Arrelious Benn on NFL Late Hits

Submitted by GunnersApe on
There has been D. Warren bashing due to a bad NFL Combine. So I ‘m driving into work today listening to last night’s replay of Late Hits with Gil Brandt and they had A. Benn on. I couldn’t find the interview online to link it but here’s the summery: GB “Who scared you most in the Big Ten?” AB “Michigan’s CB D. Warren” GB “No one else, not Iowa’s DB’s” AB “No, they were a good D but Warren was the best in the league” Again it’s not word for word but he pretty much said Warren was the only CB that he worried about. I wouldn’t worry to much about Combine numbers (4.6 forties). I’m hoping Warren turns into the next Ty Law. Just thought I pass this along. Maybe one of the savvy users here can get the link. It’s Sirius NFL's Late Hits from 2 Feb 10.

That's interesting to hear. Sometimes it's worth listening to those who have first hand experience with (or against) a player. I wish Warren (and may as well throw BG in there as well) was in Maize and Blue one more year, it would possibly make our defensive scary (in a 2006 sorta way.)

There's no doubt that Warren is good. He wasn't a 5-star for nothing, and I don't hold 2008 against him. He made a lot of good plays in 2009. The guy who seemed to take advantage of him the most was Michael Floyd, but that guy's going to make a lot of people look silly for years to come. Benn only had 1 catch for 11 yards this past season.

This defense could be very good with the personnel it has right now. We won't know until we see how they play in the Big Ten. ...this team could become "scary in a good way" as it is now. I think this team is very close on both sides of the ball, and that the growth of the program won't be in stairsteps, but more in quantum leaps. It seems like RR teams go from "WTF" to having the "it factor" in time frames that make no mathematical sense. This could be the year the Wolverines "get it" on both sides of the ball. We all know that RR's teams look very good once they have their personnel and systems in place. The difference between 70 percent and 95 percent plays a lot larger than those numbers on the field. RR was hired because he has been successful everywhere he has gone; I think we will see both sides of the ball "click" this season.

I hope you're right. Obviously my opinion has no merit, but I'm anxious about this year more than any other so far, because I really believe we'll surprise people. If Michigan starts off strong (e.g. 4-0), I feel the media won't lay off until Michigan gets those 5th and 6th wins.

I'm sure Benn is very afraid of a 10-yard cushion and a safety that can't run (Kovacs). D-Warren is a great physical talent and I really respect what he gave UM but I'm not sure he was a "GREAT" corner. With all the love for Jimmy Clausen, I have to see repeatedly Michael Floyd go up and over DW for catches. I wish him luck in the draft but I think another year could have propelled him higher in the draft.

To be fair to Warren, he obviously didn't run a great 40, but Haden is expected to be a top 10 pick overall and he ran a 4.57; If Haden is expected to be a can't miss pick, there is no reason why Warren can't be a good NFL CB.

on the combine numbers. The track meet just tells you what these guys would do if they were to join a track team. IMHO, it has nothing to do with football. There have been so many all-time great football players who were horrible in the combine. How about Jerry Rice's 40 time? Who cares about those meaningless stats, I want to know if the kid can play ball. The most usefull parts of the combine are the interviews and the medical examination. Let people like Al Davis pick the guys who run the best 40 times, Bill Polian will be happy to have real football players.

Wouldn't it at least be more informative to scouts to see somebody run the timed 40 in pads? I know the numbers wouldn't be as impressive, but we hear them talk about which guys seem to be faster on the field anyway. Some guys seem to lose less of their speed in pads than others, and until the NFL allows players to show up for games in their skivvies, it might be nice to see which players actually are fast in pads.
