Army Navy Game Uniforms (not really terrible)
Saw that Nike released the Army Navy Game Uniforms and thought that it was worth a share.
[Ed-S: changed link to original source, not non-sourcing Blecher Report. (sic) (yes Brian I sic'ed myself there are times when it is appropriate to do that). Also college football isn't OT. Also removed unnecessary jingoism since it was provoking political discussion.]

I dig 'em. Navy's uniforms are pretty cool. A touch of custom but still classy.

some reference to the military. Also, the military hasn't fought for freedom in 230 years.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:08 PM ^
Not necessarily true. If America didn't get involved in WW2 you think Germany and Japan would've just stopped after controlling the eastern hemisphere? They would've came after us and the rest of the world. Just saying... proceed with uni talk.
November 25th, 2013 at 6:32 PM ^
Yes, I am sure they would've sailed across the Pacific and the Atlantic to fight against fortified beaches. Yes, that sounds like a smart and wonderfully adept choice to make.

Hitler wasn't too good at making "smart and wonderfully adept choices", see: Russia

Always your agreeable self.
I happen to agree that jingoistic references to "freedom" are shoved down our throat, sans sugar, on a regular basis. Saying that the military hasn't fought for freedom in 230 years, however, is only true in a very technical and arbitrary sense.
I happen to think the the Industrial/Defense Complex is the greatest threat to freedom in the world, with some significant competition by the private prison industry/war on drugs. That said, all of this is politics and probably not really appropriate here. More than that, however, attempts at pissing people off really aren't necessary at this point, given the state of UM football at the moment.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:26 PM ^
It is a truism: If you bring reason to any discussion of the US military's aims and high rhetoric, you will likely piss the majority of people off.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:49 PM ^
It was an unnecessary statement.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:56 PM ^
I feel ya'. We're all there.
November 25th, 2013 at 6:27 PM ^
OK. No problem. It happens.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:22 PM ^
True, this idea that our "freedom" is under constant threat is overstated, to put it very mildly.
November 25th, 2013 at 5:51 PM ^
My sentiments exactly. Get your imperial stormtroopers outta my football already.
*Obvious caveat that the military academies can put as much military as they want into their games. I just don't see why it has to be all over every other game.
November 25th, 2013 at 9:10 PM ^
Well, it has fought for the freedom of the oppressed and ambushed (if only a couple times) about 70 years ago.
But yeah, agree completely.
I have completely gotten tired of the "Rah Rah USA" aspect of sports. They are not connected. And I know there are many people who believe that the message it spreads only increases a mindset that is not logical/accurate/productive... or something. I've been trying to make this as non-political as possible. Did I fail?
November 25th, 2013 at 10:26 PM ^
The US military hasn't fought for freedom in 230 years? South Koreans would beg to differ with you on that one (and many North Koreans I suspect)
November 25th, 2013 at 4:05 PM ^
In case anyone cares the flags say "Beat Army".
November 25th, 2013 at 4:40 PM ^
I noticed that too. It was clever.

Informative.

The glove thing with the logo is so 2008. Next please.

This is one of the more enjoyable football games to watch every year, even putting all of the service academy stuff aside. I love that this game gets prime billing treatment on what would otherwise be a pretty boring Saturday.

I like these too. For once it seems like they got them right.
Isnt it odd they use somewhat restraint for Army/Navy and go completely over the top for Northwestern of all teams?

Needz moar camelflage.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:24 PM ^
...approve. FWIW.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:25 PM ^
I think I liked the Army-Navy game better when they wore traditional uniforms. What game in the country is more traditional? I'll admit to actually liking the blue and gold pattern on the Navy helmet.... but the Beat Army flags on the back ruin it.
And for once I agree with Wolverines Dominate Gnarly Face - the glovezz thing is over and done with.
Finally I was never sure why I was supposed to care about what it said inside the uniforms where you can't see 'em. Sure, put all sorts of stuff on there to inspire the players, but I'll never see it so I can't really get too hyped up about it.
November 25th, 2013 at 4:32 PM ^
What if they go all Bandi Chastain in the corner of the endzone? You didn't think of that, but Nike did!

these are pretty cool. I might actually watch the game for a couple minutes to see the uniforms, then promptly change the channel again. Isn't Lifetime playing all Christmas movies now?

Go Mids, Beat Army
November 25th, 2013 at 5:07 PM ^
Why can't we get alternates as cool as these? I think a "chrome" look to the helmets would be sweet.
November 25th, 2013 at 5:17 PM ^
I'd like to see what our helmets would look like with this texture...Texas A&M has it, Minnesota has it. I really like it, it's like a graphite. It's not gloss, metallic, or matte.
I think our helmets would look really good in it. I hate the shiny christmas balls, I don't like the flat matte, the gloss is starting to look dated.

Even with the narrowest possible definition, it would be 199 years, not 230. You seem to forget that the War of 1812 was fought largely on US soil, with major engagements in places such as Baltimore, New Orleans, Lake Erie, and with DC burned to the ground.
But I don't know how you can say that the Civil War wasn't a fight for freedom. Although there was no "outside" force threating the country, the entire fabric of the nation was at stake.
And while it's easy to dismiss World War II with the notion that neither Germany nor Japan would cross the ocean to assault us, keep in mind that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and declared war on us. Germany probably wouldn't have crossed the Atlantic, nor likely could it have, but Japan was fighting on only one front, and that was the Pacific. They took control of islands nearly as far east as Alaska (the Aleutians), and I have little doubt that the war would have eventually stretched to the continental US had we not stopped their progress in the Pacific campaign.
So while you might not like the frequent displays, as is your right, it's quite disengenuous to suggest that the military hasn't protected your freedom since the Revolution...

In other words, college football... with its constant flag waving for a particular school, appeals to loyalty, the march of the heroes from the locker room to the stadium, marching bands moving in close formation, and support for an ever-growing athletic-industrial complex.

The parallels are striking. Thanks for pointing out the tribalism inherent in both. There are a couple significant differences, however:
As big as football programs have gotten, they don't cost $718 Billion a year.
On a bad day, an athlete suffers an ACL tear or concussion.
