Are we gonna see new adidas threads this weekend?

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on

Since we're taking note of the oh-so-WTF tUOS unis that will be unveiled this weekend, I'm wondering if Michigan will unveil their TechFit Jerseys that adidas has been releasing to other programs.

- UCLA wore theirs during the Oregon game:

- Notre Dame busted 'em out last weekend against Army:

- Louisville had theirs during the West Virginia game (sorry, no pic)

- Tennessee wore theirs last week as well.

So are we the only program of the original bunch to not yet use 'em?

Wasn't there some issue earlier in the season with Adidas giving the team the new jerseys and the team voting not to wear them? Am I just making that up? I think it had something to do with them being too tight, but I could easily be full of shit.

I talked with a few of the guys and adidas was at practice a couple weeks ago having the players try them out. Many complained that they were too tight and were riding up under they pants, making them pretty uncomfortable and distracting. So don't expect to see them on Saturday or for the bowl game.

I was told that the players don't like them and prefer the old adidas jerseys, otherwise, we would have already been wearing them.

Edit:  Also, Notre Dame has been wearing them since it was on Uniwatch, they have them for their home and road jerseys, too.

Having seen what happened to poor Michael Floyd when Coach Kelly tried to introduce them for Notre Dame, I think Michigan might be a little wary of using them.

I understand the whole issues of wanting Nike back, but the reality is threefold, all of which bother me:

  1. Photos from The Game 2009 and The Game 2010 will look "wrong" because Ohio State isn't dressed like Ohio State.  Say what you will, but I am happy that even in defeat, Michigan is still wearing the Winged Helmet and something close to what they have worn for a century.
  2. It is clear that David Brandon is about the Michigan brand.  While that means he more than likely has as much respect for the Winged Helmet, the Maize and Blue jersey, the Yellow Pants, he also may be willing to listen to something when Nike says "Well, they're small tweaks.  A Maize jersey would go well with your Maize Out theme.  You could do it for your night game with Notre Dame."  I am NOT saying he would, but if the bottom line were there, it might be hard to ignore.
  3. Adidas has gotten somewhat smart about this.  The stars and stripes apparel and the breast cancer awareness apparel were both woven into the current context of the Michigan traditions.  I have this suspicion that adidas is going to become the preferred school of staunch traditionalist schools, like Michigan, Notre Dame, and yes, even Wisconsin.  (UCLA screwed up when they dropped the Clarendon numbers this year, but that is a whole other thread.)

The jersey worn by the Wistert brothers is the same essental jersey worn by Jake Long.  The jersey worn by Gerald Ford is the same essental jersey worn by David Molk.
The jersey worn by John Navarre is the same essental jersey worn by Denard Robinson.
The jersey worn by Ron Kramer was the same essental jersey worn by Rob Lytle.
The jersey worn by Anthony Carter was the same essental jersey worn by Braylon.
The jersey worn by Tom Harmon is the same essental jersey worn by Desmond Howard.

Michigan honors its past by wearing its past and knowing that no short term marketing gimmick is going to make more money than a steadfast devotion to the brand.

So if adidas is the company that is going to respect that, I think that's where we need to be.

We don't need to have throwback jerseys. Our jerseys thrown back look exactly the same.

UM >>> oh*o s***e

I think the jerseys that oh*o sh*t are wearing for The Game are pretty pathetic, but I guess the story behind them is alright. It's funny though, they need to wear "throwback" jerseys every year now or something, but U of M's jerseys have been almost the same for a century. If we wore throwbacks, they'd have to be knit sweaters from 1890. - my facebook status

He didn't come right out and say it was forced, but reading between the lines, it was clear that Tress and OSU didn't have a say in the matter-he had to fight to get permission for the O-line to wear their normal cleats instead of the Nike "throwback" cleats.

For what it's worth, a sizable minority, and possibly a majority, of OSU fans hate these uniforms, too.

The switch to Adidas was all about money (which I don't disagree with).  Are you saying that if Nike outbids Adidas that we should stick with Adidas?  Of course not.

Assuming $$$ is equal, I think most of us would prefer Nike (sans procombat, which I don't think we'd ever wear in a million years).

PSU is Nike and doesn't wear them..if this were up to the players whether Nike or Adidas, Nike would win in a landslide.

I believe most fans prefer the Nike gear to Adidas as well.

Adidas does one thing better..

i think the fan base is pretty firm in its stand to not change the uniform.  I personally dont like any of the adidas stuff because all you see are the 3 stripes.

the arms look like a 3 lane highway.

I'm a traditionalist, so with that in my, I really wish the Athletic Department would strike a deal with Ralph Lauren.  Having the Polo logo on the uniforms would be delightful and I can just imagine the sweet retro line of fan clothing that would be perfect for tailgating with my vintage, wood-panelled station wagon.

I guess the tech fits are cool, but winning is cooler. We can go back to our long sleeve shirts with the huge block M on the front from however many years ago for all I care. Either way, we'll still have the best in the game.
