Around the Horn rips Rodriguez for postgame comment

Submitted by InRodWeTrust333 on

Was just watching Around the Horn when the entire Around the Horn crew ripped on Rich Rodriguez for his "You wanna hang me from a building?" comments. They said he needs to stop making everything about him and the wording bothered them. First of all, it bothers me that it seems like you can't say anything these days without offending someone. Second of all, all he is doing is telling people to calm down and things will be okay because it is just one loss. He isn't making it all about him. It's the media that always makes it about him and tries to come for his head at the first sign of trouble. Give the guy a break.

Just an observation: I speculate that the co-opting of the F** word has been accelerated because it is easier (than other bad characterizations) to use as an adjective to describe particular actions that people see as 'girly'.  I suppose if I am on the dance floor, someone might say that I am dancing awfully 'white'.  But it seems like calling someone a 'girl' tends to be a bigger smack-talk among guys.  I am not saying that is right but I have definitely heard that context being abused the most.  (BTW...I am not defending this guys stupid comments)

I would agree that these comments are prevalent and not always intended to be hurtful. We need to change the connotation of that word and if it takes a few overreactions and a few hurt feelings so be it. To quote Dan Savage,

Gay kids are dying. Fuck feelings.

To use a slur like that is totally unacceptable in any circumstances.

I kind of agree.. It was a stupid comment yes, but I don't really care that much about being politely correct. IMO, the comments I read about certain M Players in the MSU Live Blog were much more disheartening and pissed me off more than this one.

It's just annoying that it's so hard to find any reliable sports sources these days. The members of this blog, specifically those with a ton of MGoPoints, are the only ones I can really rely on these days for good information. Heres a thank you to all of the blog for keeping me (and im sure many others) sane.

...almost nobody watches ATH on a regular basis anyway.  It's like that ages-old zen koan:

If somebody rips RR and nobody is around to hear it, did he really get ripped at all?

It bothers me that you're bothered by other people getting offended by something that somebody said. Especially when said offendees are paid to have opinions that they may or may not actually hold for the sake of a television show.

Whenever I hear someone state a stupid or douchey sports opinion, I always think to myself, "Wow, you're pretty sharp, you should be on Around the Horn buddy".

You mean to tell me that Woody Paige, J.A. Adande, and Tim Cowlishaw do not agree with something a coach said?  On a show predicated on talking heads generating 22 minutes of conflict a day?

Coach Rod can't catch a break from the media.    All the guy has ever done is care about young men, be a stickler about going to class, run a tight ship regarding keeping kids on the straight and narrow (very few discipline problems), and make a mistake that most teams have made regarding practice time.... and for his reward all he gets is demonized at every opportunity.   The guy has to live up to an impossible standard - perfection.

When I look at what he looked like when he took this job (youthful and vibrant)  vs. what he looks like today (vibrant but hardly youthful anymore), sadly, in 3 short years Coach Rod's face has become a roadmap which shows the enormous pressure this guy has been under.

He is a good human being.    He deserves better

So it offends you when someone is offended?

/sarcasm - I am also getting tired of it as well

I think RR should be taking the heat.  He is the head coach of this team so when they fail he should be called on it, when they win he should get the credit.  I don't think he should be getting railed for one loss, but with the 24/7 sports media they are constantly looking for something to talk about.

I don't recall any follow up questions at the press conference that shared their sentiment. RR was clear in the context that he wasn't going to let the loss bring him and the team down.  They are moving on, and so are we.

he's allowed to be uptight sometimes, or maladroit. Hell, catch me around the house at certain points of any given day. Living under the microscope can't be easy; he's handled it pretty well, given. . .

I don't want to hang him from the building yet. Greg Robinson..yes.  There was some poor coaching the defense doesn't make any strides and at this point I think we all know it's not going to get any better any time soon.  It must really suck for our guys on offense going into every game knowing they have to score 40 to win it.  Someone start a website or something please.  FireGregRobinsonandhisatrociousdefensiveschemes.com

Jay Mariotti used be a regular on ATH.  Woody "sexual harassment" Paige is a regular on ATH.  Nuff said.

I'd rather read Drew Sharp than watch ATH.

ESPN is now to sports as what MTV is now to music videos.

This coming from the same source (Woody Page specifically) that said in Jan/Feb 2008 that RR should be suspended because of his buyout drama and the fact that he was on the sideline for the bowl game against Florida?  Surely you jest.

Around the Horn is a short segment from 4 idiots that don't know anything more than just that comment.  They my as well put Drew Sharp on there and have him talk negative about the Chilean minors coming out..........everything with them is negative.
