Arnett Using Commitment Eve to Commit to...All of Them?

Submitted by Swazi on

Ed-M: Six! Six fake commits ah ah ah. Sorry for hijacking this thread, but it's too entertaining not to have it all in one place.

For those just joining us, 4-star WR DeAnthony Arnett has a press conference tomorrow night to announce his school choice. In the meantime, he is having a bit of fun at the expense of fans who follow this stuff way too closely.

Look in the mirror, then look here.

Wherever DeAnthony commits, I give him credit -- this is one of the best roasts of the recruiting nutters that I've ever seen....

He's picking USC:

Wait, no, it's Michigan:

Just kiddin, M. It's Central Michigan:

Aw Hell, It's Tennessee:

]

And...it's Slippery Rock...wait no the 'University of Michigan State':

No no no it's "The University of Cal" (last one):

And then the respective online fanbases get the screen turned around on them.

Thank you DeAnthony and brotherguy for a hilarious night. [/takeover]

Not sure if this is him being serious, or him messing around with everyones head again.  Take it for what it's worth.

A lot of these kids are put on a pedestal at an early age.  Is it really surprising that they are egotistical?  It doesn't necessarily mean that he is a bad kid or isn't worth the risk.

I am of the belief that our coaching staff can curb the attitude.  In the least, they won't let him be a cancer to the team.

Until this coaching staff pulls in a class of recruits that isn't chock-full of guys who immediately transfer, have grade issues, or have attitude problems, then I reserve the right to question some of the kids they recruit.

I think the last time I openly questioned the character of a Michigan commit, it was Austin White.  That didn't quite work out so well for Michigan, either.

(I'm not saying Arnett is Austin White II, but it's not exactly a habit to question these kids' character.)

I, for one, am hoping DeAnthony Arnett "takes his talents" to a school other than the University of Michigan.

Fred Jackson's spent two years recruiting this kid, but I guess he's not as good a judge of character as a random internet guy who's never met him.

You're fairly level headed so I'll use my same point below and hopefully we can have a rational conversation. Why is it that someone can adore these videos and want him but when others look at them and see the complete opposite they can't state their differing opinion?

Because dissention on this blog is a sin.

--- (Unrelated now.)

When we talk about character, what exactly are we talking about? Because there are plenty of jack asses on every college team, one we recruited (and got a commitment from) last year who I've been with in person. In fact we hardly took offense to Demar Dorsey's colorful history, so what does it take to have 'bad character'?

old athlete based on nothing more than him having some fun with the people that have probably made his life unbearable for the last 2+ years. Seriously, put yourself in his shoes, with overzealous fans from School X constantly badgering him and hanging on his every syllable trying to project what his decision will be....I for one think it is a rather intelligent reaction to perhaps turn things around a bit on these people and possibly make them see how ridiculous they are.

There's a HUGE difference between stating that you don't like what he's doing and saying that you don't want him to attend Michigan.

First of all, RR talked about this TODAY;  these recruits look at stuff like this.  A kid looking at Michigan will probably end up at MGoBlog, and will probably read what was written about him.  I don't want these kids reading "we don't want you."  Remember the Carvin Johnson recruitment?

Moreover, the coaches have actually MET the kid.  They've spoken with his coaches, his school, and God knows who else.  Does that mean the kid won't turn into a locker room problem? Not necessarily.  But it's the same as people who try to judge a kid's football skills based on three plays on a highlight reel.  People who look at the full game tape are in a much better position to judge a kid.  So if the coaches want the kid, and there are no real red flags*, then who the hell are any of us to say "no, we know better, and we don't want this kid and his internet-using rabble-rousing."

*and no, these videos don't count.

Please look back through the thread and find where I said "We don't have any kids with good character on the team."

I bet you can't find anything like that.

What I said was that this coaching staff has made plenty of mistakes with the players they have recruited.  If you don't believe me, check our APR rating or look at the number of non-qualifiers from the class of 2010.

the coaching staff has obviously made some pretty good decisions too. They aren't perfect and all the transfers, etc. tell me it must be pretty difficult to predict how an 18 year old kid will behave, even when you get to know him pretty well, so maybe it isn't smart to make baseless assumptions about DeAnthony because of some Twitter videos he posted.

You're absolutely right.  The coaches have made a lot of good decisions, too (Craig Roh, Roy Roundtree, etc.).  This isn't about them.

These coaches are capable of recruiting "bad eggs."  They've proven that, especially in the 2010 class.

It is MY OPINION that I'm not a fan of DeAnthony Arnett.  And as I said above, these Twitvid posts are not the only bits of information I know about Arnett.  If they were, I might be out of line.  They're not.

I think everyone is just arguing with you about this because you are Magnus and you said something remotely out of line with the general concensus on this board. Everyone is so willing to get highly rated players on the team so we can start winning, that they are willing to overlook the warning signs the player puts up. I don't agree with discounting students that didn't have the grades to come here, because that's not a character issue that we should be worrying about IMO, but I did notice that you forgot probably the biggest headcase off of your list: Terrelle Pryor.

Annnnnnd here's the goofy Michigan commitment video.  He went all out with it, have to love it.  Making fun of "ALL IN" meme, playing the Victors throughout, ripped off an OSU sweatshirt at the beginning.

Talks up Denard, Devin, and "that explosive offense."

I didn't get quite the same sense of mockery from this video, but I expect there at least two more to come tonight.

I'd say Michigan has a better chance than SC based on the videos, but who the hell knows?

That was the same feeling that I got from it, even when I took off my maize rimmed glasses and watched it. He talks about how Denard's going to win the heisman and is the best qb in the land, and says that he's best friends with Devin and that they talk all the time (does anyone know if that's true?). He also had a lot more Michigan gear than just the USC hat he had. The interviewer makes the video though, imagine if he had done The Decision.

That's why this video comes across as odd, in parts of the Michigan video he isn't joking around, whereas the USC video seems completely sarcastic, unless he is the one person in the world that thinks Lane Kiffin is the best coach. Cheers to analyzing twitvids all night.

He is good friends with Devin, but I can't verify trhat they talk all the time.  I talked with him for about 30 minutes at Woodley's camp (took my boys) this summer.  It was shortly after he had "eliminated" us.  I wished him luck where ever he ended up at and he informed me that he was still talking with the coaches.  He asked me about where I thought the Michigan program was headed and I told him.  He seemed to think I was being a little overzealous with an 8-4 prediction (before TWoolf went down) and it was obvious he didn't care all that much for Tate.  Though Sam Webb said Arnett gave Tate props after this weekend on the Recruiting Roundup this morning.

He's a pretty good kid and was putting in work to get his grades up.  His senior year wasn't the greatest as teams keyed on him and the talent surrounding him wasn't great.  They went 1-8 and he ended up at QB towards the end of the year.

FWIW, I didn't solicit the information about him still talking with the coaches it just came out of his mouth.  It made me feel as if he wanted to go to Michigan, but didn't think the offense suited his skills.  I think Saturday opened his eyes some, but I still don't think he'll come here (to far behind to catch up in that short of a period).  We'll know for sure tomorrow night.  Being an in state kid it would a nice get.

He talks about the opportunity for him to wear the #1 jersey, go ALL IN, and play with Devin Gardner. Take it FWIW, but there seems to be a good chance that he could wind up blue tomorrow.
