Monken led Georgia Southern to the upset win over Florida, with the triple option attack gaining a record setting 429 yards rusning against the Florida defense.
does one normally change in response to success?
Great hire. I was hoping they would get him.
West Point is beautiful. A recruit has a decent paying job with great benefits out of college, and the wars are desolving. Now, it is time for Army to invest in its athlestics. Hopefully, this grunt can beat Navy and win 6-7 games a year.
If the wars are desolving...doesn't that make it more dangerous?
You should probably include some sort of explanation stating that you're making fun of his spelling of "dissolving." Or, I just did it for you.
It's 5am, I can't sleep, I'm watching this crappy Hawaii Bowl, and I've been refreshing this page for an hour waiting for someone to post something.
I guess Army picking up a head coach is better than nothing...
Good hire, but I must admit I thought they were going after one of Meyer's guys to run the spread. Guess Urban's questionable character possibly rubbing off on his assistants is enough to scare off Army...
In all seriousness though, this is a good hire and it will be a smooth transition with not having to change offenses and all. Guy is a proven winner and has an inside track on what Navy does with his connection to Paul Johnson and therefore Navy's current HC. Should make the games competitive again and hopefully the 12 year drought ends sooner rather than later. Go Army! Beat Navy!
"Guess Urban's questionable character possibly rubbing off on his assistants is enough to scare off Army..."
I wouldn't consider cheerleaders assistants. Maybe that's not what you were laughing about though.
Really solid hire. This guy has run the triple option effectively and regularly gone far in the FCS playoffs. In addition to beating Florida this past year, let's not forget that it was also his Georgia Southern team that ran for 300+ yards and put up 21 points on Alabama 2 years ago, a full touchdown better than any other team did against the Tide that year. I usually root for Navy in this rivalry, but it's been too lopsided for too long. Time for Army to make it competitive again, and Monken is just the guy to do it!
Here is the story in USA Today - (LINK)
Monken was 38-16 at Georgia Southern and helped guide them through their transition to being a Division I program. Army seems upbeat about him:
"We want a successful head coach who understands the challenges of working at a service academy, one who could help us win immediately, and one who understands the importance of West Point's mission. We found that in Jeff," athletic director Boo Corrigan said.
Corrigan also said there was quite a bit of general interest in the job as well.
Unless you're into winning big, seems like the service academies would be a great place to be a coach. Group of highly motivated and smart players who understand disipline and probably have very few off field issues.
Navy hired a GaSouthern coach and has been beating Army like a drum since. Guess Army figured it was worth a shot.
