Are players allowed to cheer/chant?
Went to the mbball game tonight and at one point in the 1st half the players on the bench for NC Central were doing the "defense....defense" chant. Strange right? Or maybe I'm just a non-observant turd and its a normal thing.

Yes. They are aloud to cheer llowedly.
December 15th, 2010 at 12:04 AM ^
no, they can only do it in their heads.

offensive, ignorant and stupid. sums it up.

I have no problem admitting that I'm ignorant and stupid which probably is the reason I'm asking this question but how is what I posted offensive? Is it the picture of the raptor or the question itself? Again, I did not post that with the intention of being offensive but rather funny (which I guess would go back to me being ignorant but come on, it's pondering raptor! clever girl).
Edit: HA! This guy says it's a good question and also attempts to answer it for those who are curious.
Second, that is actually a good question!
...
I believe it is a mixture of several methods of thinking. The strongest one would be how I feel myself talking inside my head. For example, I feel my mouth moving and forming words in my head. Second biggest one would be imagery. I see and feel myself signing inside my head. Last one would be, yes . . . a little voice in my head.
...
I have done some research and it appears that a large number of deaf people do indeed have a voice in their head even though they have no auditory input at all. Some others sign inside their head, but I have not found any information about people feeling their mouth move but I am positive I'm not the only one.

The picture is funny to most people, especially those who don't have any connection with Deaf people. It is offensive to some people, however. Deaf people go through a lot of shit, and there are actually a lot of problems with Deaf education and language to this day. But they still do have a language, ASL.
We should all just take the picture as it was intended, a harmless joke. We all know you didn't mean anything by it, except maybe one person.

Cracks me up when "mr. good guy " feels he has to come on here and stand up for, this or that group. Like there is a deaf guy reading this, thinking "that is just awful, i wish someone would say something". Your the guy who walks out of the stand up comedy act, because "this is just too offensive".I talked to the deaf, they don't mind.

Q: Why did the (Ohio) State grad leave his diploma on his dashboard?
A: So he could use handicapped parking.
Maybe a handicap person is offended that you are equating them with Buckeyes in your signature. Have you ever thought of that before you go ripping on pondering raptors?

Good catch. Pot meet kettle.

I love you. People of the internet: Stop being so dumb, then calling other people dumb
December 15th, 2010 at 10:16 AM ^
Good catch. Would that be defined as irony? Hopefully I haven't ignorantly offended Alanis Morissette with that question.

Dude you definitely need to take a chill pill...

The language they learn to sign in, duh

What language do dinosaurs think in?

More Philosauraptor!

Man, philosoraptor always makes me think too early in the morning.

The only thing strange about it is that we have a b-ball arena so quiet you could hear that. Players in all sports can & do cheer. Check out a softball game (good idea to do anyhow) to see how the players cheer in smaller-crowd situations.

To be fair, it's finals week and it was against NCCU
December 15th, 2010 at 12:05 AM ^
You ever been to a softball game? Or a swim meet?
December 15th, 2010 at 12:06 AM ^
yes...and yes. Don't you think there's a bit of a difference between those and basketball?
December 15th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
I think a team doing chants at a basketball game is much different than a softball game. I have played organized basketball all my life, and have never heard a team doing chants on the bench (not even in elementary school). I find it odd that an opposing college team was doing the defense chant from their bench. It's one thing to yell and get hyped up from the bench, but doing chants like a cheerleading squad is a little weird to me.

the hell

The OP is saying that UNCC was doing the Defense... Defense chant like cheerleaders do during a basketball game. Have the two of you ever been to one of those? I have never heard a team do chants from the bench. It's one thing to yell and root for your team from the bench, but group chants like a cheerleading squad is much different. Could you see Duke coming into Michigan and coach Wojo or Dawkins getting the defense chant going? No, you couldn't, which is the point I am making, and what I think the OP is suggesting as well.

A douche. That's what.

players can cheer allowed
December 15th, 2010 at 12:07 AM ^
good word....

I'd humbly urge the board to have restraint here. Too easy (and, therefore, hard to be funny in response).
December 15th, 2010 at 12:16 AM ^
Softball/Little League style? "We want a pitcher, not a belly itcher" kind of thing?
I have seen it a few times at the college level in Men's basketball, but I wouldn't say it's the norm.
December 15th, 2010 at 12:30 AM ^
If players want to encourage their teammates by cheering for them, that's on them. It seems like some people are sort of turning up their noses but if I was on the court I'd want my teammates showing that kind of support for me.
December 15th, 2010 at 1:26 AM ^
Cheering is generally encouraged.
December 15th, 2010 at 1:37 AM ^
in football even. many teams make their players on the sideline yell... "PASS" .... "BALL" , etc. on every play when the team is on defense.
December 15th, 2010 at 2:20 AM ^
That's alot different than doing chants from the bench in a basketball. In football, players do this to help their teammates by telling them what the play is. Something comparable to this in basketball would be calling out screens or saying a shot is short or long. Doing chants like cheerleaders from the bench is pretty rare, and I'm not sure why everyone on this post is acting like it's not.
December 15th, 2010 at 3:08 AM ^
we would do human pyramids on the bench to help support the players who were in the game so they could perform their best and know we supported them.
December 15th, 2010 at 7:57 AM ^
Wouldn't it be more comfortable on a mat?
December 15th, 2010 at 5:44 AM ^
We would yell random numbers at the other team.
December 15th, 2010 at 7:45 AM ^
Would a debate team argue amongst themselves?
December 15th, 2010 at 8:53 AM ^
I was at the game and noticed during the first half that a player on their bench was calling "BALL" "BALL" while our offense was at their side of the court. He didn't manage to fool any of our players, but I did think that was extremely busch league. Anyone else saw that?
