and keep the rivalry heated. Fuck the other schools. GO BLUE!

True that blows but they can still suck us! The last decade has been a shit show no doubt, but if we maintain a continuity in our coaching position I think we will get back to where we want. MSU is so far behind us in wins though that it'll take decades to catch up. We will be fine.

1) I'm not equating Michigan to the Browns.
2) Michigan's all time lead is very large.
3) Pros play each other 2x per year

So not the same, but way back my dad used to say this about the Browns over the Steelers. At one point in the early 70s, the Browns led the series something like 35-13. Since then, the Steelers have pulled ahead making the overall record 70-58.

College football is all about "what have you done for me lately." People don't give two shits about what we did 30-40 years ago. That's why so many people have always said Michigan is a program trapped in the past.

People only care about what you've done lately, especially outside observers, and what we've done lately, relative to our rivals, has been nothing but losing.

We have won a national championship 30 years more recent than MSU's last national championship. And the point is that you define "lately" differently than I do and everyone else does. Just because MSU has beaten us lately doesn't mean that they didn't also lose 6 in a row right before that.
