WTF??

I turned it with under two minutes to play and UA down 13 I think. Dammit, you'd think I'd learn!

At least I hung in there for all of the UTL game.

Going into the game I had picked Arizona with 1 confidence point, but certain Nevada-based sports fans liked the Wildcats so much that I shot it up to like 30. I was sweating for most of the day.

He runs the spread option with a mobile quarterback. How cool would it be if Michigan had a mobile quarterback?!?! Michigan should give him a call!

I figured a decent number of MGoBloggers would like the news in it's own thread.  I didn't see another topic about the win.

Great start to bowl season

It was a pretty exciting finish. Epic meltdown by Nevada and laughable defense by both sides.

Fist Fight Amongst Teammates

Did anyone happen to see the fight that broke out between the Arizona players on the sidelines in the second quarter?  Apparently there was some heated discussion before one of the d-lineman (Hood?) threw a punch at one of the linebackers who then returned with punches before the two were broken up.  The linebacker was escorted to the locker room, but the lineman continued to play for a while before he was eventually sent back too.  I hate to see that amongst teammates.

Yeah I think the argument went like this...

DT:  "I deserve to get GERGS (or whover mediocre DC they have) beaver to the face."

LB:  "Shut the front door!"  "Did you see me on that play, I was turrible and deserve the beaver."

DT:  "What the freak man, there is no way that you were more turrible than I was, I have been letting guys right past me and that is why I get the honors of having beaver in my face."

LB:  "I had beaver in my face and it was your girl friends... last night."

DT:  "I got two beavers for you, why don't you say hello!"  (Proceeded to punch LB in the face)

Score a ton of points against craptastic competition. Check.

Unwatchable defense. Check.

Lack of overall discipline (2 az players got into a fistfight on the sideline). Check.

Sounds about right.

can't believe that happened..

I was watching that game but changed to the end of the IU/Butler game when I figured there was no chance.. guess that proves to me once and for all that I don't know a damn thing.

Must have been a crazy

Must have been a crazy ending, i changed the chanel when  Arazona fumbled and a guy picked it up and got out of bounds to stop the clock down 13 with about a minute and a half to go at about their own 30.

Changed back and they were on the 2 going infor the tie.  Im guessing a long bomb and an onside kick? Good for RR but Arizona looked pretty bad tbh. Should be interesting once he gets some of his own players in there.

Nice idea, but RichRod didn't understand the OSU and MSU rivalries. He appeared to have a good grasp of the ND rivalry, though.

Jeff Casteel is Arizona's DC,

Jeff Casteel is Arizona's DC, and a lot of people here seem to believe that he's Greg Mattison but good at coaching defense.  I'm interested to see what happens over the next few years, but here are the points surrendered by Arizona this year during the Pac-12 schedule (and bowl):

Oregon - 49
Oregon State - 38
Stanford - 54 (OT)
Washington - 17
USC - 36
UCLA - 66
Colorado - 31
Utah - 24
Arizona State - 41
Nevada - 48

Agreed.  In fact, even with a few more shaky years, I don't think he can acquire that status.  I'm just a little skeptical of the narrative that everything would have been fine had we hired Casteel as DC a few years ago.

I don't think it's entirely wrong

Three years of a competent defensive coordinator running his own defense would have certainly worked better than what we actually saw. It would almost certainly have resulted in some additional wins.

Having said that, I don't know that it would have been enough to save Rodriguez.

No

No one here -- even the RR defenders -- has said Casteel is "Mattison but good at coaching defense."  Casteel had a pretty good track record at WVU  This is his first year at Arizona, and they apparently were starting five walk-ons on defense at times this year.

Everyone here, including the RR defenders, loves Mattison.

What many folks don't love, however, is that we have gotten a WCO re-tread who has a history of regressing offenses at each of his stops.  (Yes, we hired Gerry DiNardo's OC.  Glad we saved that money and kept our Manball philosophy alive.)  This was the first time in over forty years we had three games in which we didn't score a touchdown, if I remember correctly.  And that was with a senior Denard Robinson, who holds many of the all-time leading Michigan offensive records.

Look at what RR's first year Arizona team did offensively, and then look at our slide in all offensive categories from 2010 to 2011 to 2012.  If you do not understand why some of us still wish we had a RR offense (or a Sonny Dykes or Kliff Kingsbury or Chip Kelly, etc. offense), instead of Big Al's, I don't know what to tell you.  By what metric is Al Borges doing well here and showing progression?  By what metrics did he show progression at Auburn, Cal, Indiana?

Since you appear to like numbers, here are a few:

National Rank in Total Offense (Michigan)

2010: 8

2011: 42

2012: 81

National Rank in First Downs/Game (Michigan)

2010: 22

2011: 50

2012: 99

It appears we are sacrificing a lot just for a few quips at post-game press conferences.  I suppose it all depends on what you value more.

So do you have an essay on this

That you just cut and paste and rearrange for your exact same post you add when you come on once every week? Or do you actually have a thought about ANYTHING else concerning Michigan athletics? Because if so you haven't posted it for months.

I think it's kind of amusing

I think it's kind of amusing that he decided to post it on this particular thread, since the implication of his post is that maximizing your team's advantage in first downs is a primary goal of a coordinator and Arizona broke the all-time bowl record today by giving up 40 first downs.

Because a defense cordinator is always able to turn

around a bad defense in one year right? Yes, Mattison was able to do that here, but that is the exception to the rule, particurly with a complex defense like the 3-3-5. I don't think many people believe that Casteel  is on the same level as Mattison, but he is a DC with a very solid track record running the 3-3-5. I wouldn't write him off after one year, particulry when the defense he inherited was not talented and not any good the year before.

That fool still can't get a

That fool still can't get a good defense together. You saw what happened with that "high powered offense" against a good team in oregon. 49-0.

Thank God for Brady Hoke and staff.

lots of comments about

the defense.

Arizona was one of the worst defensive teams in the country last year, so Casteel inherited a terrible defense to begin with.

He also inherited terrible

He also inherited terrible position coaches and a coach that seems to be apathetic about defense in general.

Ahhhh.......

Michigan is 8-4 with a game to go.  Arizona is complete at 8-5.  Not sure I am following your math.

RichRod's offense is exciting, but when Michigan was getting embarrassed by every decent team they played, not my definition of exciting.  I still follow him, but I think that Arizona is a much better fit.  I wish him the best of luck.

RR would be a good fit anywhere...

...if he would get a credible D-Coordinator and just left the defense alone.  I don't know if Martin or Brandon would've been willing to pay top $$$ for Casteel or another coordinator, like they did for Mattison, but I've wondered what would the outcome would've been if Casteel was offered money similar to Mattison.

WVU and arizona's defenses

WVU and arizona's defenses haven't been impressive. Our best D year of that mini-era was probably 08.

Perhaps the perfect answer. Good job

RR, and it was almost an immediate consensus, was not ¨the ideal fit¨for the arrogance that the M nation seems to possess. There is no doubt in my mind, nor any of the other coaches around the country I have spoken to in various seminars that he would have had M at the level of OR within a short five year period, and his record suggest the same.  However, he was not welcomed here despite his accomplishments and that is so fucking sad. He was attacked from all points by the press, a dying breed -Thank you  Jesus- to former players that have not a clue.

When u are welcomed in the manner he was, I was surprised that he even wanted to hang on to his job in AA, but that is the type of man RR is. When he takes on a project, and it was just that in the manner of the way LC, who basically took off the last three years of his contract, i.e., recruiting, etc., left it . Not many recall he was the cry baby son of a bitch that went to Bo crying as to, ¨¨I just don¨t think I am the man for the job,¨¨ after his early meiocre seasons. He, more than anyone else, sabotaged the program, with a close second to Rosenfuck who wanted him gone the moment he arrived.

If, like Canham, Martin would have stayed, RR would still be our coach and we would be singing his gllory. Bo was greeted in roughly the same manner, but  Don stuck by the man because that is what a contract was all about back in the day. Fats Domino wants things his way  and I do agree with  the hiring of Hoke because the two, he and RR could not have co-existed due to Fats¨immense ego and RR merely wanting to conclude the rebuilding, yes it was necessary, to which he was appointed in the first place.rady is a great hire. There can be no doubt about that. However, anyone that portends, in even the most minute manner they have a grasp of football, that says RR is not a great  coach is, imo, and I stand not alone, they  are as big as fools as everyone in the bar suggests the moment they  leave. LC inherited a great program, had one great season, which always suggest the ball bounces your way, and then was simply a good caretaker. That is all he is, all he will ever be and to those that pay homage to the man, you are as foolish as he.

I wasn't joking...

...even if I did get the opponent wrong.

Here, we'll be busy analyzing the 49 points Arizona will have put up on New Mexico in the Gildan Bowl.

It was only October--what do you expect?

Bloodbath....

Bloodbath shootout narrow victory against a vastly inferior institution (SEE: UMass, Indiana, Illinois).  Sounds about right.

wolfman....

Come on dude.  The man signed 3 offensive linemen combined in a 2 year span and had the worst special team's play college football had ever seen.  The man had some talent, and given the void of special teams a defense, there were obviously some gaping deficiencies in his coaching.

poor alumni support does not breed 4-13 FG and giving up 65 points to Illinois.

You have some solid arguments, but get real.  He did a terrible terrible job in areas outside of factors that could be affected by everybody in the community not coddling his balls.
