Art Regner weighs in on Harbaughgeddon 2014. Is he credible?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

Art Regner says Jim is a "Michigan geek" and had this to say:

I don't know Regner, but this was quite interesting:

Anyone know much about this guy? Almost sounds like he's putting words in Harbaugh's mouth to me. Thoughts?

that was a bald faced lie. The quote says he wanted to play for the Cardinal as his #1 choice. .. Lets be real.. If Jim Harbaugh wanted to play for Stanford as a kid he could have played for Stanford.   What do you want him to say in that situation anyway? Yea Stanfords alright.. I wish I was at Michigan though.

If you read the linked article, the "this was my #1 choice all along" comment appears to be in reference to Harbaugh's decision to accept the job coaching Stanford in 2007 (that is, Stanford was his #1 choice among possible coaching jobs he could have had at that time, not his #1 choice for a place to play college football when coming out of high school).

yes, Jim Harbaugh was so very desperate to go to Stanford but the mighty, mighty Cardinal had no room for him on their loaded roster that was to win a combined 18 games during his college career. Yes, the school for which his father was the defensive coordinator just never decided to give poor young Jim a shot so he had to settle for being a 4 year letterman at a school coming off two Rose Bowls in three seasons.

If you actually believe that Jim Harbaugh really longed to go to Stanford, I have some really awesome beachfront property to sell you in Nevada.

...I'd be right.

"A week earlier, Harbaugh had said "yes" to the question of whether he could see himself at Stanford forever. After all, it had taken him 25 years to get there from literally across the street at Palo Alto High School, where he played his final two years of high school football after his father, Jack, became defensive coordinator at Stanford.

"This is where I wanted to go, but they didn't offer me a scholarship," Harbaugh said."

I've produced two simple declarative statements made by Jim Harbaugh, and you haven't offered any factual evidence to prove he was lying. Who's the gullible one?

There are only two possibilities here: either Harbaugh was telling the truth about his preferences for Stanford over Michigan, or he was straight out lying when he made those statements.

The first doesn't bother me; where he wanted to play ball doesn't change the fact that he's a tremendous coach. If he was lying because he thought that's what the Stanford people wanted to hear, then he'd do the same thing in Ann Arbor.

According to the UM football stats database, Harbaugh's first season at UM was a redshirt in 1982. The five seasons prior to that were '77, '78, '79, '80, and '81.

1977 Bill Walsh 9-3

1978 Bill Walsh 8-4

1979 Rod Dowhower 5-5-1

1980 Paul Wiggin 6-5

1981 Paul Wiggin 4-7

So your "5 non-winning seasons" was a program that was coming off three winning seasons out of the five, including two by Bill Walsh. It certainly wasn't at Michigan's level then, but it wasn't as bad as you're trying to make it out to be, either. It wasn't close to the tire fire it was when he took over there as coach.

I remember when it was Karsch and Regner on WXYT and Scott Anderson was teamed up with Marc Spindler. Hard to believe that was almost ten years ago on Detroit sports radio now.

I don't get the sense that Regner knows anything more than anyone else right now, but is simply giving his own take on how the stars seem to be aligning for a run at Harbaugh. He is a Michigan alum though, I believe.

So I have heard from two people that work at U of M that spoke with a former running back from the 80s that stated Harbaugh to Michigan is happening. Take it for what it's worth (third hand info and all) but it offered me a small ray of hope.

I have to admit, hearing "I heard from two people who heard from Jamie Morris that Harbaugh is happening" doesn't sound too compelling.  That said, there have been enough of those types of anecdotes and reports that it has to be a possibility.

I completely understand and agree. I told the guys they better not be fucking with me because I am very fragile at this point. One guy played OL at Michigan and he said Jamie indicated it was a "done deal". So we will see. Like I said take it for what it's worth but it lifted my spirits a bit about the prospect of Harbaugh coming on board.

While I would like to believe that, and I have no doubt they've reached out to harbaugh, I find it very very difficult to gfive any credence to the proposition it is a "done deal" because he says so. If anything, I think Jamie has proven that he does not have any reliable contacts at the athletic department recently, and I cannot imagine he has gained any inroads with Jim Hackett.

I know they used to be friends. Morris has told the story about Harbaugh making the "M academics" comment when he took the Stanford job, and how it really offended Morris. He said they had a very heated discussion about it, and basically quit speaking to each other after that. Has something happened in the menatime to change that? Don't know.

I am staying very cautious about any insider information until a contract is signed and announced by the University. I had an inside source close to the hiring situation last time around who informed me that Harbaugh to Michigan was a done deal and they were just working out the details. Maybe they just couldn't work out the details, maybe it was a bad source, maybe Jim was playing Michigan for a better contract elsewhere. Who knows? Whatever the case, there is going to be a lot of smoke blowing around until anything official is announced.

The fact that Art Regner is still on Detroit radio shocks the hell out of me. But hey, Rob Parker still has a job around here so I shouldn't be that surprised.

I remember during the last coaching search, someone (a trusted poster here) said they saw Hoke getting a sandwich at Zingerman's. I thought to myself, there's no doubt he's in the final two or three if the guy's in town. He wasn't really thought to be a serious candidate at that point. So if LSA sees Harbaugh picking up a Syd's Design Studio this Saturday morning, then I will crack a bottle and let my body waddle

God it's going to be amazing to have Jim on the sidelines. Teams will start being intimidated to play us and will respect the M. It's been a long time since that's been the case.
