Can't they both lose?
Then I want ND to win 3-0 b/c I want Weis to stay around (just like you said).
Can't they both lose?
Then I want ND to win 3-0 b/c I want Weis to stay around (just like you said).
Yeah, I know what you mean. There's something so satisfying about beating someone so unlikeable. And so fat.
...he's big boned.
ND for sure
The fewer games ND drops this season.. the better that win looks for us.. MSU is already tainted by a loss to Central, so ND winning clearly benefits us much more than MSU winning..
And I only root for B10 teams post-season.. During the season..... meh.. I'm pretty indifferent..
But GOD do I hate Weis! I guess I'd like to see ND win but MSU plow Charlie on the sideline like in our game last year.
I agree. Weis is terrible, but for me, somehow, someway Dantonio found a way to be just slightly worse. So I'm voting for ND to win.
Since I have to listen to my Spartan friends brag about how great they are more often than my ND friends (btw I don't have any ND friends - how could you) I want ND to win. Makes us look better and I don't really care how bad MSU looks. Too bad we don't have to make these kind of choices during BB season. Maybe soon.
This is like the old ethics question: do I save the train full of people or the little girl?
Part of me wants ND because that makes our win look better if ND is "for realz". OTOH, I hate ND... but I hate MSU. More specifically, I can't stand Charlie Weis or Mark Dantonio.
BUT I'll cheer for ND mostly because I don't want Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly replacing him.
Tornado > MSU > ND
I never root for Notre Dame unless it would give us a chance at the national title. Or they're playing State in hockey.
To hell with Notre Dame!
Loose pack of wild, hungry wolverines > tornado.
I definitely pick ND over MSU, however. I hate Charlie Weis but I want him to stick around because I think he is a disaster of a coach and the longer he's there, the better inherent advantage we have against ND. I don't want enough success that he can actually keep recruiting amazing talent since that's the one thing he does well and good players are obviously helpful to the next coach if/when he gets replaced. But the longer Charlie is in South Bend, the better it is for us.
I similarly hate Mark Dantonio but want him to stay at MSU. That gets less credit than keeping Weis, however, since a) he's not on the brink of getting fired and b) MSU is much (much!) less likely to replace him someone good when he leaves.
I'm holding out hope that a rift in the space-time continuum will cause the entire stadium to just disappear.
I think Weis is too big to fit in a rift in the space-time continuum.
And yet, paradoxically, one more chicken leg would raise his mass enough to spontaneously compress into a singularity, thus causing said rift in the space time continuum.
Obviously the solution is a perfectly-timed KFC delivery, just as the Notre Dame band takes the field.
Actually, Charlie's considerable mass might actually distort space-time enough to create a rift. Passing through the rift probably leads to that magical universe where Jimmah has won 2 going on 4 Heismans.
Normally Id root for ND in this game.... but after this week, and how Charlie cried like a baby...and how the majority of their fan base cried like a baby...and all the finger pointing, excuse making, blaming the officials and accusing Michigan of playing dirty... the overwhelming sense of 'entitlement' that those jackasses from ND have.... makes me very uneasy about ever rooting for them again.
Ill just take a neutral stance on this game now...
My opinion is tainted by a wager I made with an MSU fan that UofM would be ranked higher at the end of the year. On a related note, the only contact we've had this past week was him texting me "Fuck You, I'm gonna go drink until I forget its football season."
To be fair, I would have done the same thing in his position.
1. It makes us look better
2. If msu wins at south bend and its an easy win they wont shutup and we look worse
3. msu needs put in their place as little brother, so the worse the season the more people realize last year was a fluke.
4. Screw big ten preception believe I used to be all for big ten teams winning but once we were bottom of the big ten last year and every b10 team telling us how much we suck and will never be good again, especially msu or osu they can shove it, every other b10 member can win their games and i want them to do good but I hope osu and msu lose every game from now on.
This one is tough because I really don't care much one way or the other. Normally I would pull for Sparty over ND, but ND has been so bad lately and Sparty's head has gotten way bigger than normal because of last year, so I think I would like to see Sparty go 1-2 to begin the season. Their next game is at Wisconsin and then they play us, so conceivably they could start the season 1-4. Yeah, I'm definitely pulling for ND.
ND for sure... not only does it make us look better if they start winning, but I HATE STATE... all my annoying ass friends go there.. they think because they had one good season that they are the shit now
I am all in for the Big Ten officials who are going to work the game.
The more ND wins, the better we look (assuming/hoping we continue to win); however, there's no reason to give MSU any more to be pissed about come time our game with them.
But since that's unlikely I will be "rooting" for ND. All of the crap since the game has made it harder to pull for ND, but I remember that it's MSU on the other side and suddenly I have no problem doing it.
Basically, an ND win makes our win look better, helps Weis' job security, and better yet gives MSU its second straight loss. If they're not squirming already after losing to CMU, a beatdown at the hands of ND would certainly accomplish that.
I hate Sparty more and hope they lose to the Domers so our upset looks legit.
Should State win, after losing to CMU, wins over both teams become relatively weak in the eyes of the nation. Should State lose, the ND win continues to look good, and hopefully the nation will internalize last week as a good win before ND gets pounded by USC.
We wanna keep the amorphous blob around right?
Notre Dame, save for the fact that I have a ton of family and friends who went to MSU, and I can't stand Sparty and their fans. Pretty much hate everything about them.
They have to come crashing back down to reality and recognize that the collapse is inevitable.
Fuck Notre Dame.
for Hitler in a slapfight with Jeffrey Dahmer.
+1 because slapfights are awesome.
I think Dahmer has a few inches of reach on Adolph. My $$ is on the cannibal.
I will take ND in this one due to the fact that it helps UM since we beat them. Also I would like to see sparty implode which started this past week and another loss would open the flood gates IMO.
Normally I'd root for ND for one of the same reasons others mention here, that of maintaining ND's standing for our SOS by year's end. Since that's more important when we've got a legit chance to contend for the NC, I'm more concerned about our game up at MSU in a few weeks. If Sparty puts a 35-10 licking on ND (however unlikely that is), they'll be right back to their overrated opinion of themselves, and they'll be thinking that playing us will be easy. We can use every advantage we can get playing them in EL.
I want Charlie Weis coaching there as long as possible. I don't want them firing him and then getting someone like Brian Kelly, cause then they might actually be good.
I never root for any rivals. For me whatever happens, happens. It's really quite irrelevant moving forward.
There is simply no benefit to an MSU win, it simply establishes the fact that ND was questionable from the start, since MSU has lost to a MAC team and ND would hypothetically lose to MSU, which makes M suspect by default. On the other hand if ND wins, it makes ND somewhat credible by beating a team picked 3rd in the B10 by most analysts, which makes M's victory over ND all the more impressive.
MSU Win = M just beat 2 teams that are mediocre at best
ND Win = better national perception for M
any winning State does makes them look better, and since we are the top programs in the state, they less good rep they have, the better for us when it comes to recruiting.
I don't care what happens. I really don't.
then again I want our win to be validated. This is so tough. I really enjoy dr. lou sitting there with nothing to say last Saturday night knowing he could tout ND as playing for the MNC. I think I hate ND more and we will have the chznce to ruin little brother's season in a couple of weeks. So........
FUCK Notre Dame!
I am silently praying for a giant flux capacitor to put both programs back to 1955 and we never see either one again.
MSU by a billion
He's fat boned.
I'm pulling for MSU in this game and then hoping the ND can look good through the rest of their schedule, particularly when they play USC. If they can pull off that game (yeah it's a long shot...) then the SOS arguements are moot I think. Also, to be honest, I'm not so concerned about how our SOS looks. Just winning some games this year is enough to keep me happy. Next year I'll go back to caring about SOS and our ranking more.
I'm so sick of hearing people rag on the Big Ten, I'd like to see the whole conference do well in OOC games. I think it takes a lot more to improve the Big Ten's image than any one team's image.
I want Dantonio to be embarrassed on Saturday. Everything about that man rubs me the wrong way.
But wait, the same is 100% true for Weis. Charlie's existence is the bane of mine.
For the sheer fact that a win over an ND team that ends up with 9-10 wins will look very good on our resume and all the crap I took from MSU fans here at work, I will be "rooting" for ND.
This is the case of choosing the slightly less of two complete evils.
It'd be funny for State to have a John L. Smith style implosion for the rest of the year so I'm rooting for ND.
gets called back on a replay, because the runner's heel was out of bounds.
Shuts up ND.
Shuts up MSU.
Need Charlie to keep his job!
Better ND finish...better for us
With the huge love and expectations at the beginning of the year Sparty can be Sparty with losses against Central, ND, Wisc, Michigan and Illinois.
But if I have to pick one, ND 2-0 with sparty imploding taking a safety at the end of the game in dramatic fashion. Bobbled snap, cousins(sp?)running around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to get a throw off, only to fumble the ball out of the endzone.
The problem is, with ND's schedule they could run the table and end up playing in the MNC. How awful would December be having to listen to the media hype machine. I can't even think about it.
Your comment pretty much swayed me. Although losing to ND will give even more fuel to MSU to beat us, because our game will be all that they have left, I am not strong enough to handle the "ND is back and Weiss is God" meme that would circulate if ND ended up in the BCS Championship. Even the barest chance of that is too horrible to further contemplate.
but I will be rooting for ND. If Sparty wins and we are able to beat them on the road in a couple of weeks, it will not help our national respect as much. It will just be the same old Sparty. I do agree with the other's where if they both could lose that would be great.
Notre Lame will beat DanDumbio handily at least 3 scores
Not only, as others have said, would it make our win look better nationally, but it would also make me feel better about giving up 500 yards of offense to them, and even better about an awesome victory. If ND is say 7-5, the game is still awesome but it is less of a measuring stick for the program than it appeared at the time.
but in a low scoring, sloppy game, with no Jimmy TDs, only 1 rushing TD; lots of penalties, turnovers, you name it; pure ugliness that gets talked about how bad both looked all day.
I want fatso to be around, it makes our win look better and I have a large amount of hate in my body for Dumbtonio. That guy makes some of the dumbest comments (really, you wanted OSU to beat Michigan last year so you could NOT be b10 champs?...dumba*s!) and spartan fans eat 'em all up. it would also allow us to rub one of his own stupid comment back in his face (pride before the fall BS).
As much as I have never liked his on-field antics, Clausen was classy after the game waiting to talk with Tate. It makes it difficult for me to feel ill will towards him.
i cannot believe how many people root for ND over MSU. yikes.
While I agree with all the reasoning why an ND win would be better, I just hate them with such great passion. Really can't see myself cheering for either team. I will watch as a disinterested observer and what will be will be. Hey, somebody's gonna lose and that will make me happy.
that one of them is going to lose...
Well, it's looking like I will be on MSU +11, so I will be cheering for the Spartys to keep it within double digits. I really despise Notre Dame, so I suppose I want MSU to pull it out.
One thing I know......i will enjoy the meltdown at either place after their second straight loss.
Prediction: Jamie Mac leaves a smart ass comment at either the BGS or the Only Colors on Sunday morning.
What do you think of the line on Florida vs. Tennessee? I can't believe the o/u is only 52.5, seems like a sure thing.
ND, it will make last week's win that much better.
This week has made me want MSU to win on a horribly blown call, just to see what would happen on the ND blogs.
I have to think Dantonio and little brother at this point..plus every Notre Dame win validates our victory and strength of schedule, right up until CMU beat little brother..
Wow, this is a tough one. On one hand, you have Charlie Weiss, the only coach (maybe in football history) who is too fat to stand at his weekly press conferences, and the Savior in E.L., Dantonio. Both have class just oozing out of them with MD getting into a war of words in the media with Mike Hart. And Weiss has displayed his class (or lack thereof) on so many occasions, it is hard to pinpoint just one.
Is it wrong of me to hope the stadium implodes?
Seriously, I would normally root for the conference on a game like this but I cannot root for Sparty as long as Mike Valenti is on the air here in Detroit. I love it when he has to eat his words. I am also starting to grow a real disdain for Sparty fans in general so I hope they land at 1-2. Last year's 9-3 season was the perfect storm for them. It is laughable to think they will win more than 7 games without there go to guy (Ringer), their Senior QB (even though it is Brian Hoyer) and their leading sack guy.
Definite dislike ND more, but after all the crap I have received from MSU fans I will be rooting for ND
Put me down for ND. Hope they win the rest of their games. We have to play them every year for another 20+ years. When both teams are great, the rivalry is great. We also need ND to be good until the Big10 regains some respect around the nation.
How would it help the Big 10 regain respect around the nation, to have one of the Big 10's aspirational power programs, MSU, lose to an out of conference private Catholic school in northern Indiana?
MSU got beat my Central last week (we know Central is no pushover, but to the rest of the nation they're just a shitty MAC team). If MSU goes on to do well in the Big Ten this year that might even be a bad thing, as far as public perception goes. If it hadn't been for that loss I might have a different take on things. But the Big 10 is M, OSU and PSU. Some teams will have good years here and there, but lets not pretend MSU is on it's way to becoming a perennial NC contender, or making regular appearances in BCS bowls.
Besides, when I said "we" I meant Michigan. M needs ND to be good (as long as we beat them) because it will give "us" (Michigan) more credibility. The knock on OSU is that they cruise through the Big 10 because it's a shitty conference, and then proceed to get stomped by teams in other conferences (although they did put up a good fight against Texas and USC).
Like many on this post, I'm conflicted. If I had to pick one, it would be ND, but only by the slimmest of margins. Therefore, MSU 2-0, (I know -- I said ND by a slim margin, but since I'm conflicted, I'll let MSU win in my scenario).
Here's how I'd like it to go down:
After nearly 4 scoreless quarters, ND is facing 4th-and-24 from its own 1 yd line with 25 seconds left, no time-outs and 20 seconds on the play clock. Realizing that he needs to run a play and figuring he needs to burn the remaining time off the clock since MSU has 1 time-out left and could conceivably run a play, Charlie (the Offensive Guru) splits three wide and calls for a pass. Jimmah drops back to throw and faces pressure from MSU's defense. Trying to burn the remaining time off the clock, Jimmah runs around the back of the end zone trying not to get tackled, and runs into one of his own linemen. The balls pops loose, and after chasing it for what seems like an eternity, it bounces off Armando Allen's foot and goes out the back of the end zone for a safety. Time expires on the clock and MSU wins, 2-0.
Why does any ND win make us look better? I cannot, would not EVER root for Notre Dame to beat any team in the Big Ten. I don't think I'd root for Notre Dame to beat any team in the Pac 10.
I wouldn't root for Notre Dame to beat the Third Reich.
MSU will always be on our schedule; always one of our Big Ten rivals. Notre Dame is just a more-glamorous out-of-conference opponent. We're just one contract away from never playing them again.
I hope ND loses to MSU, Purdue, the Academies. Everybody. I hope ND loses its bowl game whenever they ever go to a bowl. I hope they lose their stadium, and Touchdown Jesus. I hope they lose their watches and their wallets.
I root for our big ten rivals MSU, and OSU, in football, approximately 364 days a year.
I usually root for OSU and MSU (when they're not playing UM) right up until kick-off. Then my senses return and I root for the other team. The only thing I like better than watching UM win is watching OSU, MSU and ND lose.
We play ND every year until 2031. I 'll be almost 50 when that contract expires. M-ND was once one of the biggest rivalries in college football. I want ND to be a power house again. I want that to be one of the biggest games of the season every year, with the whole nation watching. Most people outside of the Big Ten don't care about M vs MSU. M-MSU will never be as big as M-ND once was, and hopefully will be again.
Most people seem to be talking about perception. For me, I want proof that ND really is good and MSU, who we still have to play, is beatable (clearly they are since they lost to CMU). I want to see ND's offense look great because I want it to be true that they are, not that our defense sucks. I want it to be true that ND's defense is decent so that means our offense is good. If MSU really sucks, not just in people's minds, but in reality, then we should beat them. I would love to see us blow them out in East Lansing. The Spartan ego has to go.
I think my vote is swayed by hating Lou Holtz as an analyst. I just hate how he picks ND to run the table EVERY year, no matter what. I wish they would have made him eat crow on TV, but they hardly even mentioned his pick being ridiculous after Michigan won. The more ND loses, the better the odds of it being brought up to Lou on national TV, and that's what I want.
10) I'd love to "have a moment of silence" for Little Brother.
9) Dantonio is a douche.
8) I'd rather a win over a good ND team than a "good" MSU team. Does anyone REALLY think an MSU win over ND changes how people will view MSU?
7) Freep tears are delicious AND nutritious!
6) I'm tired of Sparty "acting all brand new..."
5) I can't stand Sparty fans.
4) Did I mention I can't stand Sparty fans?
3) I'd rather have Weis coaching ND than Brian Kelly.
2) It will make the ND win that much sweeter for Michigan fans.
1) It will make the UM loss that much more bitter for ND fans.
Seriously, if ND is having a hard time getting over what happened in Ann Arbor now? Imagine them running the table, or even losing a close game to USC....mmm-mm-MMM! Delicious Domer Tears!
Reason #3 - best argument I've heard. +1
despite being the kind of coach we can consistently win against, his bush league press conference tactics and player development are, IMHO, a stain on the great rivalry that is UM-ND.
What matters is if we lose to MSU, then our big ND win won't mean anything. We need to beat both of them. Who cares what happens between ND and MSU? Last year MSU had an opportunity to publicly support Michigan to beat OSU. Doing so would have propelled MSU into a better bowl game. MSU did not support a Michigan win. If either one loses Saturday, their fans will turn on their coach.
One way to have both coaches under fire on Sunday is for one team to win ugly -- fumbles, interceptions, penalties -- with very little scoring.
I just want Michigan to keep rolling. We are in a very desired position.
[Edit: I said earlier that this year MSU would fall to their previous ways of imploding. My prediction is an ND win.]
This reminds me of a line from a movie, can't remember the title:
"It's like watching my worst enemy drive over a cliff... in my new Mercedes."
Or something like that.
A Google search attributes the line first to Henny Youngman:
"It's like watching my mother-in-law drive off a cliff in my new Mercedes."
I wouldn't be surprised if it was used in a movie. It's good.
But I will smile when ND waxes MSU. The ND win is better because:
1) All of the Sparty self-doubt we've seen this week will quadruple, and they will implode and return to normal.
2) Our win doesn't become questionable.
3) Spartan tears are better tasting (also agree with Aequitas about the freep) and I can get plenty locally (coworkers and relatives, not friends).
4) Dantonio hates UM, while Weis only hates Big Ten officiating (too arrogant to hate UM).
5)The freep's inexplicable love for Sparty becomes even more obviously just hatred for UM.
I'm hoping for ND to win big.
Notre Dame because of the fact that they have 4 first round draft picks and an offense that will do this all year to teams so if they win and I hope they win all their games the rest of the year just to say that we beat one of the best offenses in the game
by alot. i hate hate hate dantonio.
I really just don't know on this one. I really hate Notre Dame, and somehow I think I hate Weis more. Normally I would go with State on this one but if Notre Dame wins this then it makes Michigan look that much better. That, and the idea of State going 1-4 to start the season makes me giddy like a school girl.
Like some here I really don't give a crap. If I have too I pick Notre Dame just so our win looks better.
I'd love to see MSU start off 1-2 going into Wisconsin, then against Michigan, then at Illinois.
They could plausibly start 1-5. I wonder how many would be calling for Dantonio's head from the Sparty "faithful"
ND. Mainly because it'll look better on our part, and put Sparty on his heels, sending MSU into another tough road game at Wisconsin before they have to come to Ann Arbor. Let them lose confidence... and get all flustered before coming to Ann Arbor. That and I dislike Sparty more than ND.
I think ND is going to win, anyhow.
Great arguments for rooting in favor of ND in regards to recruiting and keeping Charlie around.
However in a few weeks I really want to hear: "The 4-0 Michigan Wolverines travel to East Lansing for their first road game against the 1-3 (swappable with 2-2) Spartans."
There's something comforting about that.
I think it has something to do with the proper alignment of the universe. There's just something perverse and unnatural about Sparty running around pointing at themselves. For the good of humanity, they need to be persistently wallowing around .500, biting their nails over a Motor City Bowl bid.
It makes are win look bigger, and MSU has a history of falling apart after losses, so that will help us down the road when we travel to EL for our first away game.
