Army v. Navy Game Thread
Go Navy! Beat Army! A Notre Dame administrator said something in the middle of ND's long winning streak over Navy that perfectly says what I think about Navy's streak over Army: I want them to win one and break the streak sometime, just not this year.
Looking forward to watching this one. Go USA!!! (Ricky Stanzi style)
PS. How is Gary Danielson going to contain himself without an SEC team to slobber over for 3 hours.
Could not agree with you more
Why has Navy been so much more sucessful these past few years? It would seem both academies would have pretty much the same institutional advantages and disadvatnages, yet Navy consistantly has an above average FBS team and Army consistently is 2-9. Are Paul Johnson and Ken Nimatololo (sp?) just that much better than whatever string of coaches Army has run through?
Better athletes. Also, once you graduate statistically Army officers face danger more often than a Navy officer so harder to sell West Point to parents.
Navy is more lenient on things like weight standards for linemen and is (supposedly) more lenient on football admissions.
I don't know how true the last one is, but the first one is very true--even according to Naval Academy grads.
Looks like all the Army players seem to be named "West Point". Navy players have actual last names
Once upon a time I read a quote from a Nike rep, something to the effect of "the service academies are the ultimate teams so we put something other than the names on the back to emphasize that." Which I thought was a little ironic since a servicemember in uniform always has a nametag.
I wish Michigan didn't have names on the back of the uniforms. I bet everyone would know a lot more players' uniform numbers, and I think it looks classier.
I think the players have earned the right to have their names on the uniform. The practice jerseys - and the replicas they sell - are nameless. A jersey with your name on it is the real deal. It's a nice extra bit of recognition.
Also, if I'm watching a game that doesn't involve my own team, nameless jerseys are really annoying. It'd be one thing to memorize our players' numbers, but I'm not going to do that for every team.
I love watching these games cause it's like watching football circa 1951 except in high-def:
1. No passing
2. No field goal kicking
3. Single wing offenses
All we need is for the head coach to like up a smoke on the sidelines and we've time-travelled.
Quiet. Delaney is lining up your post as a reason to invite Ga Tech to the B1G
Hopefully this will be a good game... Great rivalry!
Danielson already sounds like he doesn't want to be there.
ESS EEE CEE Superiority (c) reference by Danielson. It took him an entire 6:39 to bring it up. Drink!
the fact that Danielson even bothered to bring up the sec in this game is just sickening...Gary how about you just call the game and enjoy it like the rest of us.
I was lucky enough to go to the Army Navy game last year. If you are a college football fan You should see this game live at some point in your life.
although they've been lucky enough to recover three of them.
Barf. Quit fumbling the ball or up down go's for everyone
Dp smut smut smut
Danielson has Bama on the mind.
He could be announcing a hockey game and would find a way to bring up the SEC.
I mean submarines are pretty sweet so I don't want to be critical, but that graphic was...
TD Army!!
Far from a football expert and even less a triple option expert, but the Navy quarterback looks like he can throw quite well, it seems a waste to not at least incorporate that dimension a bit more.
But can the receivers catch the ball at least regularly? Won't do much good if the QB gets it there but all the WR can do is chop block.
Navy's fullback is a beast.
10-10 at the half. Army ends it with a FG.
Come on, guys...you're better than that.
Sweet kick, too. Good game so far, looking forward to the 2nd half.
I guess I should cheer for Navy to win considering my two brothers in the Navy...but man, I really want to see Army end a decade long losing streak. Hopefully they can pull it out today.
My brother-in-law is in the Navy also, so I kinda feel the same way you do. I think I want to see Army win because a certain team I cheer for was on a long losing streak of a rivalry recently.
I have family ties to the Navy, so I generally root for them in this game, but at this point it's hard not to root for the underdog.
"Even against the SEC." DRINK
$1000 per school, Red Lobster? I had never listened closely to that until now. Jesus, that is a garbage amount of money; that must be the cheapest national tv add time anyone can buy.
Gary Danielson is beside himself. How DARE two 12-0 teams make it to the BCS over an 11-1 team?
Yea he's terrible.
So is Army trying to break their own hearts? Geez, they're so close to putting this away, but they just can't do it.
Come on Army. Hang on here boys
Navy attacking through the air! Come on Army!
What a kick in the nuts for Army.
Clutch drive by the Middies.
This may be Army's only shot to beat Navy's QB...this kid is going to be a royal pain in their ass for the next 3 years.
Whelp. No wonder Army has wone like 2 games with these kind of critical breakdowns at key times. Maybe still time for a last minute game winning drive...
God Almighty, Danielson is more grating than normal. He loves hearing himself speak.
Shut up........pleeeeeeeze.
I can't stand how he says "unblocked" like it's "onblocked." Very grating.
Someone needs to invent a technology that allows you to mute a single announcer while keeping the sound on.
And I think this game has also confirmed that referees just don't throw any flags for early movement/illegal motion against the service acadamies
Are all the people in uniform in the stands active-duty personnel, or are they current students in the two academies?
Students for the most part. .
If you're referring to the large mass of gray on one side and the large mass of navy blue on the other, those are the cadets and middies. There might be active-duty types elsewhere.
send Cadets/Midshipmen to the game. The big blocks of uniforms you're seeing are current academy students (they wear different uniforms than standard Army or Navy/Marine Corps). Random people in the stands in uniform would presumably be regular active duty troops.
Thanks. I knew they're not wearing normal military uniforms, but I was wondering if some of them were simply graduates wearing their old uniforms for the occasion, or if they were all students.
No active-duty officer would be caught dead in his cadet/middie stuff. Against regs and highly unprofessional.
edit: a Navy officer could get away with it because the Navy uniforms are the same, just with different insignia. Can't say for sure but I think the gray Army coats are cadet-only.
Air Force and Naval Academies wear regulation uniforms for the most part. West Points are completely different from Active Duty Army. Echo the point about active duty officers not being caught dead in cadet gear, just would never happen.
Wow Army should have been throwing all game
Come on Army you can do this!!
Great game!
/facepalm....
OMG Army...
This is excrutiating for Army fans. Soooo close to breaking the last few plays...
jeez feel bad for the army team.
Glad for the hometown Middies, but what a terrible way to lose.
That being said, 12 years in a row!
Oh man. I mean, go Navy, but that just sucks.
What a cryin shame. I was really pulling for the Black Knights.
And what's worse is we have to listen to Danielson pontificate. That guy could mess up a train wreck.
"I don't root for anybody" - GD
Bahahahahaha
Oh that's funny.
What a shame. This game was headed for an incredible finish.
That's just a terrible way to end the game. Terrible, terrible terrible.
Damn! Someone needs to find the voodoo doll that Navy has been using and burn it. At some point Navy's luck has to run out.
Gotta feel for Steelman and it's going to be tough to beat Navy in the next few years with that young QB they have.
Damn.....I don't have any ties to either Army or Navy, but I wanted Army to win. A 10 year drought is too long for one of the greatest rivalries in football.
Army beat itself tonight. They had opportunities but just couldn't capitalize. Its unfortunate, but that's football.
Yea, they'd have been lining up for the winning kick had they not missed the one on their previous possession.
I don't have any ties either but I feel horrible for Army's QB.
This all being said, I'm dying to go to an Army-Navy game with my Dad one year. The tradition and pageantry of this game is unparalleled. Does anyone know from previous experience how easy it is to get tickets, or more importantly, how expensive it is?
Boy, I hope CBS doesn't go and try and find Steelman for an interview. It seems like the sort of dick thing a network would do.
Geeze they could have left the camera off the kid for a second at least.
wow the speaker at the linc is awful
3 years in a row we beat ourselves. Embarrassing.
CBS needs to stop showing Steelman every 10seconds. The dude is obviously taking it hard, stop showing it on national tv.
Dang... I wanted Army to break the streak. Truely a crappy way to lose the game. Really felt like Army had the momentum and were gonna score that last drive until they fumbled. Can't fumble the ball that much...
Heartache for Army ( I was rooting for them), but one can't deny that those who tuned in witnessed a classic CFB battle.
Next up, Bowl season!
11 in a row! Go Mids!
