Are you worried about Signing Day?

Submitted by Decatur Jack on

I'm not worried about Signing Day, and here's why.

We got "HOWBOW." You know who I'm talking about.

So even if we whiff on every guy that we're currently in play for -- Chris Clark, Mike Weber, Iman Marshall, etc. -- I'm still not going to freak out. Some of you may freak out. Some may look at this class that could very well end up with only 10 kids and say "But... we... Harbaugh... how can we not get anyone? It's... Harbaugh!"

And to those of you who say that and are disappointed come this time tomorrow, I was never expecting much of this class. The more important thing was getting the right coach, and we did. Everyone made such a big deal about Hoke's first class, but that one, like every coach's first class when he only has a month to do stuff, is going to mainly be patchwork. It's going to be cobbled together.

"But what about Urban Meyer? He came in and flipped a ton of five-stars on his first Signing Day!" Meyer was also hired the day after the Michigan game and was allowed to recruit with a recruiting staff already in place while he hired his coaches. Harbaugh was hired more than a month after the Ohio State game and spent the first weeks recruiting by himself and pulling together a staff. Meyer's entrance to Columbus was an anamoly different from even typical anamolies.

To me, the bigger deal is going to be Signing Day 2016, Harbaugh's first official class where he has a whole year to establish relationships with recruits. If he doesn't at least pull in a top ten class (top five?), then yeah I'm going to be disappointed. But this year? I'm honestly happy with whoever he gets. We aren't quite as desperate for talent across the board.

So those are my thoughts on the eve before Signing day. Neg all you want if you feel this was pointless (welcome to the internet), but I posted it because I see some folks out there who are getting a little anxious about signing day. Which makes sense, being sports fans. Still, regardless of what happens tomorrow, enjoy the ride. Surprise star signings or no surprise star signings.

Because one guy who for sure is signed... is HOWBOW.

So GO HOWBOW, and Go Blue

I feel terrible about it. We don't seem to be leading for really anyone. Not to be a huge downer but I think most of these announcements are for show and they will stay with their commitment. We will get a couple kids but I don't think it will be pretty

After our year… we really have no business even being in the National Signing Day discussion. Our football recruiting talk isn't suppose to be this good right now. Some people need to wake up and grab some perspective. I’ll be disappointed if we miss out on certain recruits, but I’ll quickly move on from any down feelings. I understand we’re fortunate that Harbaugh has some top kids even considering us this late in the process. So I’ll just hope for the best in this class, and look forward to 2016.

I would be lying if I said I wouldn't be disappointed if we picked up 0 recruits tomorrow. Not to mention it would just be more fodder for our rivals. Ugh...

That being said...

I'm expecting anywhere from 1-3 recruits tomorrow. That would be fantastic.

Any more would just be gravy.

I'm ready to get it over. After this is done I am going to take a bit of a break from wolverine madness.  I havent stopped repeatedly checking UM sites since the End of November... I want my life back, lol.

I'm worried that when I wake up my car is going to be a bitch to unbury from the snow that's currently falling.

Not sure why everyone is so freaked out over signing day. We're obviously going to pick some guys up tomorrow. How many, I don't know. But let's not forget who is coaching this team.

I just can't wait to flaunt it in RCMBers and Bucknutters but particularly RCMBers faces who've been saying Harbaugh can't recruit. I think we have two 4 stars down in Wheatley and Jefferson but I'm hoping for something like commitapalooza to let everyone know who the new sheriff in town is.

yeah but getting good recruits translates to wins on the field and we don't have a game until late August so I'll take the good news where we can get it and our rivals have been all over the Harbaugh can't recruit bullshit for the past 2-3 weeks so I'd like to see him absolutely kill it tomorrow.

With good coaching. Like I said we have the coaching now we need to get the recruits. How did Saban build Alabama back from the ashes? It was coaching and recruiting. I'm not waiting 7 months for the last week of August to be happy if Harbaugh pulls in a stellar recruiting class in such short notice. It happens in chunks.

You may want to ease off the flaunting until the on - field results actually change.  If tomorrow is a good day, that's awesome and we can be happy, but let's keep the celebration in the family.  Put another way,do you really think any Spartan fan will be concerned given that michigan has consistently out recruited them with no benefit for seven years? They'll  laugh at you, which will likely make you even angrier.

Their tune will change no doubt to look at us outrecruiting Harbaugh to recruiting doesn't matter anyways and I don't care about that. You've got to start somewhere. For Alabama the first step was getting Saban in 07 the second step was getting an all star staff the 3rd step was killing it on signing day and the 4rd step was transforming the team through spring and fall practice. We've accomplished the first two steps on the Alabama model. We're on # 3 now and in 22 days we'll be on # 4.

I agree with you, Michigan is on the right track again. Just think some humility would be nice until the February victories translate into October victories. I understand the pent up frustration and desire to give MSU fans shit, but I promise you it will backfire when they bring it around to the head to head record since 2008. Until that changes, any shit our fan base talks is pretty hollow.

Regardless of how much of a dick Mort is, he's proven to be no slouch as a coach, with a college track record as good or better than Jims.. If you take off the blinders, you would realize it's ridiculous to think MSU will simply fold because Harbaugh is in town.  It's going to be war, but at least now we have a fighting chance for the first time in 7 years.

The Rose Bowl is an interesting place to mark as the start of Dantonio's success at MSU. I would have chosen the 2010 season (B1G Co-Champs, school record 11-wins season, and beating their 2 biggest rivals: ND and UM), which would have also been Dantonio's 4th season at MSU.

Regardless, the past 5 seasons have been incredibly successful for Dantonio:

2010: 11-2 + Capital Bowl (L)

2011: 11-3 + Outback Bowl (W)

2012: 7-6 + BBW Bowl (W)

2013: 13-1 + Rose Bowl (W)

2014: 11-2 + Cotton Bowl (W)

That's five straight bowl appearances, four 11+ wins seasons, three victories in major/"New Year's Six" bowl games, and two Top-5 finishes. Really the only thing missing to make it a complete resume is a National Championship. What he has is enough that I've seen many analysts put Dantonio in contention as the 3rd best coach in CFB with Jimbo or Gary Patterson.

Bottomline being that I don't think the program Dantonio has built in the last 7 years will fall down without a dogfight.

Harbaugh's already done more than I expected flipping the QB of the future from Texas.  Honestly I'm not sure any other coach in the country could've pulled off what he did with so little time to work with.  Not worried at all, what will happen will happen and we'll be ok.

Oh look, it's the guy who felt obligated last night to make a thread about him leaving this site to go back "home" to TomBeaverland aka Scout.

That lasted as long as I thought it would. What's the matter? Did the message board censoring any mention of the words "rivals" or "mgoblog" annoy you? Crave freedom?

I was a little worried. But Jefferson seems to be trending towards is. Higdon seems to be trending towards us. I don't really see Wheatley not going Blue. We could realistically pick up Adams as well. All it takes is a surprise flip of Weber (I'm 50/50 on our chances) or a Clark/Marshall commit and I'm ecstatic. Worst case, we give Oliver a scholarship as a FB. Which I assume he would gladly accept. Aside from that, I look at the facts. It's a small class and Harbaugh had almost no time. He did wonders at Stanford with worse (recruit ranking wise) so I'm not too worried about that either. Next years class should be a dandy though... And yes, I did use dandy in a sentence.

With the chance of another couple inches of snow falling tonight, in addition to the foot we got this past weekend, the roads could be a mess.  I'm worried that the traffic is going to be slow, slippery and full of people driving like really old, ulta cautious folks.

And then the parking!  Good luck finding a place to park.  Most of the street parking is inaccessible which means mayhem.  Cars everywhere.
